Introduction:
Welcome to Ed Austin's World Touring Bicycles Guide.
There's an ever increasing number of advertisements, websites, blogs and Facebook groups, devoted
to cycle touring. This suggests that many people are out there touring on bicycles, and many others
are thinking of doing so. Could you be one of them?
If you're considering such intrepid adventure, you'll need a bicycle. Of course you could venture out
on granny's trusty shopping bike, or anything else that has wheels and a seat, but long-distance
unsupported touring is best done on a bicycle that's specifically designed for the purpose, and fitted
with panniers to carry heavy loads over rugged terrain. These special bicycles are World Touring
Bicycles (WTB's for short).
WTB's are rarely seen in towns. They are seldom promoted or displayed in bicycle shops, and unlike
many other types of bicycles, they are not produced in great numbers.
Obtaining online comparative information about the many brands and models of WTB's that are
available, is seldom quick and easy. They tend to be submerged in a wide-range of other bicycles,
and are found under various headings like Adventure, Trekking, Travel, Touring and Expedition.

In this one document you can peruse at your leisure, the important technical details of more than a
hundred of the finest retailed and configured solo model WTB's produced.
The Guide applies to solo WTB's, equiped with frames and rigid forks made from aluminium or
chrome-molybdenum steel.
As well as technical specifications and gearing tables for each WTB model, the Guide includes
narratives to introduce the concept of bicycle touring to you, with advice about bicycle components,
materials, maintenance, gearing, road safety, etc.

Touring on a bicycle.
Touring on a bicycle is a delightful way of travelling and seeing the world. You can stop or start
whenever and wherever you want. Your senses are always in-touch with your surroundings. You
meet other people and cultures. You find mental and physical stimulation to help you become a
more interesting, knowledgeable and healthier person, regardless of age, or gender.
Pedalling along with your belongings loaded on a bicycle, is a wonderful, liberating and enjoyable
experience, as you discover what is around the corner and over the hill, accumulating memories and
friendships that may last a lifetime. Yes, it is possible to change your very outlook and lifestyle, just
by riding down the road on a bicycle.
Afraid to cycle? Many people are, though statistically, cycling is no more dangerous than walking, or
cooking dinner. You could start by cycling in quiet areas. With patience and perseverance, you will
soon develop confidence and all-important road riding skills.
Too old to cycle? Don't you believe it! Some of the most ardent and capable members of cycling
clubs, are well over 60 years old. Cycling helps keep you alert, fit and healthy in old age.
Sore back, knees, hips? Try cycling! Cycling often does not aggravate conditions that limit other
forms of activity, such as walking and running.
You don't have to circle the globe on your first trip. There are plenty of options for getting started,
from just going around the block, cruising in a nearby park, riding with friends, or joining a touring
club, to help build up fitness and experience on a regular basis.
Cycle touring can be defined as any extended journey on a bicycle. The journey may range from a
day or two, around a neighbourhood, or crossing continents, taking several months or years.
Tours may be supported or unsupported, or a combination of both.
Supported cycle touring is usually done by clubs and large groups, often using vehicles to carry food,
luggage, and tired cyclists. Accommodation and meals may be pre-arranged, so riders may have to
be at a certain place at a certain time. Virtually any kind of bicycle can be used for this type of
touring, providing it is comfortable, and has suitable gearing.
Unsupported long distance cycle touring is more often done by individuals, couples, or small groups.
Everything that's needed for the journey must be carried on the bicycle, or in a towed trailer. Food
and accommodation may be carried, or found along the way. This type of touring is best done on a
dedicated World Touring Bicycle (WTB).

