Justice after police formally charged him Wednesday but was later
whisked off to the Monrovia Central Prison on order of Associate
Magistrate James Dudu when lawyers representing him failed to secure
a US$5,000 bail bond.
Prior to Koijees release on Monday Magistrate Dudu told
FrontPageAfrica that he did not deny the defendant bail as being
widely speculated in the media but rather said that the bail bond
intended for the defendant was never accompanied by a bank statement.
Let me clarify that I never denied this defendant bail but his bond was
not accompanied by a bank statement, Dudu said after signing the bail
bond to have Koijee released from prison Monday.
Montgomery had told the police, according to the charge sheet that
he was stripped naked and personally flogged by Mulbah Morlu,
Jefferson Koijee and Habbakkuk Wommie when he had gone to the
CDC headquarters upon invitation from Koijee.
According to the victim before he was flogged by Koijee who had
earlier expressed disappointment in him on ground that he saw his car
parked in the fence of the suspended chairman of the CDC George
Solo.
Aggrieved Partisan expresses dismay
Montgomery, the CDC partisan who alleged beating led to Koijees
detention told FrontPageAfrica that he was very surprised at the
conduct of his fellow CDC partisans to protest the arrest of Koijee
whom he said committed a criminal offence.
Today people are jubilating because Montgomery had been flogged
but let those who are jubilating be watchful said Montgomery in an
interview with FPA.

Monroviaack home after controversies surrounding several issues in

the main opposition Congress for Democratic Change, the
political leader of the party, a senatorial candidate in the
ensuing 2014 senatorial election for Montserrado County,
George M. Weah has hit hard on state security officers for what he is
terming as violating the rights of innocent Liberian citizens.
The debacle regarding the ousting of the party Chairman George Solo
has been hampering stability in the CDC culminating into physical
assault amongst partisans with at least one partisan brutalized allegedly
by fellow partisans.
Party Youth League Chairman, Jefferson Koijee who turned himself
over to police in connection with the beating of partisan Gbeh-Salinto
Montgomery was detained for over five days.
On Monday, Weah blasted the detention of Koijee as illegal and
a violation of his rights, describing Deputy Police Director for
Administration, Abraham Kromah as a former rebel who participated
in the killing of thousands of innocent Liberians.
Said Weah: Mr. Kromah behavior these days, harassing our innocent
citizens is wrong; although he is a former Chief of Staff that killed
innocent people in this country; I think he needs to come back to the
law and behave like a civil person and behave in a civil manner, not to
be harassing innocent citizens.
Speaking at the headquarters of the CDC where Koijee was welcomed
following his release from further detention after Magistrate James
Dudu granted a bail bond of US$5,000 Weah cautioned the police to
stop violating the rights of Liberians.
The CDC political leader said partisans of his party are citizens of the
country and should be protected under the law.
I want the police to understand that CDcians are also Liberians, we are
citizens, people will not just accuse our citizens and partisans and they
just go to jail, that is wrong, Weah warned.
According to Weah, Deputy Director Kromah assured him that Koijee
would face questioning and be allowed to go back home, noting that he
was surprise to hear that the Youth leader of the CDC has been in jailed
beyond the 48 hours prescribed by law.
The police director assured me that Jeff Koijee will only be questioned
and he will go back to his resident but again I will say the police director
lied to us. He lied to me particularly. I told Koijee to turn himself over
because I respect the law of the Republic and I told Jeff Koijee the best
thing to do is to go to the law and answer any question but again he told
me that it was not to put him in prison but to hear that Jeff Koijee has
been in jail for more than 48 hours is wrong to do so and I will ask the
leader of this country, madam Sirleaf to make sure that citizens will not
just be accused and go to jail without the law, we have to protect our
citizens Weah explained.
Will resign when necessary
Weah, a candidate for the pending senatorial election and Liberias
Peace Ambassador has also disclosed that he will resign his post when
necessary.
I am the peace Ambassador of the Republic of Liberia; the press did
not appoint me or the press did not force me to serve my people. I am
serving my people because I love them, if I see the need to resign, if
I dont see it to continue this job, I will do so with respect, he said.
In the wake of the comment by Weah that he will resign when necessary
FrontPageAfrica has gathered that the CDC political leader is pondering
tendering his resignation from the post of Peace Ambassador to further
his senatorial ambition.
The CDC political leader says he has been criticizing the government
on major issues but cannot fight in order to make people know that he
is advocating for the Liberian people.
I have criticized the government on the ills in society. I do not have
to fight the government to say what I want to say, we talk about ills in
society, we talk about life been harsh for our people. I dont need to
use any harsh words to show that I am advocating for the people of
Liberia, Weah furthered.
He says the legal team of the CDC is looking into the illegal detention
of Koijee and will take a decision.
We have our legal team, we will sit with them and they will direct us

what decision will be taken and what strategy will be put in place to
address the situation, he vowed.
Freed on $5k bail
Koijee was released on bail as dozens of CDC partisans gathered at
the prison entrance to greet him. Dressed in a red T-shirt and blue jean
pants Koijee waived and was later escorted by two lawmakers of the
CDC Thomas Fallah Montserrado County District#5 and Acarous
Gray to the waiting party supporters who lifted him shoulder high with
jubilation.
Outside the Monrovia Central Prison, Koijee condemned what the
circumstances that led to his arrest. The youth leader said he voluntarily
turned himself into the hands of the police, escorted by Rep. Thomas
Fallah (CDC, Montserrado County, District). I witnessed a conspiracy,
that did not give me an opportunity to be questioned, that did not give
me an opportunity to make a statement but instead I was incarcerated.
Koijee said when his lawyers requested that he be turned over, the
police refused. I was placed behind bars with armed robbers, those
who were charged for armed robbery. In fact Deputy Police Director
for Operations, A.B. Kromah spoke to an alleged armed robber by the
name of Bin Laden; hes currently in prison, he said to me, he can
testify, that man was given U$US50 dollars to manhandle me in prison
but luckily for me, being a grass root leader of the mighty Congress for
Democratic Change. When the guy confronted me he said, look, you
are my leader and we will not yield to the temptation of Col. Kromah,
that was the first instance.
Koijee also alleged that the following day, a delegation from the Robert
Sirleaf for Senator camp headed by Jake Kabakollie took him upstairs
escorted by Col. Kromah asking him to give himself on quote to Mr.
Sirleaf. And I said how is that possible.
Koijee said after he refused, he was told that Mr. Sirleaf would be
responsible to send him to London so that he could be able to foster his
education, so that my absence would signify a victory to Mr. Sirleaf.
Koijee however noted that when he refused to do that, he was placed
behind a cell with a man who was vomiting and toileting. That is
evident. I think the UNMIL took note of the inmate and I think that
has been recorded. But let the message be clear: You cannot break the
spirit of Koijee.
Koijee was last week charged by the Liberia National police (LNP) on
two-counts of aggravated assault and kidnapping in connection with
the alleged flogging of another partisan Gbeh Salinfo Montgomery on
the grounds of the party.
Koijee was arraigned at the Monrovia City Court at the Temple of

