Gaming increases ones motor skills and have a positive influence on ones lifestyle

Introduction and Background

Games have been with us since our childhood. Whether it was board games like Monopoly or
early consoles like Sega Mega Drive II which provided some great games like Sonic the
Hedgehog or on modern times where there are Playstation3, Xbox 360, computers and the like.
In general, everyone has played games at least once in his or her life time.
The definition of games is that it is a form of entertainment where an individual plays video
games, which provides fun, social community with others from multiplayer gaming, etc.
Games were a boys thing since its birth and somewhat still are. The gaming industry is filled
with male players, designers, testers, creators, etc. But until recently, females are also getting
interested on gaming and getting into the things boys did in the past. The game production
houses like EA, Epic Games, Bethesta Game Studios, Nintendo etc. are paying lots and lots of
money to their employees, testers, sponsors, etc. just to bring out great games, so that we all can
enjoy and have memorable moments when playing them.
After all the hype, now gaming industry recommends every game to have multiplayer
capabilities. Multiplayer games offer different dimensions of playing ones favorite game. There
are lots of challenges, competitions, ladders, leaderboards, etc. Another interesting part of
multiplayer gaming is that one can make new friends and join online communities or clans, and
challenge other clans to determine who the best are.
Because multiplayer games became very popular among the youth and the aged alike, a
competition was created, to tailor the needs of gamers in a broader and lavish sense. World

Cyber Games or well known as WCG, is an annual competition when they offer specific games
for example, Warcraft 3, Counter Strike, FIFA, and NFS (more games are added if required).
Players from all across the globe comes here to compete in this honorary tournament, to gain
fame and glory, and to get the price of getting a tag of becoming the best of the best for that
particular year from one of the respective games.
The condition of gamers in Bangladesh is not that good than most other countries. Our
country has many enthusiasts and professionals alike, who play games of several categories.
Professionals also compete in local competitions hosted by a gaming caf, and also join WCG.
But the fact of piracy, which has consumed the gaming market for more than a decade, is that
they provide great games in cheap prices but also on the same time removes the multiplayer
capabilities that the games provide. The hackers buy a single copy of the original game for about
$ 60, and then cracks the game serial number and mass produces, distributes to poor countries
like us so sell the games as low as Tk. 40. This is why; Bangladeshi gamers cannot get a chance
when they move in to the big stage like WCG. The players that compete with our players are
hundred times better than us, and beat us easily.
In Bangladesh, games are considered a waste of time and money which are spent on
expensive gaming machines like Xbox 360, Playstation3, and computers with mammoth
requirements. A person starts gaming with intent when they are young, but when they gradually
grow up, their parents force them to stop gaming and focus on studies. In this process, the ones
who had talents are lost and moves into a more normal life like the rest of us are having right
now.

The perceptions needs to be changed, and some parents in this modern era should check out
whether their children are actually good at gaming or not. As I believe, gaming has a future, and
much money can be generated from gaming competitions, or getting into game studios.
The gaming infrastructure has to be better in Bangladesh in order for us to compete better in
the major competitions like WCG. There should be a group among the communities on how to
improve their gaming environment. Bring out more gaming cafs in order to hold and create
more gamers, and also provide cheaper hourly packages so that players can play for longer
periods, and gain competitive advantage for the long run.
A motor skill is a trait that helps an individual to adapt or learn a particular thing much faster
than the one with lower motor skill. It also increases ones reaction time, to perform faster, and
smoother. According to Wikipedia, it says that the development of motor skills occurs in the
motor cortex, the region of the cerebral cortex that controls voluntary muscular groups, (Motor
skills, 2011). More technical aspects are; when, an individual plays especially violent first
person shooter games, they are likely to get excited. This excitement will pump in more blood
throughout the nervous system, allowing that individual to think faster and react better to dodge
bullets, or punches, etc. Hence, the individual will more likely to enhance his or her motor skills.
Good amounts of motor skills are good for an individual as he or she can benefit of gaining faster
reaction times. But too much will make a person a bit over the edge, for example they will expect
something is going to occur at any moment of time and might jump if someone even touches
them.
According to Devin Henry (2007) While most "Halo 3" gamers are focused on "finishing
the fight," studies conducted by University psychologists have shown that playing video games

Gaming increases ones motor skills and have a positive influence on ones lifestyle

can also improve a player's motor skills, (para. 1). The study was conducted by University of
Minnesotas scientists, on examining some test subjects, and then they were given some test
which involves using their motor skills, and the result was evident that violent games actually do
increase an individuals reaction times.
The benefits of playing games are that it improves our motor skills overall one way or
another. It increases our reaction time, our time to learn a particular thing decreases, and our
hand and eye coordination becomes much faster as because in games like Unreal Tournament
2004, the death matches are fast, to win a match, this is very much required. Another benefit of
playing games are those who own Xbox 360 Kinect, Nintendo Wii, and Playstation3 Move
controllers can do a lot of exercises or movements of various sorts. This will keep them healthy
as well as out of laziness and boredom. Gaming can increase ones focus also, and hence do
better work. As dangers can lurk from any side any time in a first person shooter game, the
gamers get more concentrated, so that they do not die in the middle of a battlefield.
Hence, from above all the secondary materials I have found, they all show that, gaming
actually increases ones motor skills.