World Touring Bicycles are special:
World Touring Bicycles (WTB's) are neither mountain bikes, nor conventional road bikes, though
they incorporate some features of both. What makes WTB's unique, is the frame dimensions and
angles necessary to make a stable base for carrying heavy loads, and provide attachments and
clearances for fitment of panniers, mudguards and extra-wide tyres.
WTB's are likely to be ridden in isolated areas of the world where there are no support services, so
great attention is given to reliability and durability of component parts.
Dedicated WTB's incorporate many of the following features, fittings and components.
A comfortable saddle It's no fun without one.
Front and rear pannier frame attachment points It's not a WTB without them.
Front and rear mudguard attachment points Ready for when you need mudguards.
Pump holder fittings For stowing the essential tyre pump.
Water bottle cage holders At least two.
Stainless steel nuts, bolts and spokes.
Extra-long chainstays Provide clearance between rider's heel and rear panniers.
At least thirty-two 14 gauge (2.0 mm) spokes per wheel.
Wheel rim eyelets Protect wheel rim spoke holes.
Sealed wheel hub bearings Keeps water and dirt out, and lubricating grease in.
Low gear ratios For climbing up and over steep hills.
A wide range of usable gears To help maintain a constant pedalling cadence.
Good brakes For stopping or slowing down, particularly when it's urgent.
Rear derailleur guard Protects derailleur from damage and misalignment.
Chainring guard Protects legs and trousers from damage and grease marks.
Rear wheel spoke guard A disc that prevents the chain from contacting spokes.
Puncture-proof tyres There's no such thing, but some are better than others.
Side or central stand Keeps the bicycle upright when stationary.
Steering limiter Prevents the front wheel from swinging fully around, when stationary.
Frame couplers Allow bicycle frames to be dismantled for air transportation.
Good side clearance at forks and chainstays For fitting mudguards and extra-wide tyres.
A bell to provide warning of your approach. A legal requirement in some countries.
A rear-view mirror It's vitally important to be aware of whats behind you.
Lighting and reflectors Essential in darkness and conditions of poor visibility.
A suspension seat-post Helps absorb road shocks and vibration.

Frames forks and handlebars:
Frame parts:
Bottom bracket
Short horizontal tube, housing the pedal crank shaft and bearings.
Head tube
Short vertical tube, housing the front fork tube, and its bearings.
Seat tube
Long tube that houses the seat post, and connects to the bottom bracket,.
Seat post
Short tube, clamped in the seat tube to adjust the seat height.
Top tube
Long tube connects the head tube to the seat tube.
Down tube
Long tube connects the head tube to the bottom bracket.
Seatstays
Thin tubes connecting the seat tube to the rear wheel dropouts.
Chainstays
Thin tubes connecting the bottom bracket to the rear wheel dropouts.
Dropouts
At the end of the chainstays, where the rear wheel is attached.
Frame and fork materials.

WTB's are built to be strong and sturdy, with an important balance between flexibility for comfort,
and rigidity for stability. Most WTB frames and forks are made from aluminium or steel alloys.
Aluminium:
Aluminium is lighter than steel, but requires greater mass to be as strong. and to be rigid.
Rigidity is necessary, as excessive flexing can cause aluminium to work-harden and crack.
Frame and fork rigidity is compensated on mountain bikes (MTB's) by suspension systems, and
balloon tyres. On WTB's, it may be compensated by low-pressure tyres, suspension seatposts,
padded handlebars, and sprung saddles.
When screwed directly into aluminium, steel bolts can cause thread damage and corrosion.
Aluminium can be welded, but repaired areas may be weakened, and likely to fail again.
Steel:
The majority of WTB frames and forks are made from 4130 CrMo (chrome-molybdenum alloy) steel
seamed tubes. CrMo steel is naturally tough and springy. It is joined by brazing or welding.
Traditional style WTB's use small diameter thin-walled steel frame tubes, and curved steel forks,
that provide a degree of rider comfort and endurance, by absorbing shocks and vibrations.
Large diameter, thick-walled steel frame tubes, and straight forks, tend to negate the shockabsorbing benefits of steel.
For increased lightness and strength, 4130 CrMo tubes may be cold-worked and butted to form
Reynolds 520 or 525 tubes, or heat-treated and butted to form Reynolds 725 and 853 tubes. These
special tubes may not be easily repaired, and being thin-walled, are more prone to damage.
Other materials:
Carbon-fibre, stainless steel and titanium are excellent materials for many bicycle applications, but
cost, damage and repairability issues, generally preclude their use on WTB's.