Executive interfered in Koijees detention

Morlu, CDC Vice Chairman for Operations and Mobilization, stated
that Koijee was denied bond and sent to jail because the Executive
branch of government was interfering in the work of the Judiciary.
Let the Liberian people know that the judiciary is no more independent
as the executive branch of government is interfering in its work, said
Morlu.
Montserrado County District #8 Representative Acarous Gray, who told
reporters that Koijee is a true revolutionary whose arrest and detention
was politically motivated.
We have long since told the Liberian people that this old lady has
failed us and there was a need to resign but if she wants a bitter Liberia
we will make it bitter for her because we have over 1,000 men who
could get in the street to demand her resignation, said Gray.
With Koijees release on bond, the aggravated and kidnapping charges
against him will now be heard when the Monrovia City Court issues
a notice of assignment though there has been no date set by the lower
magisterial court.
Koijees release from detention did not come without incident as
Beatrice Washington, a CDC supporter sustained injuries during the
fracas ahead of Koijees freedom.
Explaining her ordeal in tears madam Washington said she was
brutalized by a Police away from the Monrovia central prison where
the CDC supporters gathered.
He just took the stick and lay it right here (pointing to her bloodied
face) thats how he pushed me when he pushed me and I said ehn you
see and you see, then my money was in my pocket that was hundred
United States dollars with my watch and cell phone. Everything
dropped, he was still beating me so I say what thing I do, you beating
me all over my body, Beatrice explained.
Theyve come to kill us
CDC lawmaker Solomon George also frowned at the beating of
Beatrice saying: These people were not at the prison area they drove
them from there, she had crossed to UN Drive Center Street area and
they beat her face. How can you beat someone face like this
Lawmaker George said Robert Sirleaf, son of President Sirleaf cannot
win election in Liberia.
Robert Sirleaf is just wasting his time, he will never, he can never win
George Weah. Even right now, we want Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to step
down but because of democracy because of the tenets of democracy,
we say let it be so. It is just the matter of time. To every time, there is a
seasons and purpose, said Representative George.
Added George: These people have come to kill us; I am saying Madam
Sirleaf, you brought war to our country, I am not afraid to say it. It is
George Weah who want to be lenient with you. We will not be lenient
with you; just how Ghankay is gone to The Hague, his son is in jail in
America the same thing will be for you and your son in Jesus name.

CAUGHT
PANTS DOWN

IN THE MIDST OF THE EBOLA EPIDEMIC

Dr. Louise Mapleh Kpoto, Resident Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Nairobi,
Kenyatta National Hospital, Nairobi, Kenya , Contributing Writer

SHAMEFUL PUBLIC STEALING TAKES

GOL CREDIBILITY FURTHER DOWN

LATE LAST WEEK, another embarrassing report against the

Government of Liberia surfaced in which a committee setup
by the government to probe the confiscation and subsequent
vanishing of over two hundred and forty five thousand
United States dollars belonging to Korean nationals.
IN ITS RECOMMENDATION, the committee headed by
one of Liberias topnotch lawyers Dean and Professor of
Law, Louis Arthur Grimes School of Law, University of
Liberia; Cllr. David A. B. Jallah wants the Government to
repay US$247,500 seized from the Koreans.
PART OF RECOMMENDATION stated The Government
of Liberia refunds to the Korean nationals the full amount
of the Two Hundred, Forty Seven Thousand, Five Hundred
United States Dollars (US$247, 500.00) which they
withdrew from the International Bank of Liberia (IBLL) on
July 8, 2014, and which they proceeded with directly to the
City King Hotel, immediately thereafter, and were arrested
shortly after their arrival.
SINCE THE ARREST of the Koreans and the confiscation
of the amount, there is no record that the amount was
seized to be used as Fruit of Crime (FOC) in proceedings
for whatever crime the Koreans might have committed that
prompted their arrest by agents of the NSA.
THE SEIZURE and vanishing of such sum of money is a
glaring example of the level of public stealing existing within
the ranks and files of the Government of Liberia without
concrete actions by the Executive Branch of Government,
headed by the President.
THE CURRENT saga involving the Koreans points to what
has now become collusion between state security agencies
and senior government officials who arrest and dish out
money belonging to foreign nationals without any form
of legal proceedings and justification for expending these
funds.
NIGERIAN BUSINESSMAN Valentine Ayika was arrested
by state security officers at the Roberts International Airport
over five years ago with an amount of US$508,000 seized
from him.
STATE SECURITY officers aided by the Executive
Mansion, the Ministry of Justice and other senior officials
of government insisted that the Ayika did not declare the
money and as such was held for money laundering.
AYIKA WAS NEVER arraigned in court to face charges
for money laundering but his money vanished in thin air in
Liberia with trace as the amount was never deposited into
Government of Liberia Consolidated account or held in any
escrow account to be kept until legal proceedings against the
Nigerian.
INTERESTINGLY, THE Nigerian money was distributed
amongst state security agencies with the Ministry of State
for Presidential Affairs, the National Security Agency, the
Ministry of Justice all sharing the money.
A NEVER PUBLISHED audit conducted by the General
Auditing Commission of Liberia found out found out
through explanation by some senior officials of government
that portion of the Nigerian businessmans money was used
to finance the reconstruction of the fence around President
Ellen Johnson Sirleafs residence and the rest divided
amongst senior security officials.
SENIOR SECURITY officials have always defended that
such money are used for covet operations and given the
sensitive and embarrassing nature of the findings, the audit
of the Nigerian businessman money has never been made
public up to date.
THE NIGERIAN through his lawyer later took the case to the
Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)
Court where he won the case and the Government of Liberia
was ordered to repay the money with compounded interest

iberias immediate pre-Ebola era had a maternal

mortality rate of 1072/100,000 live births (2013
DHS key findings), an evidence of disimprovement
from 770/100,000 live births in 2007(WHO), and
therefore now having one of the highest maternal mortality
rates in the sub-region.
The devastating Ebola Virus outbreak is no pacifier as it is
further exacerbating the statistics of maternal deaths thus
producing the greatest challenge in the care of the pregnant
mother.
There are several factors, both general and specific, that are
responsible for the vulnerability of the expectant mother:
A. General

Cultural and traditional believes and practices couple
with a weak health system
B. Specifically
The sudden mass closures of both public and private health
care facilities as a result of the Ebola crisis (a) deaths of skilled
health workers who were in the early stages neither trained
nor equipped to identify or treat Ebola infected patients, (b)
consequent fear and panic among health workers who refused
to work because they saw their colleagues infected at the rate
of, on average, one health worker infected daily and one death
every two days (calculated from MOH regular situation report
to date ).
Uniquely for the pregnant mother whose hemodynamic
physiology and indwelling fetus also likely serving as a (Petridish) medium for the growth and virulence of the virus, the
risk is highest and therefore infection almost always leads to
the death of both mother and child. To date, there is no known
record of a pregnant woman surviving the Ebola virus disease
infection in Liberia. The female to male infection and death
ratios, according to the MOHSW is High, skewed toward the
females.
Maternal care, which includes, care for health of the woman
during pregnancy, childbirth, and in the Puerperium (6weeks
after delivery) has suffered a dramatic decline during the
epidemic. This has led to expectant mothers seeking care from
traditional birth attendants and other unlikely places. In the
process at times they give birth in streets while shopping for

available health facility.

The situation at JFK hospital epitomizes what is happening all
over the country where mothers are rushed in weak anaemic
and moribund in obstructed labour after running all over the
city looking for where to deliver. Majority come with the baby
already dead in uterus. Many of these mothers have died due
to obstetrics complications that could otherwise be avoided if
handled early in hospital setting. These complications include
fistula formation, puerperal sepsis, and postpartum mental
disorder etc. thus making motherhood a tragic and humiliating
experience instead of the expected joyful and fulfilling one.
The post-Ebola maternal morbidity and mortality statistics is
surely going to increase above the 1076/100,000 live births due
to the multiple factors enumerated above, if the government
does not take advantage of the positive feedback of this crisis
and accelerate opening of health facilities and save our mothers
and infants
Although the rate of infection is reducing, thanks to the
enormous international goodwill and all Liberians both at
home and abroad who have joined in the fight against the
EVD. Ebola will remain a public health challenge in Liberia
as evidenced from other countries. We therefore need to keep
up the best practices and behavioural changes we have learned
over the past months. We must also harness the opportunities
provided by the precedent international goodwill to improve
our health system and infrastructures, build and strengthen
health manpower capacity in order not only to be prepared for
future outbreaks but also to have an efficient healthcare system
that will help decrease the maternal morbidity and mortality
long after the international partners are gone.
Finally I pray for all expectant mothers to be protected from
EBOLA and advise them to seek help and advice early in their
pregnancies. I also pray for the souls of all those who died
including those Liberians who died in their mothers wombs
even though they do not and will never form part of the vital
statistics of deceased Liberians in this national crisis.
To my health worker colleagues I say many thanks for the
sacrifices and my condolences to the families of those who laid
down their lives for all of us during the course of performing
their professional duties.

over the period since the money was used.

