Abstract
This research on cultural transmission of belief in Phi-Phu-Ta (ancestry ghosts) in Ban Don Bom
Community, Mueang Kao Sub-distrcit, Mueang District, Khon Kaen Province, has applied qualitative
research methodology by conducting in-depth interviews with key informants. The findings are as follows:
Phi-Phu-Ta have been regarded as gods who protect the community, and Don-Phu-Ta (hill of ancestry
ghosts) has been regarded as the home ground of wild animals, ghosts, and superior beings, symbolizing
interdependence between humans and the forest, conveyed in a form of rites and beliefs passed on from
generation to generation. The belief in Phi-Phu-Ta has been accounted as a practice of living a life; the
community members worship and make wishes to them, and if granted, a ritual to show gratitude to the
gods would be carried out. Don-Phu-Ta is also a name for any places the spirits of the ancestors reside,
and wherever is a Don-Phu-Ta, that place would be green, that is, as to any forest with myths or black
magic, it would be regarded as sacred and communally respected by villagers and persists to be verdant
in perpetuity. The hill also makes the people feel proud of their locality as a place where holy spirits live
in, and bonds them together by instilling them with morals to co-exist with other people peacefully and
strengthen their families and community. This belief in ancestry ghosts also implants the villagers with
both the fear of karma and heartsease, which mentally affect how they live their lives and influence
them to live together in harmony. Besides, it is also a representation of gratitude towards ancestors
merits, so local rites have become a part of the development of the community, binding peoples
conscious to the nature. These rites are normally performed in the community, and so the cultural
transmission from generation to generation has undoubtedly been unbroken and established a system of
local cultures that bestow the people with the sense of participation in the community through various
activities.