Frame Sizes.
Frames are not adjustable. So, for your comfort and safety, it is paramount that you select a frame
size that is compatible with your personal dimensions, flexibility, and riding posture.
Frame size is usually based on the seat tube centreline, measured from the centre of the bottom
bracket to where a real or imaginary horizontal top tube joins (or would join) the seat tube.
Some bicycle brands use shirt-size terms such as Small, Medium and Large. It's a crude way of
sizing frames, but one of them may fit you perfectly.
The following table will give you an idea what size frame suits your height. Handlebar and saddle
positions may need adjusting to match your arm and leg lengths. See Adjusting for Comfort: on
Page 16. Most bicycle shops will help you choose the right sized frame.
You should be able to straddle your bicycle with bare feet flat on the ground, and your feet should
not contact the front wheel or mudguards (if fitted), whilst doing a slow turn.

Most WTB models have a diamond shaped mens style frame, with a horizontal or sloping toptube. Models are available with womens or mixte style frames, with either straight or curved
down-tubes. However, these models may not be as sturdy, or as rigid, as those with standard
diamond frames.
Handlebars.
WTB's may be fitted with a variety of handlebar shapes, which will dictate the type of gear and brake
controls that are fitted to them.
Drop handlebars are usually fitted with STI combined brake and gear control levers, or with bar-end
gear control levers, and independent brake levers.
Straight, riser and butterfly style handlebars tend to have combined or independent brake and gear
levers, or twistgrip gear controls, and independent brake levers.
Wide bars give better control on loose surfaces, and let you sit more upright to enjoy the scenery.
Handlebars should be adjusted to positions that best suit the rider, and provide good access to brake
and gear controls. Large adjustments may require the handlebar stem to be changed.

Brake systems.
Brakes.
Rim or disc brakes? Rim brake pads grip the wheel rims. Disc brake pads grip a disc mounted on
wheel hubs. They may be either cable or hydraulically operated by levers on the handlebars.
WTB rim brakes come mainly in three different types, with their own method of cable release.
Dual pivot V-brake The cable pulls on one side through a curved tube.
Dual pivot cantilever The cable pulls from above through a splitter.
Single pivot calliper Racing bike style.
Hydraulic disc brakes can impose high stresses on forks and wheel spokes, and may not be
progressive in their action. They tend to add to complexity, spare part, and rectification issues.
Discs can be easily damaged, and extra care must be taken when fitting them into the brake calliper.
Soft brake pads may give excellent retardation, but wear out quickly. Hard pads last longer, but may
cause damage and rapid wear to discs or wheel rims.
Drive systems.
Drive.
Drive, from the pedals to the back wheel, is provided by a chain or belt, connecting chainrings at the
front, with sprockets at the rear.
Most multi-gear derailleur operated systems use rivetted chains of 3/32nd inch internal width.
Chains may be joined with a split link, so they may be fitted or removed without using a special tool.
However, a special tool is required to fit, remove, adjust or repair fully rivetted chains.
Despite some small dimensional variations between brands, most 5, 6, 7 and 8-speed chains are
interchangeable, and most 9 and 10-speed chains are interchangeable.
Hub gear and gearbox systems mostly use single chainrings and sprockets, connected by a one-piece
notched belt, or a 1/8th inch internal width chain. The belt or chain stays in a straight line, under
almost constant tension, so it lasts much longer than chains on derailleur systems.
Notched belt drives require special notched chainrings and sprockets, plus a joint in the frame
chainstays, so that the one-piece belt can be replaced.
Gear systems.
Gears.
Gearing is provided by various means Gears built into the bottom bracket, such as the Pinion P1.18 system.
Gears built into the rear wheel hub, such as the Shimano Alfine and Rohloff systems.
Shifting a chain across multiple chainrings and sprockets, as in standard derailleur systems.
A combination of hub and derailleur systems, as in the SRAM DualDrive system.
Full front and rear derailleurs have separate control levers or twistgrips. Other systems have a single
control.
Derailleurs are fully exposed, require lubrication, and are prone to damage and contamination.
Internal gear systems are continually lubricated and shielded from damage and contamination.
8.