A QUIET settlement is said to have taken place between the
Government of Liberia and the Nigerian businessman where
accordingly state funds have been used to repay an amount
shared between top security officials.
AGAIN THE government has been caught pants down with
another report pointing to the seizure and usage of a huge sum
of over US$245,000 but this time with low level officers of the
NSA recommended to face prosecution.
THE OPERATIVES of the National Security Agency (five in
all) who were directly involved with the arrest of the Korean
and Sierra Leonean nationals, and their co-conspirators (two
who do not work with the NSA) be handed over to the Ministry
of Justice for prosecution in order to clear the name and image
of the National Security Agency, the Cllr. Jallah report stated.
WHAT IS MIND buckling is how can junior or low level
security officers be held for such amount of money when the
security agencies involved have never raised qualms about any
unlawful attitude of these low lever officers.
UNDER PRESSURE from new paper publications a while
ago, the NSA in a statement signed by Mr. Nathaniel Hodge
Deputy Director of the NSA said, it received intelligence that
the KOREANS WERE in possession of illegal combustible
and hazardous materials, including Cyanide in a local hotel in
Monrovia.
THE NSA seized the individuals, counterfeit monies,
equipment and hazardous materials, verifying their purpose

was to smelt gold in a hotel room for shipment outside Liberia.

The NSA turned over all evidence to the Ministry of justice
on July 15th, 2014 based on a stay of investigation letter to
Director Sirleaf from Cllr. Dixon Barnes deputy Minister for
the administration and Public safety, the statement indicated.
THE MINISTRY OF JUSTICE has since failed to say whether
it received any money from the NSA but the report of the
Committee recommending the Ministry of Justice which the
NSA claimed is investigating the same matter to prosecute
security officers involved leaves many unanswered questions.
IT IS LIKE A PARTY to the saga serving as the judge, meaning
the Koreans will never get justice for their money.
THERE IS NO concrete explanation that low level security
officers will seize and use an amount of US$247,000 without
the knowledge of their bosses and with no culprits being held
for such action.
SINCE THE Koreans money was seized several months ago,
the National Security Agency in the middle of the saga claimed
that the Ministry of Justice is investigating the issue but is yet
to make known the whereabouts of the money.
THIS IS JUST another classical example of broad day theft by
senior officials of security agencies have reduced the country
to a gangster paradise where foreigners have become prey for
their greed for wealth, seizing money which later vanishes.
FROM HARBORING fugitives to aiding the escape of
indicted individuals, these senior security officials continue to
bring the credibility of the Government of Liberia down.

An absolute affirmation, not only recognized by Liberians, but by
global media houses. For me a Liberian journalist in America, I
have always told my listeners that FPA is, no doubt the number one
newspaper for and by Liberians in and outside Liberia.
We admire your courage, but then Rodney Sieh, it is perhaps in your

whose second home was dictator William Tubman's notorious South

LET SLEEPING
DOGS LIE
A MESSAGE OF PEACE

ccept my personal congratulations for being the

winner of the Reporters Without Borders Award
on Press Freedom and Freedom of Information.
Congratulations!

Please permit me to use this medium to carry on my watch

dog duty and responsibility with regards to issues of national
concern which, I believed, may shift the destiny of Africas
oldest independent state-Liberia, especially in these critical
times of our existence as people and nation.
I do hear from people that IN TIME OF PEACE, PREPARE
FOR WAR; AND IN TIME OF WAR, PREPARE FOR
PEACE. If the latter is to prevail, then we are heading for
serious trouble. Reverse this statement and you will find it
more troubling. Doesnt it sound ridiculous? Indeed, it is.
Preparing for war during peace time, like the case of Liberia,
is the worst thing any citizen will condone. Because the ten
years of sustained peace we are enjoying today is the result
of many sacrifices and pains we went through during the 14
years of civil conflict.
As we gear towards the Special Senatorial Election in
December of this year, and the anticipated politically charged
season in 2017, we will find our political actors discussing
issues so as to convince the electorate to join their political
kingdom. This, in my mind, doesnt require inflammatory
statements. We do not want to succumb to threats in order
to pledge our allegiance to any political party or individual.
If one believes in his strength to give victory to his team, his
attributes as a political player must be convincing. It should
be proven by his deeds, not mere words.
National elections in Liberia, like any other country, are faced
with numeral challenges. As such, if one feels dissatisfied
with the electoral process, the proper channel is to follow the
organic laws which is the constitution and the election laws.
Liberia is bigger than any individual, no matter his/her status
in society. Anything other than seeking due process, like in
this case, may be a recipe for chaos.
Tremendous progress has been made in the areas of
infrastructural development, economic revitalization, roads
rehabilitation, and general construction and so on. This
brings to mind how far we have gone as a people and nation.
Fellow Liberians, we have come a long way already. There is
no doubt that we have reached this far in our national renewal
because of the resilience, patience, and understanding of the
ordinary Liberian
citizen. Without you and me, it would have been impossible
to make such great strides in so short a time. But the job is
not finished.

The future now requires our attention, our continued focus

and our unity.
We call on all stake holders to let sleeping dogs lie; for to
awaken them may not only pose danger to the one awakening
them, but may as well be threatening to innocent by-standers.
Why should we be divided
in a season that will sooner or later leave us and go? And
then sooner or later we will remain here for a long period. We
may agree to disagree on issues, but we must not condone
lawlessness again.
We have seen so many cadavers during our civil unrest.
Lessons have been learnt. Progress is what we are yearning
for and not backwardness. So, lets join hands to protect
Mama Liberia; let
bygones be bygones and move our only dear country onto an
irreversible path. This must be our goal.
As it is said: In union strong success is sure. We cannot fail,
with God above our right to prove, we will over all prevail.

The Editor,

et me begin by expressing my admiration of your

unique stance on putting the torchlight on corruption
in Liberia. It is a nationalistic and patriotic act and
I believe, in spite of the gross indifference from pot
bellies corrupt gluttons, is making some difference in our fiscal
space. I know that many of your groundbreaking revelations
have brought to light hard core corruption in high places
(Knucklesgate I II III) so much so that on many occasions it
has forced our corrupt-friendly president to act, sometimes
against her best wishes. In many ways, some of those steps
will remain our foundation of change coming imminently to
this nation.
Please remain steadfast. Do not compromise. The silent
majority of grateful Liberians will always applaud you
especially that you dare to face the foe with boldness and
bravery and can create space for a general like Martin Scott
to be on the frontline as we all fight to save our dear mama
Liberia.
Till I write again, God will be your protector.