Research Questions
In my plan to examine the effects of playing games, I am going research on average gamers. My
research will point out the following research questions:

What is a motor skill?

Why do we need to improve our motor skills in general?

What are the advantages of improving ones motor skills?

What are the results of a gamer, before and after completing a particular game?

Why people of Bangladesh need to play games in the modern age?

How the gamers give time on gaming, and other daily works?

How does an individual gamer think, compared to an average person?

What are the reaction times of an individual gamer, compared to an average person?

Is gaming affecting their lifestyle or not?

How their parents perceive of gaming lifestyle?

Gaming increases ones motor skills and have a positive influence on ones lifestyle

Hypothesis
When improving ones motor skills, his or her reaction times get faster. They think better, work
better, and even anticipate better. From my research, I expect to find gamers senses to be faster
than an average person. Even though they sit most of the time and play games, but this makes
them more energetic and removing stress, hence doing a particular job outside efficiently and
effectively. I will even find out that what gamers do on a big stage, for example gaming
competitions and how do they fair. My research will also include a short study on the reactions
from their parents, how they perceive their children gaming more often. I also expect to find that
gamers have increased greatly in Bangladesh, since most of the playing fields have been filled
with apartments and/or shops and stores.

Methodology
For my primary research, I will conduct my research by taking most private university
students of Dhaka as a sample. I will also try to take samples from the gaming cafes around
Dhaka city, to make my research paper strong. From that, I will design an effective questionnaire
which will cover most of my research questions and range so that my research turns out strong in
the end.
For my secondary research, I plan to use various resources from the Internet, and use
search engines like Google, Ask, etc. Use Wikipedia to find detailed answers. And consult to
gaming sites like Gamespot and IGN to find articles on players improving motor skills while
gaming. I am not sure if I am to find book resources or not.

From the first graph we can see that, most players which are 35% of all twenty
respondents I have surveyed on play games only for two hours a day. The respondents who
answered two hours were mostly North South University students. This means that, the students
do not get enough time for playing games, as there are pressures from a lot of faculties from
different courses, giving them assignments, group projects, case studies etc. At the same time,
the faculties give them mid-term exams, and quizzes also not to mention final term examinations.
With all these pressures they are having, it is obvious that they do not have time to play games.
Another thing for playing less can be that they are outgoing and stay home very less. They do is
hangout with their friends, and roam around all day, hence less or no time for games.
After I did a survey from a gaming caf in Dhanmondi, called Metal Gear, the
respondents there gave some positive reviews in the favor of games. 25% of the respondents play
games for eight hours a day. When asked why so much, most of them responded that they

practice a lot, so that they can tackle the other competitors in the local competitions, which
actually a great thing.
The oddities in this graph are that, respondents play less and four hours are equal.
Although the survey was short, so I am getting in to any forms of fallacy.

In this question, all twenty respondents had the liberty to choose more than one answer.
The general trend of Bangladesh is that, they all loves to play sports category, which includes
FIFA, NFS, Pro Evolution Soccer, etc. Sports category games are lot of fun and bring in
excitement on a particular gamer. It is one of the easiest form or rather basic forms in the gaming
industry. All players have to do is to score a goal, or win a race. But professional gamers play
this game as because NFS and FIFA are prime games of WCG. On my survey on gaming caf,
all the gamers ticked sports as one of their favorite category.

11

The first person shooter players are 55% according to my survey. This is because I think
that most gamers in Bangladesh are not comfortable with fast reflex fast reacting games. Though
there are a lot of players who plays Counter Strike, my survey yielded somewhat mediocre
amounts.
The main oddity of this graph is that, there are very less players from role playing games
(RPG) category. This is because RPG games require tactics, and to win a particular battle against
the enemies, blends of different items are very essential. This can be tedious sometimes and
hence the favorability decreases.
The rest of the results are nominal, as they tend to decrease. An important fact to be noted
that the gaming industry has recently focusing on the arcade category, that is bringing back old
school styled games to the new generation. Games like Angry Birds, are getting popular among
the youth and aged alike, and have favorable reviews as well. So if this survey was done some
five to six months later, may be arcade games result would have been higher.

From this survey, it is evident that Bangladeshi gamers simply do not give competitions
an importance. This is why they fail to compete on the international stages like on WCG. They
have more important work to do, or it might be that mood is an important factor. If they feel that
exams are near or occurring, then they will not join in, and if they are free, then they might join.
It is obvious that most people have never taken part, as they do not play games much.
They will fell that paying Tk. 300 will be a pure waste.
Respondents answering that they join competitions whenever they hear about one is no
surprise at all. But some of the gamers also answered that mood is big factor.
The main oddity here is that only one respondent did not know that gaming competitions
even exist which is a shame.