Gearing Terminology:
Gear ratio.
The gear ratio reflects the number of rotations of the rear wheel, provided by one rotation of the
pedal cranks.
The figure is obtained by dividing the number of chainring teeth, by the number of sprocket teeth.
A 52-tooth chainring, combined with a 13-tooth sprocket, gives a gear-ratio of 4.00, or 4 to 1, which
is a high gear.
A 30-tooth chainring, combined with a 30-tooth sprocket, gives a gear-ratio of 1.00, or 1 to 1, which
is a low gear.
Gear-inches.
Gear-inches is similar to gear ratio, but takes wheel size into account.
It is the distance a bicycle travels for one rotation of the pedal cranks, so it reflects the overall gear.
It is obtained by multiplying the gear ratio (see above) by the tyre outer diameter, in inches.
The metric equivalent of gear-inches is metres of development which is found by multiplying the
gear ratio by the tyre outer circumference, in metres.
With the same gear ratio, a bicycle with large wheels will have a higher gear-inches figure, and travel
further for each rotation of the pedal crank, than a bicycle with small wheels.
A gear ratio of 4.00, combined with a 26 inch diameter tyre, gives 104 gear-inches.
A gear ratio of 4.00, combined with a 29 inch diameter tyre, gives 116 gear-inches.

Retail WTB's section.
Gear range.
Gear range is the relationship, in percentage terms, between the highest gear ratio and lowest gear
ratio. Or between the largest and smallest gear-inch figures.
If the highest gear ratio is 4.0, and the lowest is 0.7, then the gear range is 5.71, or 571%.
If the largest gear-inches is 120, and the smallest gear-inches is 24, then the gear range is 500%.
Though a large gear range may seem desirable, in practice it may create large gaps between gears,
and extremely low or high gears that are unnecessary, or rarely used.
Derailleur capacity.
One of the rear derailleur functions, is to keep the chain in tension during its full range of operation.
Its ability to do this is a known as its capacity.
The amount of capacity required is determined by adding the variation between the largest and
smallest chainrings, to the variation between the largest and smallest sprocket.
A 26-36-48 tooth chainring set, (Variation 22 teeth), combined with an 11-32 tooth sprocket cassette
(Variation 21 teeth), produces a total variation of 43 teeth, so the rear derailleur must have a
capacity of at least 43. Derailleurs with long cages have the greatest capacity.
Most WTB's have a long-cage rear derailleur, with a capacity of 45.
9.

Gearing:
WTB's require a wide range of gears to cope with heavy loads, rugged terrain and head-winds. But
are they all usable, or necessary? Let's consider the following gear-inch table for a typical WTB 27speed derailleur set-up of 26-36-48 toothed chainrings, and a 11-32 tooth cassette.

To avoid excessive wear and tear on the chain and derailleur mechanisms, it is common practice to
not use the extreme outer combinations of gears,. So figures 30, 41 and 46 on the left side, and 59,
64 and 88 on the right side, have been crossed out.
The six pairs of figures (in coloured squares) are either the same or similar, making half of them
redundant, so figures 33, 39, and 44 in the top row, and figures 54, 62 and 81 in the bottom row,
have also been crossed out. It becomes apparent, that we would normally use the thirteen gears
joined by the red line, and the other fourteen ratios are largely redundant.
Rather than the total number of gears, what really matters is 1. A range of well-spaced usable gears To maintain a reasonably constant cadence (pedal
speed) over varying terrain. A 24-speed system may be preferable to a 30-speed system.
2. The lowest gear (figure 22 in the table) To enable us to ride over the steepest hills on our
journey.
3. The cruising gear This undefined, but important gear is whatever gear we happen to be in,
when cruising along, with little effort. It occurs around 70 gear-inches, depending on
changeable factors, such as load, wind, inclines, and road surfaces. It's better if it is near the
top end of the middle chainring gear range, (like figure 69 in the table above), to provide
maximum use of that chainring.
Comparing Gearing Systems.
In comparison with the derailleur system above, here are typical gear-inch tables for three internal
geared systems. Note, there are no redundant, duplicated or unusable gears.

Wheel and tyre sizing.
Traditionally, we use estimations of tyre outer diameter measurements in inches, to determine
wheel and tyre size compatibility. It's a crude system, but it usually works.
Standard MTB 26 inch tyres fit wheels are compatible with a wheel bead-seat diameter of 559 mm.
Several other nominated 26 inch tyres, (including 650A, 650B and 650C) have different wheel
bead-seat diameters, so they are not interchangeable.
Modern 28 inch, 29 inch, and 700C tyres have the same wheel bead-seat diameter of 622 mm.
Some archaic 28 inch and 700B tyres have a wheel bead-seat diameter of 635 mm.
The modern, and more accurate method of sizing bicycle wheels and tyres, is the metric ISO 5775
ETRTO (European Tyre and Rim Technical Organisation) system, which matches the tyre bead
diameter to the wheel bead-seat diameter, so compatibility is ensured.
Tyre sizes may be marked in several different ways. The following table shows typical examples.