UP BRANDS ALI SYLLA

Monroviahe ruling Unity Party

is not taking kindly to
a decision of Ali Sylla,
the partys candidate
in the upcoming Senatorial
elections to bow out of the race,
citing medical reasons.
Mr. Sylla last week withdrew
from the process, notifying the
National Elections Commission
of his intentions to quit the race.
NEC Chair Cllr. Jerome Korkoya
confirmed last week that Sylla
had
officially
withdrawn
from the pending senatorial
election but insisted that the
UP candidate photo will remain
on the ballot paper. Yes, we
received communication on the
withdrawal of Ali Syla but his
name will remain on the ballot
because he did not notify the
commission before printing of
the ballot papers.
FrontPageAfrica
reported
Monday that the party was
contemplating replacing Sylla on
the ballot.
On Monday, Mr. Amos Tweh
the Youth National Congress
Chair, addressing reporters at a
news conference at the Partys
headquarters in Congo Town,
accused Sylla of selling his soul
and hiding behind an unproven

illness, describing him as a

courageous liar, a conscienceless
young man, whose action
to unilaterally surrender his
candidacy, is valid proof of fact
that political hustlers are still
being born.
Said Tweh: Our effort to place
Sylla, the sellout, Sylla, the
betrayer; Sylla the Coward; and
Sylla; the ingrate on the ticket
of the party had no precarious
motive, but one with the desire
to harness his potential and
elevate his political structure in
a country with immense political
possibilities.
Added Tweh: We cannot justify
our decision to place Ali Sylla,
a relatively unknown partisan,
on the partys ticket beyond
reason. Our motive was clear;
our agenda was defined, our
plan well thought-out, but never
did we know that syllas agenda
was embellished in greed, selfinterest, quick happiness and
personal gratification.
Tweh lamented that it is
unbelievable
that
Syllas
justification for withdrawal is
illness when he has been posting
photos on Facebook with images
portraying his activities of
different nature.
Tweh said while the party

A SELLOUT
We cannot justify our decision to place Ali Sylla, a relatively unknown partisan on the partys ticket beyond reason.
Our motive was clear, our agenda was defined, our plan well thought-out, but never did we know that Syllas agenda was
embellished in greed, self-interest, quick happiness and personal gratification. Unity Party Youth

remains swept by the unpleasant

wave of surprise and very
disappointed in Syllas sheered
ingratitude, they are not deterred.
Tweh promised that UP will
not be passive in the upcoming
elections, and that the youth
congress in alliance with key
organs of the Party, will build
consensus around a candidate
whose vision is very particularly
similar to the Unity Party.
The UP youth further disclosed
that Mr. Sylla and Mr. Teeko

Yorlay former Nimba county

Development superintendent are
the only two youthful partisans
who declared their interest in
contesting on the Party ticket
in Nimba and Montserrado as a
result encouragement from the
Partys national youth congress.
He also said as a result of a
unanimous decision from the
Partys Executive Committee to
collaborate with Senator Prince
Johnson, Yorlay was made to
relegate his ambition without

preconditions something he
described as a symptomatic
manifestation of true partisanship
committed to partys principles.
While Syllas dollars might
have fattened his pockets and
hastened his journey out of
Liberia, what remains a fact
to the UP youth congress
is that we have completely
dissipated confidence in him
and a dwindled trust in this Sylla
who feels that chicanery should
characterize youthful political

life that is sadly punctuated

with huge businessman appetite
of fattening pockets or wallets
without
considering
the
consequences for the future,
Tweh said.
Sylla not abandoned
Tweh dismissed suggestions
from Syllas camp that he was
abandoned by the party, asserting
that the payment of registration
fees is a key requirement by the
National Elections Commission
for individual party candidates
whilst the partys responsibility
is to keep a bank balance to serve
as guarantor for all candidates
approved to contest on the
partys ticket.
In fact, Tweh explained, every
candidate, consistent with the
UPs policy, was requested to
develop a campaign strategy that
is unique to their circumstances
and that the rest of the candidates
have so far made significant
efforts, but Sylla did not due to
his utterly outrageous motives,
Tweh charged.
Asked which candidates are
currently on the partys radar,
Tweh fell short of naming names,
but said, it will be anyone who
fits the partys policy and is in
line with the partys vision.

Snowe Heralds Goodwill Donation to Liberia

Al-Varney Rogers avarney.rogers@frontpageafricaonline.com/ 0886304498

Monroviaeveral
medical
centers across Liberia
receive
sanitary
materials and medical
supplies through the effort of
Montserrado County District Six
Representative Edwin Snowe.
The centers benefitting from such
gesture are E.LW.A Hospital,
JFK Memorial Hospital and
ETU, Phebe, Catholic Hospital
and the Bomi government
hospital.
Making
the
Presentation
Representative Snowe said, the
items donated was as the result
of a visit by some good friends
of Liberia who upon their return
rallied support for the fight
against Ebola in Liberia.
Some good friends of Liberia
who visited Liberia and made
contact with us have made all
this possible. This is the third 40foot container, Snowe said.
Snowe said, the supply to
medical centers is not just
intended to fight Ebola but is also
meant for the restoration of basic
health services.
There are things here for Bomi
hospital where I got my farm
based on the condition of Bomi

Hospital. They sent a supply

to JFK and the ETU; they also
thought about the restoration
of basic health services, Snowe
said.
Snowe Continued: We brought
two X-ray machines, this 40-foot
container with Ebola materials,
PPEs; Im very excited about
this.
Snowe said, the brain behind the
donation is Dr. Kelvin Stresser
and his wife. The lawmaker
said he is also expecting an
ambulance and medical supplies
for his district.
Added Rep. Snowe: What
they do is that they find friends
of goodwill in the U.S that
put together resources and
contribute; we work with them
for the shipment.
Snowe said the donation means
a whole lot for Liberia and
urged Liberians not to become
too complacent as the Ebola
infections decline. We need to
start concentrating on how we
can restore basic health services.
If we as Liberians cannot do this
for ourselves, I wonder who will
do it for us. Every time a Liberian
do this it means a lot to the fight
against Ebola, Snowe said.

Barkedu, Lofa County ressed in an African

lappa suit, four
months old Fatu
Bayor lies quietly
on her mothers lap. Saliva and
breast milk pours down from her
mouth as her mother cleans it up
frequently.
The baby may never recall
the predicament her family,
including her 26 year-old, mother
Fanta Baryor went through in
Barkedu, Quardu Gboni District.
The town has so far recorded
the highest Ebola deaths in Lofa
County.
Baryor said little Fatu began
showing signs and symptoms of
the deadly virus in late August
2014, barely few days after
dozens of people including the
babys father died of Ebola.
Several other relatives buried
him.
The mother of the young child
told FrontPageAfrica that she
cared for her late husband, while
at the same time nursing Fatu.
They became ill and had to be
taken to the 157-bedFoya Ebola
Treatment Unit now recording
zero new cases. Baryor said
two days after they arrived in
Foya onboard an ambulance, she
and the child tested positive for
Ebola.They were treated at the
MSF run facility in Foya, where
she said they spent 21 days.
It has been over a month now
with no news cases of Ebola or
deaths reported so far from the
town. But the Ebola nightmare
in Barkedu began with Laiye
Barwor, described by many
as a humanitarian who fell ill
in Monrovia and was admitted
at the John F. Kennedy Ebola
Treatment Unit.
His relatives rejected that that
their son had Ebola, so they
got annoyed and went for him
overnight at JFK and forced him
out of the center, said 48 yearold Musa K. Sesay, the General
Town Chief of Barkedu.
He said Barwor had tested
positive for the deadly disease,
but the family was in strong
denial.
They took him to Barkedu
so he could be easily crossed
over to neighboring Guinea for
traditional medication, said
Sesay.
Many citizens of the town
embraced Barwor, even on
his sick bed and were willing
to do anything to save his life
according to Sesay.
This man was doing well for his
family and all what people(health
workers) talked we never
believed it, he said.And when
someone is doing well for you
they get sick our belief is that we
will not just leave him alone.
He narrates that whenBarwor
arrived in Barkedu, he was
quickly rushed to Mancenta