The purpose of doing this survey was to see if there are actually playing fields in the
community, and they play physical games instead of playing video games. 50% of the
respondents claim that they have a playing field(s) in their community. This can be either of two
things, the most of the respondents live on the same area or they actually have a playing field.
There can be a thing that maybe most of the respondents actually play on the fields, not on their
community, but on others community. Either way, I think the respondents were somewhat loose
ended on this question. This is why I consider this plot as an oddity.
The answer from other three seems expected results. As we mostly know that all the
available lands are getting filled up every day, it is possible that the empty lands which were
once playing field are getting filled up for apartments or shops.

From the graph, the general trend is that 55% of the respondents friends play games, and
they feel it is their life. Though I believe that the survey is rather a hasty generalization, but still
it counts on some factors. One of the factors is that the players from the gaming caf all circled
the first option. The reason here is that, they have made a community or group amongst
themselves. Hence it is obvious that their friends play games, and feels that it is their life.
Students from NSU also ticked first option. This can be that their friends have less pressure on
studies; hence they can play for longer periods.
All the respondents from NSU have answered either their friends cannot play because of
lack of resources, that is they do not have consoles or even a gaming computer, or plays
sometimes, but not like the respondent option. Now interesting fact here is that the respondent,
who plays two hours a day, circled the last option. This can hence that their friends do not play
games at all.

15

Finally, none of the respondent has circled about their friends thinking gaming is waste of
time. After all, we are defending games somehow on this research; hence it is a good result.

From the above graph, it is clear that this survey have mixed reactions from parents of
each respondent. But overall it is clear that our parents still takes games as a negative view, and
only some of them (60%) are saying that gaming is good, as it is keeping their children active,
instead of lazy or idle.
35% of the parents still think that gaming too much actually deteriorates ones eyesight,
and they should stop or make some limitations on their children so that they play fewer games.
But recent studies have shown that, gaming actually improves ones eyesight, because one has to
give focus on where an enemy will pop up, from which corner. That is why; it improves
concentration as well as better vision, hence improving eyesight.
Another 35% of the parents think that gaming is a waste of time, and their children are
not focusing on their studies, and eventually ending up with bad results. To be honest this is true,

Gaming increases ones motor skills and have a positive influence on ones lifestyle

16

and this happens only when an individual plays excessively. If he or she controls the level of
gaming in a day, then as mentioned earlier, gaming improves ones focus, this will make the
individual to study better and can memorize faster, and that will give them better results.
The oddity here is that no parents here thinks that gaming will stop their children to be
bad, like they will take weed and or drugs. This is a perception the respondents think that their
parent will not ever think in general.

Here what I have done is that I have taken a random situation from real life, and gave it
as a question in the questionnaire, so that I can see what are the effect of motor skills that are
working on the respondent.
Most of the respondents seems care their cars, and hence drive slowly and follow the line,
in tight jams. But more motor skilled drivers like me use the car to move into small pockets of
space, and move ahead from the rest. The purpose of my survey here was fulfilled after I saw
the second option was moderately circled.

The oddity here is that, two of the respondents actually gave the option that they got fed

90% of the respondents claim that they have finished the questionnaire within 3-5
minutes. And two of them have completed in 6-9 minutes. I will not say that all of the above in
the range 3-5 minutes have actually completed in that amount of time, but it is somewhere close
between option A and B.

Summary of Research Findings

From the data presentation and analysis part, I can conclude that the gamer in Bangladesh
has more or less have actually gained motor skills from playing games. This is because some of
them play games as if this is their life; this case is mostly true for the respondents who play in a
gaming caf. The students from North South University are actually more of a realistic people
rather than cyber. They go outdoors more often than they play games at home. That is why I
have more people answering that they play for two hours a day.
I have also gathered information is that gamers in Bangladesh are not focusing on going
on to gaming competitions like WCG, this is because we they mostly have studies to do, and
make their parents proud, who thinks that studies are better than gaming, and they can provide a
future. Hence, this is not in sync with my hypothesis, and concludes that it does not improve an
individuals lifestyle much.
Though from my research I did found more gamers emerging from the young generation,
still I think that they will not continue in the long run. The factors can be that their parents and
even their friends will influence the away from games and hence diminishing any chance of
having a gaming celebrity.
I will suggest all the parents, that sometimes small things can make one big. And gaming
is that small thing that has a big potential, but it is overlooked because it is perceived as a
harmful thing, which needs to be changed among this generation of individuals, and build an
infrastructure so that Bangladesh have a bright gaming future.

Gaming increases ones motor skills and have a positive influence on ones lifestyle

19

Conclusion
The gaming situation in Bangladesh is actually poorer than I expected. Basically the
gamers starts their gaming career at an early age, but pressurization from parents and friends
alike, deviate them from this career. If their parents and friends were more supportive, then the
gaming picture would have been something else. Many players would have turned up to go and
play in WCG, and who knows, we might have a winner. About the gaming increases motor skills
part, the research went absolutely according to the hypothesis. There are many articles and news
out there that shows that gaming actually increases motor skills and concentration, and also the
ability to learn faster than the others. I will point out that the gaming environment must be made
for the future generations to come so that we can see them competing in the biggest of all stages
and make Bangladesh proud.