Tyre and wheel rim width sizing.

WTB tyre widths generally range from 32 to 50 mm (1.25 to 1.95 inches).
Tyre width is the tyre sidewall side-to-side external measurement.
Wheel rim width is the rim side-to-side internal measurement at the tyre bead-seat position.
Narrow tyres are best fitted on narrow rims. Broad tyres are best fitted on broad rims.
The following table indicates optimum combinations of tyre and rim widths.

Choice of wheel-tyre size.
Wheel assemblies on WTB's must be durable and strong enough to withstand bearing heavy loads
over rough terrain. They must remain serviceable in areas where there are few if any support
services.
WTB's are usually fitted with 559mm or 622mm wheels, with matching sized tyres, that generally
range in width from 32 to 50mm.
Comparisons and considerations .
Wide tyres tend to operate at lower pressures than narrow tyres, so they should be better at
absorbing road shocks. They may also have thicker carcasses that are less likely to puncture.
Narrow tyres have smaller air volumes, so they are quicker to inflate
Small wheels (with shorter spokes) can be stronger than large wheels, but the number and thickness
of spokes, and quality of assembly, may cancel out any benefits.
559 wheel parts are more readily available, due to the popularity and wide spread of mountain bikes.
Smaller front wheels are less likely to contact rider's feet during low-speed turns.
Larger wheels roll easier, and provide greater ground clearance.
It's a tough call, both sizes do the job well. Though the larger 622mm wheel is more common on
WTB's, the 559mm wheel is becoming very popular for touring, due to its sturdiness and
universality.
Whichever wheel size you chose, make sure it is made from good quality components, (tyres, tubes,
hubs, spokes, rims, bearings, etc), assembled or checked by a competent mechanic, and carry a
spoke tool, and some spare spokes, of the applicable lengths.

Equipment and extras:
Saddle.
There is no component on a WTB, more personal, and more likely to influence rider's comfort and
enjoyment, than the saddle, which must be correctly positioned and firmly secured.
Beware of soft and spongy saddles. They are usually only comfortable for short journeys.
Serious cycle tourers tend to favour leather saddles, and often transfer their treasured friend from
one bicycle to another.
Initially, leather saddles may feel hard and uncomfortable, but they change shape, and improve in
comfort, the more they are ridden. They don't like getting wet, and benefit from being treated and
protected.
Pedals.
Plain flat pedals allow you to step on and off your bicycle, and walk in ordinary shoes.
Rubber pedals may be excellent when dry, but slippery when wet.
Metal pedals may have teeth to grip shoes, but they are also good at gouging legs.
Pedals with straps, or cleats hold feet on the pedal, and provide quick release.
Pedals with cleats need fittings on shoes, that can be damaged or uncomfortable when walking.
Left side pedals screw into the left side pedal crank using a left-hand thread, that means they are
fitted by turning the spanner anti-clockwise, and removed by turning the spanner clockwise.
Practice this at home, so you know how to do it, and ensure the pedal thread is tight, but not so tight
that it cannot be unscrewed by hand using a spanner.
Pannier Carriers.
The better pannier carriers are those made from steel.
Ensure that pannier attachment mechanisms are compatible with the carrier.
Low-rider carriers mount low on the front fork, providing better balance.
Front carriers may be stabilised by an interconnecting hoop.
Carrier attachment bolts should be at least 5 mm in diameter.
Panniers.
It is important that panniers are completely water-proof. Even if they are, it's a good idea to pack
stuff in separate sealed plastic bags (vacuumed or compressed to reduce volume), and to isolate
those damp and dirty things that need to be alone.
Pannier attachment mechanisms should be lockable, and stay locked in service.
Locks.
Nothing is more devastating than having your trusty WTB or cargo stolen whilst on tour.
Choose good and adequate locking systems, and use them whenever you think necessary.
Some WTB's are fitted with an integral head lock (Don't lose the key).
Frame Couplers.
Some brands of touring bicycles offer frame couplers that permit frames to be parted for easier
transportation. Most bicycle frame builders will install couplers on new or existing frames, providing
the top and bottom tubes are round.
Steering Limiter.
A steering limiter prevent the front wheel from swinging abruptly around, particularly when a bar
bag is fitted. It's a standard fitting on some WTB models.
Lights.
The purpose of lights is to be seen, as well as to see. It's wise to have front and rear lights available, with fresh
batteries, for occasions when your personal safety depends on them.
Some WTB's offer hub dynamos, and lighting systems, as standard equipment.