EBOLA

EBOLA DEATH LIST

WHY BARKEDUTOWN IN LOFA COUNTY TOPPED THE

The people advised us that we should not bathe dead bodies but at that time we never believed that Ebola existed. So the people went and bathed the body.
So from there they had contacts with each other. Thats how the Ebola spread here. Musa K. Sesay, General Town Chief, Barkedu Town, Lofa County

Stephen D. Kollie, stephen.kollie@frontpageafricaonline.com, 0776329124

in Guinea, which is also

experiencing a huge outbreak
of the virus. He died two hours
upon arrival.
Barworsbody was however
brought back to Barkedu by
family members who escorted
it, giving it the cultural and
religious rites according to
custom before being buried by
several men in the town.
His burial marked the beginning
of a major Ebola outbreak in
the Islamic dominant town
of Barkedu,which has a strict
culture of washing the dead to
complete a befitting burial.
Town
Chief
Sesay
told
FrontPage Africa that the failure
of the town to heed the advice of
local health authorities,led them
to losing dozens of their kinsmen
including prominent figures like
their Chief Imam.
Said Sesay: The people advised
us that we should not bathe dead
bodies, but at that time we never
believed that Ebola existed.So
the people went and bathe the
body and those that bathe the
body in three to seven days had
to come together and do other
sacrifices. So from there they had
contacts with each other. Thats
how the Ebola spread here.

Inside another household is oneyear-old Blama Barwor whose

family lost over 26 persons to the
virus including the towns patient
zero, Barwor. They all cared for
him and continued having bodily
contacts with each other. Little
Blama is being care for by his
aunt who was among few of the
towns Ebola survivors. For him,
he did not get infected with the
virus, even though his mother
and father tested positive and
died of the disease.
Children lost
Sitting at the front of a little
shop, 32 year-old Fatu Kanneh,
is frustrated. She lost three of her
four children and her husband to
Ebola.
She told FrontPage Africa that
she continued sleeping with her
husband and caring for him,
even when he was showing signs
and symptoms of the virus. The
husband died one week after his
illness, leaving one of their sons
critically ill.
Kanneh said her husbands
illness began with severe fever,
headache and later diarrhea. She
bought him anti-malaria pills,
anti diarrheal and other drugs but

the symptoms increased.

Seven days later, her husband
died and another son became
ill. Men in the town buried the
husband and nearly everyone
who took part in the burial
ceremony got infected.
Fatu did not get Ebola even
though her husband died of the
disease along with her three
children. But she said 33 of her
husbands family members were
wiped away by the virus, leaving
her with only an 18 year-old son.
She said she was very dependent
on her husband for survival,
but now shes worried how life
will be in the coming days, as
getting food has become a major
problem for her.
They depend on farmland
cultivation to get food but the
outbreak of the virus put a halt to
all farming activities in the area.
Its not easy to live without my
husband. We did not make any
farm this year, so I dont know
how we will be eating here. For
now, we live on begging our
neighbors, she says.
Despite the demise of his father,
brothers and a sister, 18-year
old Musa Barwor is keeping
courage and hopes to return to
school soon. Barwor hopes to

become a virologist with specific

emphasis in infectious disease
she said. Barely seven months
into the combat against Ebola,
vigorous precautionary measures
have been put in place by
authorities in the town to prevent
the virus from spreading.
Mandatory precaution
Visitors are forced to stop at a
special checkpoint to wash their
hands with chlorinated water
before entering the town.
Every household is mandated
to keep a hand-washing bucket
at their doorstep, while all
burials are swiftly referred to
health authorities. No stranger is
allowed to sleep in the town.
A 28-man contact tracing team
and active case finders, move
from door to door everyday
searching for the sick or anyone
showing signs and symptoms of
the virus.
In one instance, the General
town chief explained that he
personally intervened for the
removal of strangers who had
come to Barkedu from an
unknown town in Guinea to
visit their relatives, even though
Liberian borders are close.

Barkedu has over 7,000 residents

with a small clinic that allows
10patients to receive treatment a
day. Shortage of essential drugs
is the order of the day. It takes
days and sometimes months for
the only health facility to receive
supplies from government. Due
to this, citizens are forced to
travel to Voinjama City for nearly
an hour to seek medication.
Water problem
Water and sanitation is a major
problem in the town, with just
3 active hand pumps in use and
no public latrinesleaving many
persons to use the bushes for
toilet.
Only 27 persons survived from
the virus in Barkedu, which
killed over 150 persons, making
it the highest Ebola death ever
reported in a single town in Lofa
County. Thousands of people
have died from the deadly Ebola
virus in West Africa and though
cases in Liberia are slowing,
Sierra Leone and Guinea remain
trouble spots.

In keeping with the processes
and procedures of the UCMJ,
a special Disciplinary Board
of the Armed Forces needed to
be set up, further investigation
conducted,
and
findings
presented to the President and
Commander-In-Chief along with
appropriate recommendations.
These processes and procedures
have been concluded and the
results of the investigation by the
Disciplinary Board of the Armed
Forces of Liberia have been
presented to the President.
The
findings
from
the
Disciplinary Board of the
AFL concluded that a Platoon
Commander and four enlisted
men were guilty of indiscretion
and exhibited indiscipline on
August 20, 2014 in the Township
of West Point. Accordingly,
the following sanctions were
imposed on these men:
Lieutenant Aloysius Quaye
Platoon Commander: He was
held responsible for poorly
assessing the situation and
acting contrary to the behavior
expected of a military leader in
the reformed AFL. As a leader
in a situation of crisis, he was
expected to show efficient
command after serving in the
AFL for over five years with
training locally and in foreign
parts. He should have been able
to handle simple crowd control
and dispersal. As a military
leader, he did not follow proper
military procedures in selecting
personnel to fire warning
shots. Although no evidence
was adduced that any of the
personnel of the AFL fired the
fatal shot that killed Shaki
Kamara, the Disciplinary Board
thought it absolutely necessary
to institute punishment for
behavior unbecoming of a
serving personnel of the AFL.
As such, Lieutenant Aloysius
Quaye, Platoon Commander is:
Guilty of violating Article
133 of the UCMJ regarding
the uncecoming conduct of an
officer or gentleman;
Guilty of Article 92-C of the
UCMJ regarding dereliction in
the performance of duty.
The punishment prescribed
under the UCMJ include:
Reduction in rank to the lowest
rank permissible under the
category of the accused;
Two (2) years loss of seniority
with consequential effects;
Thirty (30 days) correctional
custody;
Thirty (30) days detention;
Forfeiture of 2/3 salary for 3
months; and
Letter of Severe Reprimand.
Additionally, the following
enlisted personnel of the AFL
were found guilty of various
offences of the UCMJ. They
include:
Corporal Mulbah Timothy
Violation of Article 128 of the
UCMJ regarding assault and
arbitrary use of force;
Corporal Flomo Anthony

The prescribed punishment for
the four enlisted men include:

The Commander-In-Chief has
directed that all punishments be
carried out in compliance with the
relevant provisions and practices
of the UCMJ.The second Report
from the Independent National
Commission on Human Rights
(INCHR) was presented to the
President of Liberia on October
28, 2014 with the following
recommendations:

(a)That the Government should

improve the living conditions of
its citizens living in West Point.
Reaction: The Government feels
that all slum communities should
be rebuilt and developed with
emphasis on the transformation
of the lives of all citizens.
This objective is part of the
governments
agenda
for
change and is incorporated in its
development agenda.
(b)That
the
Township
Commissioner of West Point be
reassigned.
Reaction: The Government
has instructed the Minister
of Internal Affairs to take the
appropriate action in reassigning
the Township Commissioner;
That
counseling
sessions
by the Government, NGOs,
human rights and civil society
organizations be initiated to help
the youth of urban Liberia to
cope with anger brought on by
frustration, poverty, ignorance
and stigmatization, and while at
it, offer them hope.
Reaction: Like all others this is
an important recommendation

which
requires
collective
attention and support from all
stakeholders. In this regard, the
government pkedfe to continue
to work with all relevant
stakeholders and interested
parties to achieve these ends.
As to the late Shaki Kamara, the
Commission recommends that
the President of Liberia extends
a public apology to the family
and that monetary compensation
be made. The amount to be
determined by the Government
in collaboration with the
Interreligious Council.
Reaction: The Government,
in August, extended heartfelt
condolences to the family of
the late Shaki Kamara, and the
President visited the family
to express deepest sympathy.
The President will continue
to publicly apologize to
Shaki Kamaras family and
all those who were hurt by the
unfortunate occurrences of
August 20, 2014. Consistent
with this recommendation, the
President will invite and work
with the Interreligious Council

to determine the compensation

for the family of Shaki Kamara.
We note sadly, however, that for
this government, no monetary
value will compensate for the
life of a human being, or in this
case, a Liberian citizen. We view
our duty as enabling the lives of
all of our citizens.
As to the recommendation by
the Commission that a health
center be erected in memory of
Shaki Kamara, the Government
will endeavour to renovate and
equip the West Point Community
Clinic to the memory of Shaki.
(e) That Titus Nuah be flown
to Accra, Ghana for further
treatment to be accompanied
by a family member and the
physician who operated on him
at the S.D.A. Cooper Hospital in
Monrovia.
Reaction: The Government
accepts this recommendation
unreservedly and will carry out
its obligation in the coming days.
Also the issue of compensation
will be discussed with the
Interreligious
Council
still
convinced that our valuation of

life is beyond monetary values.

(f) That Sylvester Kromah
who sustained injuries from
barbwires while trying to escape
the shooting be compensated.
Reaction: The
government
is in agreement with this
recommendation and will discuss
with the Interreligious Council
on the form of compensation.
As for Mr. Alfred Nagbe who
was wrongly accused of stealing
a generator, the Commission
recommends that the Liberia
National Police (LNP) render a
public apology to him and that
the government compensate him
with money.
Reaction: This recommendation
is accepted by the government
and the amount to be paid will be
discussed with the Interreligious
Council.
That when the shooters are
identified, they be stripped of
their immunities, if any, and
tried or prosecuted in a Court of
law for their reckless disregard
for Shaki Kamaras right to life
and Titus Nuahs right to a safe
environment and protection of
his person by the Government.
Reaction: To this important end,
the Government of Liberia has
instructed the Ministry of Justice
to invite all witnesses to the
shooting to help in identifying
those who were responsible. The
President has further instructed
that as soon as such persons are
identified, they must be charged
and held accountable before the
laws of the Republic.
The Government extends thanks
and appreciation to all members
of the Disciplinary Board of
the Ministry of Defense, those
of the Independent National
Commission
on
Human
Rights, and all citizens of the
Republic who helped with the
investigations.
Again, to the family of the late
Shaki Kamara, the Government
deeply regrets his loss and
extends publicly to his family its
deepest sympathy.
Also, the Government expresses
regrets to all those who were
wounded in this unfortunate
incident as well as their families.
May the good Lord guide and
protect you all in these difficult
times.

On Tuesday, November 4th,

party leaders whether or not the
elections should be considering
the moral question and the
constitutional concern. Can we
hold elections while people are
dying from Ebola virus? And
what will happen if elections
cannot be held and the tenure
of the senators expired? All
the political parties thanked
LCC for consultation but were

holding of senatorial elections
before the expiry term of the

LIBERIA: LIVING WITH EBOLA

AWARD-WINNING SERIES AFRICA INVESTIGATES BACK ON AL

JAZEERA; STARTS WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 22:30GMT

he second season of
Al Jazeeras awardwinning
Africa
Investigates kicks off
on Wednesday, 12 November
2014, asking whether the
Liberian government is making
the Ebola crisis worse.
This groundbreaking series
gives some of Africas best
journalists the opportunity to
pursue high-level investigative
targets across the continent using their unique perspective
and local knowledge to put
corruption, exploitation and
abuse under the spotlight, says
Al Jazeera Englishs executive

producer Diarmuid Jeffreys, who

adds that the first seasons Spell
of The Albino won a One World
Media Award and was nominated
for a Royal Television Society
Award.
In the first episode of the
second season, Liberia: Living
with Ebola, Sierra Leones
Emmy, BAFTA and Peabody
winner Sorious Samura teams
up with Liberian investigative
journalist Mae Azango, a
winner of International Press
Freedom Awards from both The
Committee to Protect Journalists
and Canadian Journalists for Free
Expression. Working together,

the pair explores the reality

of living through the worlds
deadliest Ebola epidemic, which
has killed nearly 5 000 people in
eight nations.
Sorious and Mae film with a
Red Cross body collection team
who risk their lives travelling
around Monrovia picking up the
dangerously contagious corpses
of the deceased. They also spend
time in an Ebola treatment unit
run by Medecins Sans Frontieres
and follow emergency response
teams working in the Red Light
slum, one of Monrovias poorest
and most densely populated
districts.

Some of these Red Cross

workers are unpaid volunteers,
like Robert. Im doing this to
have this particular sickness
alleviated from my country, he
says. I love my people.
But Sorious and Mae also
encounter deep anger among
Liberian health workers. Most
receive $280 a month for jobs
that bring them into daily,
dangerous contact with Ebola
victims. Many are suspicious
that government corruption
is preventing the distribution
of money donated by the
international community.
This remarkable film gives

a deeply disturbing insight

into what it is like to live in
a society gripped by dread of
contagion and mistrust of the
authorities, a place where noone shakes hands any more,
where a mother will think twice
before picking up a sick child to
give it comfort, says Diarmuid.
But it is also a world in which
ordinary people are making the
most extraordinary sacrifices on
behalf of their community - and
indeed the rest of us. If the fight
against this deadly virus is to
be won, then it is in places like
Liberias slums, the very poorest
and most deprived on earth,

where Ebola must be overcome.

Ebola out of Liberia. This format

will continue as we will build four
more Ebola treatment units and
establish three more mobile labs
by the end of this month. What is
more important is that this ETU
was built by the Armed Forces of
Liberia.
Ambassador Malac said everyone
is making progress in the fight
against Ebola and that the news
has been promising but everybody
should not forget the preventive
measures that led to this point.
We just have to keep doing the
practices that we know will keep
ourselves safe, our families,
community and the county of
Liberia safe. We as the United
States are committed to an
ongoing partnership.
Maj. Gen. Daniel Ziankahn,
AFL Chief of Staff said the day
marks an important milestone in
the combined efforts of the US
Military and the AFL to control
and kick Ebola out of Liberia.
I want to extend my thanks
and appreciation to the US
government, but all this would
not have been possible if we had
not had all of the support from the
government of Liberia. I just want
to extend my thanks to Captain
Darda and his able men, who
worked tirelessly day and night
to make this project a success.
I want to thank Ambassador
Malac for providing the means
and the Minister of Defense and
Vice President for giving the
wheels; and today, we are seeing
a successful end.
Defense
Minister
Brownie
Samukai,
thanked
General
Ziankahn and his men for a job
well done.
We want to thank the US
government for the partnership
and helping us to manage the
virus, but also at the same time,
we build our own system. We
want to extend our appreciation to

the men and women from the US

Military who have come to join us
in these difficult times.
The minister recalled that it was
challenging for residents of the
county, two months ago but things
are different today. We see the
efforts of the Bomi Caucus, the
chiefs and elders for creating
the awareness necessary to stop
this transmission. We want to
assure you that we will continue
to work with you in partnership
with the US government and the
US Military led by Gen. Volesky
to make sure that not only in
Bomi, but also in Cape Mount and
throughout the country.
Assistant Minister of Health,
Tolbert Nyesuah, said Seventeen
ETUs are being constructed across
the country and advised Liberians
not to take the Ebola fight lightly
as international medical teams
herald progress.
The US government spoke of
progress and also cautioned all
of us to be careful of how we
think and believing that we have
already won the war, no! We
have not. But the question is why
built more ETU when the cases
are reducing? There is a Town
in Grand Cape Mount County as
we speak, we are moving cases
from that town into Monrovia. If
ETU was in Grand Cape Mount,
it would make our jobs easier to
deal with. There is another Town
in Rivercess, We had to send two
ambulances over the weekend to
get six cases into Monrovia in the
ETU. As I speak, there are 50100 cases in Monrovia. Unlike
Ebola cases, we were reporting
two months ago. It was 500-600
cases reported daily. The number
of cases is reducing but there
is active transmission going on
across the entire country. No
County is off the hook, as we
speak.