Rear Derailleur Guard.
A simple bolt-on device which protects the rear derailleur from getting bent or damaged.
Stand.
A good strong stand is necessary to keep a heavily loaded WTB securely upright, whilst stationary.
Bicycle stands come in single prop or double prop. They are usually clamped adjacent to the frame
bottom bracket, but some are fitted near to the front or rear wheel axle. It is essential they are secure
and properly adjusted.
Chainring Guard.
Protects outer chainrings from impact damage, and prevents your legs and/or trousers being
stabbed by dirty and sharp chainring teeth.
Suspension Seatpost.
A suspension seatpost is recommended, particularly on WTB's with rigid frames, straight forks, and
high-pressure tyres.
Mudguards.
Mudguards will save you (and anyone who is following closely behind) from water or mud splashes.
They should be wider than the tyres, and fitted with an end-flap to disperse water run-off.
Close-fitting mudguards are likely to clog up when used with knobbly tyres in muddy conditions.
Rear-View Mirror.
A rear-view mirror is essential for checking what is approaching from behind, but it's always
advisable to turn and look behind, particularly when preparing to move across in front of faster
moving traffic.

Adjustments, checks and maintenance:
Adjusting for comfort.
Rider comfort is of paramount importance. Discomfort may be caused by different factors.
Riders posture Affected by frame size, and location of seat and handlebars.
Jarring and vibration Affected by frame, fork, handlebar, seatpost, saddle, and tyre design.
Saddle The most common cause of discomfort and injury, and often the hardest to rectify,
other than to perservere.
Saddle Position:
The saddle should be level, in-line with the frame, and clamped tightly about half-way along
the saddle rails.
Clamp the seatpost at a position where when pedalling, your knee almost straightens out, but
not completely. The saddle is too high if your hips rock from side to side.
Handlebar Position:
Rotate or move the handlebars to a position where when riding, you are in a comfortable
posture, with your hands resting lightly on the handlebars.
Position the brake and gear controls as necessary, so they are easily reached and operated.
To achieve optimum handlebar position and comfort, it may be necessary to fit a different length
handlebar stem, or try another frame size.
Routine safety checks.
The following checks are advised to maintain bicycle serviceability and rider safety.
Any safety related defect or anomaly should be rectified as soon as possible.
Check for loose wheel spokes.

Check for, and remove any embedded items in tyres.
Check both wheels spin freely with no wobbles, side-play, or brake-binding.
Hold the front wheel firmly between your legs. Try to twist the handlebars out of
alignment with the wheel. They should not move. Check-tighten the head bolt or clamp.
Check brake pads for wear and correct alignment (not contacting the tyres).
Check brakes for proper and effective operation.
Adjust brakes if levers come within an inch of the handlebars.
Check wheel rims for wear (wear indicator).
Check that saddle and seatpost are secure.
Check carrier and mudguard attachment nut/bolts are tight.
Check chain for any stiff or damaged links.
Check pedals are undamaged and free to turn.

Rectification.
World touring cyclists need to be able to diagnose and rectify mechanical defects that could occur on
their WTB's, and carry spare parts and tools, appropriate to local conditions and resources.
It's advisable to practice basic mechanical tasks, such as Repair a punctured tube, or damaged tyre.
Adjust brake mechanisms and controls.
Adjust gear change mechanisms and controls.
Adjust head and wheel bearings.
Break and join a chain.
Remove and refit pedals (usually an airline requirement).
Adjust seat position.
Adjust and replace spokes.
Note: Rear wheel sprocket cluster may have to be removed for access.
Remove and refit pannier carriers.
Loosen and turn handlebars (An airline requirement).
The ultimate test of mechanical skills and self-confidence, is to fully dismantle and reassemble a
bicycle. It's a great feeling to ride a bicycle that you have assembled yourself.
Spare parts and tools.
Parts:
A handful of appropriate sized nuts, bolts and washers.