deadly Ebola outbreak is far from
over as new hotspots continue
to emerge across Liberia. In a
statement issued on Monday,
MSF says though the number of
new Ebola cases reported in the
country has declined in recent
weeks, the international aid
response must rapidly adapt to
this new phase of the epidemic in
Liberia, or it risks undermining
the progress made against the
disease.
MSF says unlike in neighbouring
Guinea and Sierra Leone where
cases are on the rise, its teams in
Liberia are witnessing a decline
in the number of Ebola patients
admitted to Ebola Treatment
Units (ETUs) for the first time
since the beginning of the Ebola
epidemic.
At present, MSFs 250-bed
ETU in Monrovia ELWA3 is
treating around 50 patients.
In Foya, northern Liberia, the
number of patients reached
zero on 30 October, with no
confirmed cases since that date,
states MSF.Case numbers could
rise again as they have done in
Guinea where, following two
significant dips in the number
of admissions to MSF facilities,
patient numbers are again
increasing.
The
organization
head
of operations in Liberia
Fasil Tezera, states that the
international response is finally
getting off the ground and
financial support is starting to
flow into the country adding that
huge resources are being put into
constructing large-scale Ebola
isolation centres.
Isolation units in Monrovia and
certain parts of the country now
have adequate capacity and we
must adapt the strategy if we
want to stay ahead of the curve
and beat the epidemic, states
Tezera.Priority should be given
to a more flexible approach that
allows us to respond rapidly
to new outbreaks and get the

MSF SAYS INTL. RESPONSE MUST ADAPT TO

CHANGING EBOLA PATTERN

At present, MSFs 250-bed ETU in Monrovia ELWA3 is treating around 50 patients. In Foya, northern Liberia, the number of patients reached

following two significant dips in the number of admissions to MSF facilities, patient numbers are again increasing. Medicins Sans Frontieres

health Mr. Tolbert Nyenswah

says Liberians must not be
complacent because the disease
is still in the country. The
number of cases are reducing,
but there is active transmission
of the disease going on across
the entire country. No county is
off the hook as we speak, he
says. This is why we need to
intensify our efforts; we need
to galvanize all the resources
from our partners and support
the efforts to building treatment
units in the country and deal with
Ebola once and for all.
Nyenswah said the current
situation in Jenewonde, Grand
Cape Mount County should
serve as a reminder that the war
is not yet won.
Vice President Joseph Boakai
also said Liberia should continue
to follow the safety guidelines

outlined by the World Health

Organization
despite
the
improvements. He said with all
the new ETUs being dedicated,
Liberia is ready to contain
the outbreak. There are still
hotspots and while were doing
our best working, we should be
cautious. At least we should have
them (ETUs) around just in case.
Its a preventive measure; it is a
measure to help us to make sure
we are not taken by surprise.
The MSF in its Monday

should be deployed quickly to
actively investigate hotspots
wherever they occur and mount
a comprehensive response.

engagement by the community,
has led to a steady reduction
of cases across the county.
Trust and understanding by the
community is hugely important
in acceptance of medical
activities

also a critical component of an
Ebola response. The Liberian

running by December 15 of
this year.
Making a presentation before
the Senate Committee, Minister
Sendolo said the contractors
who should been implementing

are closed, and those that are

running turn feverish or vomiting
patients away for fear they have
Ebola according to MSF. The
organization says it is adapting
its response in Monrovia by
carrying out a mass distribution
of anti-malarial prophylaxis/
treatment and opening an Ebola
screening point next to the 200bed government Redemption
Hospital, assisting it to reopen
safely.
Infection control measures
like triage points should be
implemented urgently within
regular health facilities in
order to reduce the spread of
Ebola and stop people dying
from preventable diseases and
unmanaged
complications,
says Dr Heijenberg. Much of
the international aid funding
for the Ebola response is

earmarked for specific projects.

Instead, international donors
and implementing organisations
should deploy their resources
with flexibility so that they can
be used where they are needed
most.
In West Africa, MSF is currently
responding to the Ebola
outbreak in Guinea, Liberia
and Sierra Leone. In Mali, an
MSF team provides technical
support to the Ministry of
Health. MSF currently employs
around 3,300 staff across the
region and operates six Ebola
case management centres and
two transit centres. Since the
beginning of the outbreak, MSF
has admitted more than 5,600
patients and among them more
than 1,500 in ELWA3.

the project have all pulled out

of the country because of the
outbreak. In order to prepare
to start the project, we needed
to start doing the civil works
and in order to do that they
should by now be mobilizing to
do it but because of the health
situation, no mobilization has
taken place.
Minister Sendolo also said the
period used to fight the deadly
Ebola virus will be added on
to the December 15 deadline
and because of that the Mount
Coffee project would not be
completed in the next six to
nine months.
Minister Sendolo said, like the
Mount Coffee Power project,
other projects in the energy
sector have also been halted
because of the epidemic. All
the generation projects were
on course but cannot because
most of our contractors have
pulled out, Sendolo said.
Cross border electrification

The minister disclosed that the

pace of the West African power
pool cross border electrification
is slow and expressed personal
dissatisfaction about the way
it is being done. He however
said it is the way it is because
contractors have pulled out.
I dont care how we put it,
nothing will change if the
contractors dont come back.
They need to mobilize and start
doing the work or stay exactly
to where we are. We need to
change the current situation
from where we are, Sendolo
said.
President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf
last year set December 15 of
this year as a targeted date
to turn on the Mount Coffee
Power Plant that was looted
during the civil war.

Monrovia etter
Future
Foundation, BFF,
has described as
professionally
heartwarming
the
report
of the Special Independent
Investigation
Committee
constituted
by
President
Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, which
had exonerated five Korean
businessmen
arrested
in
Monrovia on 8th, July, 2014,
from
money
laundering,
counterfeiting, and conspiracy
to defraud charges levied
against them by some agents of
the National Security Agency,
NSA.
The Foundation pointed out
that the constitution of the
Committee by the Liberian
Chief Executive and its
subsequent report on this
crucial matter remains vital
to restoring and reassuring
investors protection, trust and
confidence in the country s
justice system
In a release issued in Monrovia
over the weekend, BFF
also expressed delight over
recommendation by the Special
Independent
Investigation
Committee, chaired by the
Dean of the Louis Arthur
Grimes School of Law of the
University of Liberia (UL),
Cllr. David A.B. Jallah, for
the Liberian Government to
refunds the full amount seized
from the Korean businessmen
by the NSA operatives.
The Special Independent
Committee was appointed
by the Liberian leader with
a mandate to investigate
accusations
of
money
laundering,
counterfeiting,
illegal arrest and conspiracy
to defraud, involving some
Korean nationals, a Lebanese