Two correct sized chain-joining links.
Two or three new tubes, with valves and notched caps. Keep spare tubes well protected.
A few wheel spokes, with nipples. Rear wheel spokes may use spokes of different lengths.
A spare tyre may be advisable in areas where the correct type and size is unobtainable.
One of each, brake and gear control inner cables.
Basic Tools:
A set of short spanners (6 to 15 mm) Only if your WTB has hexagonal nuts and bolt heads.
A set of 1.5 to 8 mm Allen keys Older bikes may require imperial sized Allen keys.
A good quality tube and tyre repair kit, with appropriate sized patches.
Two tyre levers.
Screwdrivers for slotted and Phillips (#1 and 2) screws.
A penknife.
A small pair of pliers or vice-grips.
A small adjustable spanner.
A long 15 mm spanner. For wheel nuts (when fitted).
Special Tools: - Be sure they are the correct size and type for your WTB.
A spoke tool for adjusting or changing spokes.
Two thin spanners - for adjusting wheel bearings and removing pedals.
A cable cutter - for cutting brake and gear control cables.
A chain tool for fitting, removing, or adjusting length, of a chain.
A sprocket cassette tool to gain access for fitting spokes on sprocket side of rear wheels.
May not be necessary, if holes in sprockets, provide sufficient access.

Lubrication.
Wheel, bottom bracket, head and pedal bearings all require grease as a lubricant, and have seals to
prevent ingress of water and other contaminants.
Everything else that rolls, pivots or slides, needs lubricating oil, including the chain, control cables,
brake mechanisms and levers, gear levers, and derailleur mechanisms.
Adverse comments are often made about thin aerosol spray lubricants, but they work well when they
penetrate deep into the target area, leaving a layer of lubrication when the solvent agent evaporates.
Any lubrication on chain exterior surfaces is serving no purpose, other than collecting dirt.
Tyre Pressure Inflation Punctures.
Most bicycle tyres have recommended inflation pressures indicated on their sidewalls.
For your comfort and safety, it is essential that these pressures are maintained.
Don't ride a bicycle with a very soft or fully deflated tyre. Not only is it dangerous for you, but the
tyre, tube and wheel rim may become damaged beyond repair.
A good tyre pressure gauge is necessary to determine tyre pressures accurately, but with practice,
you can quickly tell if a tyre is under-inflated, by pressing down hard on the tyre with your thumb.
The wise long-distance cyclist carries a pump (better a large one), at least two spare serviceable
tubes (protected from damage), a puncture repair kit, a couple of tyre levers, and fits valve caps.
Despite warnings not to use garage air supplies, they can be used with care. The problem is not
excessive pressure (cars have lower tyre pressures than bicycles), but the sudden rush of air that
must be expected and controlled. Make sure the tyre is properly engaged on the wheel rim.
Punctures are caused mainly by something external penetrating the tyre (when the puncture is likely
to be at the top or side of the tube), or by something internal, like a spoke thread protruding through
the protective rim tape. (when the puncture is likely to be at the bottom of the tube).
You soon know when you've got a puncture, but it may be difficult to find what caused it.
It is essential that you find the cause, otherwise it may puncture the ongoing tube.
A close internal and external examination of the entire tyre may be successful, but a more precise
method is to keep the removed tyre and tube in the same orientation as when fitted, and inflate the
tube to locate the leak position. The cause should be found at the adjacent position on the tyre.
Leaking valve inserts can be tightened, or replaced, using a special tool, or a notched valve cap.
Leaks at the base of the valve stem are a frequent cause of deflation, and usually can't be fixed.
Puncture repair kits vary a lot in quality and usefulness. It pays to get a good one, and to practice
doing some repairs, so as to develop and gain confidence in your technique.
A poor patch can leak or come off. Try not to carry patched tubes as spares.
Whenever a tyre is removed from a wheel - Check the wheel rim tape for condition and proper
fitment. Ensure spoke threads are not protruding through the spoke nipple heads or the rim tape.

Derailleur mechanisms.
A worn-out, misaligned or damaged derailleur mechanism can really spoil your day.
Before blaming the derailleur, be sure that the problem is not in the chain, chainring, sprockets,
control cable, or maybe your WTB has an over-flexible frame, that changes gear for you.
The more a derailleur mechanism wears, the less responsive it will be, and more likely to skip gears.
On a properly aligned rear derailleur, the two chain guide wheels should be vertically and
horizontally parallel to the rear wheel (providing the wheel is properly centralised).
The long-reach rear drailleurs used on WTB's, hang out in the breeze, and are particularly
susceptible to being bent or twisted out of alignment by contact with just about anything. A bolt-on
rear derailleur guard is available to provide some degree of protection.
Most WTB frames have a removable aluminium rear derailleur hanger which is designed to bend or
break, rather than damage the frame.
If the hanger is bent or twisted, then the derailleur is unlikely to function properly. Being made from
soft metal, the hanger may be carefully straightened, but there is a risk that it may break.
A broken hanger must be replaced with one of identical pattern (there are dozens of them), which is
a tricky job. It's best to carry a spare hanger, and practice changing it.
Derailleur Adjustment.
Front and rear derailleurs have HI and LO adjustment screws which limit their range of
movement to ensure the chain will properly engage, but not overlap, the smallest and largest
sprockets and chainrings. The correct sequence and degree of adjustment is vital to success.

Road Safety
Road safety tips.
Road safety is more than following rules. Rules are not always be the best or safest options.
Your safety is more to do with personal responsibility, common-sense, attitude, sharing, caring,
behaving, thinking, and doing. Here are some tips to help you survive.
It usually takes two people to collide. Make sure you're not one of them.
Wear highly visible clothing. Wear a helmet when it is the law to do so.
Expect the unexpected (Car doors opening).
Watch out for potholes, loose gravel. glass, tram-lines, drains, children, and loose animals.
Be predictable with your actions. What you do affects others.
When possible, maintain a steady straight line, about a metre from the kerb.
Keep on your side of the road, away from fast-moving traffic.
Avoid braking or changing direction suddenly.
Signal your intentions before stopping or changing direction.
Don't assume everyone can see you, even when they are looking straight at you.
Focus on the road, about 50 - 100 metres ahead. Check your mirror frequently.
Keep your ears tuned for approaching traffic.
When riding in groups - Point out hazards ahead (potholes, drains, gravel, glass, etc.).
- Stay in single-file on busy or narrow roads.
- Don't follow too close. Leave gaps for other traffic.
Get off the road, when it's obviously the safest thing to do.
Enjoy your cycling. Be careful, and have a long and happy life

Introduction.
Custom-made WTB's start with just a set of tubes which are made into a frame by a professional
bicycle framemaker. The frame is designed to fit the customer, and suit its intended purpose.
Customers selects the type and quality of components, and the colour scheme. The end-product is a
one-off personalised WTB. Most framemakers can also install frame connectors onto frames with
round tubes. Connectors allow frames to be dismantled, making bicycle transportation easier.

Author.
Ed Austin is a cosmopolitan Manxman. He made his first bicycle out of bits and pieces found in a
local rubbish tip. It had no brakes, and the wheels were different sizes, but it was the start of Ed's
long association and love for cycling and bicycles.
In his profession as a licenced aircraft maintenance engineer, Ed has travelled the world, and has
maintained military aircraft for the Royal Air Force, and civil aircraft for several major airlines.
He has raced and toured with bicycles in the Isle of Man, UK, Malaysia Australia and New Zealand,
including a memorable ride across the island of Borneo, from Sandakan to Kuching.
He is an active member of the Auckland Cycle Touring Association.
Fixing bicycles is one of Ed's hobbies. He has recently repaired 80 used bicycles and distributed
them to villages in Samoa, and has spent several years making donated bicycles serviceable for
refugees in New Zealand.
Ed is a bicycle maintenance tutor for local colleges in the Auckland City area, and is qualified as a
NZ Cycling Road Safety instructor.