intersection of Benson and

Center Streets in Monrovia for
onward transfer to the hospital.
Gaye was accordingly taken
to the Redemption Hospital
in the Borough of New Kru
Town after members of the
ambulance crew received a call

from Center Street community

informing them that the man
was in poor health condition
and that he could likely die at
any time.
The suspect explained that
he is from Buchanan City,
Grand Bassa County where

he has been living but came to

Monrovia in search of better
living condition, explaining
that he spent most of his time
in the ghetto until he felt sick.
The suspect extended thanks to
the ambulance crew and said
he hopes that he will survive

from whatever disease he is

currently suffering.
Gaye said he has no family
member in Monrovia and that
he has been living on begging
and sleeping in the same lotto
booth since his arrival in
Monrovia about two months
ago.
One of the nurses on
Representative
Josephs
ambulance told journalists that
the suspect was showing Ebola
symptoms like fever, running
stomach and vomiting.
Loren T. Wisseh confirmed that
they were taking patient Gaye

to the Redemption Hospital

in the Borough of New Kru
Town where he will undergo
treatment.
A resident in the community,
James Allison confirmed that
suspect Gaye has for the past
one and a half month been
sleeping in the booth and
usually comes outside to beg
for food or money to sustain
himself but said they got afraid
after noticing that his condition
has deteriorated for the past
two days prompting them to
call the Ambulance.

BFF APPLAUDS JUSTICE FOR KOREANS,

HAILS EJS FOR RESTORING CONFIDENCE

and the National Security

Agency (NSA).
As part of its report, the David
Jallah led Special Independent
Committee recommended to
President Johnson-Sirleaf that
appropriate
administrative
actions be taken against five
operatives of the agency and
two of their co-conspirators
who do not work for the NSA
but were directly involved

with the arrest of the Korean

nationals.
The
Committee
further
recommended that the five
agents be forwarded to the
Ministry of Justice (MOJ), for
prosecution in order to clear the
name and image of the NSA.
BFF, in its release, lauded
the Liberian leader who had
forwarded the Committees
report to the Ministry of Justice

for speedy implementation.

BFF, a nonprofit and civil
society organization, has been
involved with mediation efforts
aimed at amicably resolving
the matter concerning the
seizure of US284, 000 from
five Korean businessmen in
Monrovia allegedly by the
NSA.
BFF, President, Augustine
Arkoi had repeatedly said

prompt mitigation of the matter

by the Government of Liberia
would further contribute to
enhancing
the
people-topeople diplomacy and social
entrepreneurial
relations
involving Liberian and Korean
nationals, retaining investors
confidence and assuring the
predictability of doing business
in Liberia.
The BFF Boss furthered that

non judicial resolution of the

matter would also go a long
way in bolstering not only the
goodwill of Korean nationals
but
other
international
investors as well, who are
looking for opportunities to do
business in various spheres of
the Liberian economy.
BFF, in its communication
reiterated that without fasttracking the recovery of said
amount and other personal
belongings taken from the
Korean businessmen by the
NSA agents, the image of the
Liberian nation risks being
further tainted.
It can be recalled that recently,
five Korean nationals including
Jung Dal Park, Chae Dal
Byoung, Chol Jung Woo, Cha
Kwang Woon and Aleck Gold
were arrested at a local resort at
the Catholic Hospital Junction
in Monrovia by NSA agents.
For nearly two decades now,
BFF has been in the vanguard
promoting Liberia and Korea
relations in the areas of
education, capacity building,
international
volunteerism,
as well as promotion of
socioeconomic,
cultural
understanding and cooperation.
Besides BFF, many other
civil society groups at home
and abroad, including some
members of the diplomatic
community
have
been
concerned about the slow pace
in resolving the matter so as
not to signify a governmental
endorsement of the use of state
apparatus to perpetuate crimes.

More than a million people were
expected in the reunited capital,

ISRAELI POLICE UP ALERT

LEVEL AFTER ARAB PROTESTS

JERUSALEM (AP)
sraeli police went on
heightened alert Sunday
following protests across
the country over the fatal
shooting of a 22-year-old Arab
Israeli who appeared in video
footage to be retreating from
police, as the prime minister
vowed a tough response to any
further unrest.
Thousands of Arabs took to the
streets Saturday to protest the
shooting, with many hurling
rocks and firebombs at police.
The protests continued Sunday
with a general strike called
by Arab Israeli community
leaders and demonstrations
outside universities and other
institutions. The tensions add
to those already raging in
Jerusalem, where Palestinians
from the eastern part of the
city have been clashing almost
daily with police over access to
a disputed holy site.
Police spokesman Micky
Rosenfeld said police have
beefed up security and raised
preparedness to its second
highest level the country's
highest since the conclusion
of this summer's 50-day Gaza
war. The weekend protests
included some marching with
Palestinian flags and calling for
an uprising.
At his weekly Cabinet meeting,

Prime Minister Benjamin

Netanyahu warned against
further violence.
"Israel is a nation of law.
Whoever violates the law will
be punished severely. We will
not tolerate disturbances and
riots," he said. "I have instructed
the Interior Minister to use all
means, including evaluating
the possibility of revoking the

citizenship of those who call

for the destruction of the State
of Israel."
The anger erupted after
an early morning incident
Saturday in the Arab village of
Kfar Kana in northern Israel.
Police said officers opened fire
against a knife-wielding man
attempting to stab policemen.
Video footage later emerged,

apparently taken from a

security camera, showing a
man repeatedly banging on the
window of a police vehicle with
an object in his hand. When
officers emerged to confront
him, he began to backpedal and
was then shot. Police took him
to a hospital where he died.

A Reuters reporter in Potiskum

Boko Haram has intensified
its attacks since the Nigerian

as well as the imminent release
of more than 200 school girls
kidnapped by the group.
Boko Haram's leader denied a

The group whose name means

The Nigeria Police Force

47 people had been killed.
Mariam Ibrahim, a teacher
at the Government Science

Potiskum

A second teacher, asking to

"There are some (others) that

RONALDO:
I'M IN THE
BEST FORM
OF MY LIFE

The Portuguese talked down his recent

achievements by saying his 2014-15
statistics "aren't so bad" and claims he'll
never tire of winning awards

ristiano Ronaldo claims he is in the best form of his life after a blistering start to the season.
The 29-year-old has scored 23 times in 17 games this term as Real Madrid have romped to the
top of La Liga and already reached the last 16 of the Champions League.
Having enjoyed a stellar 2014 - blighted only by a World Cup group stage exit with Portugal
- the Champions League winner and Copa del Rey victor was humble about his record-breaking efforts.
"Perhaps this is the best form Ive ever been in but every year I try to improve on the previous one," he
told reporters as he picked up Marca's Pichichi award for top goalscorer and the Alfredo Di Stefano award
for best player in 2013-14.
"There will come a time when I cannot improve but I will at least be able to step up in terms of my figures.
My statistics, in goals and assists, arent so bad.

"I want to keep learning and working hard in the same way I have been doing up until now."
Ronaldo is favourite to beat the likes of Germany and Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, Argentina
and Barcelona forward Lionel Messi, and Netherlands and Bayern winger Arjen Robben to this year's
Ballon d'Or award in January, which would see him claim the accolade for the third time in his career.
"Winning an award for a second or third time is always good," the Seleccao skipper added. "My objective
is always to win collectively, with the team, but also individually.
"I work very hard to be able to reach the level needed to win every kind of trophy. Playing football is what
I enjoy and I will never tire of winning things."
Ronaldo has been selected in Portugal's squad to face Armenia in Friday's Euro 2016 qualifier before they
clash with Argentina - and Messi - in a friendly at Old Trafford on November 18.
