Mentoring of Girl Students to Compete for

Admission at Premier Engineering Colleges

INTRODUCTION

To address the teaching gap between school education and engineering entrance as also to enrich the
teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics at School level, the CBSE is launching, a project to
provide free online resources to girl students of Class XI and Class XII for preparation of admission test for
the premier engineering colleges in the country.
The special focus of project Udaan is to address the low enrollment ratio of girl students in these prestigious
institutions and to enable girl students to receive special incentives and support so that they can join these
institutions and go on to take leadership roles in the future.

IMPORTANCE OF THE PROJECT

India has made significant progress towards improving access to quality education and in promoting
gender equity. Yet girls are under-represented in good quality institutions of higher education and many
professional courses. Besides this, it is widely recognized that girls from marginal socioeconomic
background are at a double disadvantage due to compounded effect of gender and social influences.
This gender-gap and poor participation of girls and women in socioeconomic activities have negative
repercussions for the development of fastest growing knowledge based economy. In field of science
and technology, girl students are further under represented. Proactive steps, focused approach and
additional measures are needed to promote womens participation in these fields. One of the significant
reasons is resource limitation that leads to preferential expenses on the education of male child.
Closing the gender gap in all
spheres of education is one of the
important benchmarks for development. It is envisaged that Udaan
will help bridge this gap by improving the socioeconomic status of
girls and women through increased
participation in professional education. Girls education does not only
increase their abilities to deal with
the problems of her personal and
professional life, but the educational
achievements of women can have
ripple effects in the societal transformation efforts. Nurturing scientific talent and addressing gender equity is crucial to meeting countrys
sustainable development goals.

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this project is to

enable girl students to soar to higher education from schools, and to eventually take various leadership
roles in future. The project aims at addressing the lower enrollment of girls in engineering colleges.
The aim is also to enrich and enhance teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics at Senior

Secondary level by providing free and online resources to everyone, with a focus on special incentives
and support to 1000 selected girls per year.

SPECIAL FEATURES

Udaan is designed to provide a comprehensive platform to deserving girl students who aspire to pursue
higher education in engineering, and assist them to prepare for the entrance examinations while studying
in Classes XI and XII.

Virtual contact classes
Tablets provided with preloaded content to allow 24x7 learning
Orientation Session on using technology will be given to all selected students
Assessments designed to provide useful feedback on learning and leading to accrual of points
Remedial steps to correct learning
Peer learning and mentoring opportunity for meritorious students leading to accrual of additional points
Points accrued during assessments and mentoring activities to be converted to money used for fees,
if selected in IITs and NITs
Motivation sessions with students/parents
Student help line to clarify doubts, monitor student learning and support technology
Constant monitoring and tracking of student progress with feedback to parents
Assistance in application to colleges

WHAT IT MEANS

In the first year, 1000 girl students from across the country will be selected to join this program. 50%
enrollment will be under the general category and 50% will be from the SC/ST/Backward Class category.
These students will get free of cost support to enable them in preparation for the IIT-JEE entrance examination.

METHODOLOGY

The selected students will have access to an online portal which will be organized on the basis of Class XI
and XII with three subject streams - Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. This portal will have content in
the form of videos, tutorials and text. Concepts will be organized based on the learning taking place in the
classroom as per the syllabus of Class XI and XII. Students will also have the same content available to
them downloaded on a mobile device to allow them to study in an offline format also.
Before embarking on the program, these students will undergo a technology orientation session to make them
technology friendly and get comfortable with using the mobile device and also the online content.
Once logged in, student progress will be monitored and tracked and periodic contact classes will enable face
to face update on the progress made. Assessments will also be built into the learning process and will allow
monitoring of student learning. Students will have interactive groups where they will be able to interact with
their peers and teachers.

A helpline will allow the students to clarify their doubts and concerns at any point and have immediate
assistance available.
Based on the performance of the students in the periodic assessment conducted, they will accrue points
which will be converted into money. This money will be available to the students once they get selected
into a college on the approved list. If a student fails to get admission, the money will be put back into the
general pool to assist other students.

WHO CAN JOIN

The program is open to Indian citizens only. All girl students studying in classes XI and XII in any Board in
India are eligible to apply based on merit criteria given below. The selection of the students will be based
on merit.
Eligibility Criteria Girl students currently enrolled in Class XI and XII in PCM stream
Minimum 70% marks in Class X overall and 80% marks in Science and Mathematics ; for Boards
which follow CGPA, a minimum CGPA of 8 and a GPA of 9 in Science and Mathematics
For Class XII students, a minimum of 75% marks in PCM in Class XI in addition to the Class X
requirements
Selection will be based on merit cum means
Preference will be given to girl students from economically disadvantaged background

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Selection Criteria
1. The program is open for citizens of India residing in India only.
2. The program is open for girl students studying in any recognized Board in India.
3. 1000 girl students enrolled in Class XI and XII in the current session will be selected. 500 girl students
selected will be from Open category and 500 will belong to SC/ST/Backward Class.
4. Preference will be given to girl students from financially weaker section where the combined family
income should be less than INR 600000 per annum for General and Backward Class candidates.
5. The students will be selected based on merit where Class XI students should have secured a minimum

of 70% marks overall and 80% marks in Science and Maths in the Class Xth examination. Where CGPA
is used, the student should have secured a CGPA of 8 and a GPA of 9 in Science and Mathematics
each. For Class XII students, in addition to the Class X criteria, they should have secured a minimum
of 75% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in Class XI.
Course of Study
6. Tablets given to the student will be at the responsibility of the parents. An undertaking from the parents/
guardian will be required prior to the release of the tablet and periodic compliance report will be needed
from the School principal.
7. Students will be required to maintain a 80% attendance at the contact classes. Students who drop
below 80% attendance will lose 50% of all points accrued. Additionally if the attendance drops below
70% at any time, the student will be dropped from the program.
8. Students who drop out for any reason will have to submit the study material and the tablet to the city
coordinator.
9. Students will be required to be present for 80% of the compulsory assessments conducted. Students
who do not take the compulsory assessments will not be eligible to accrue points.
Financial Assistance
10. Students will only be eligible for financial assistance if they get admission into the IIT and NIT Colleges.
Students who are unable to qualify into these colleges will not be eligible for any financial aid irrespective of the points accrued by them and their reward points will be forfeited.
Orientation
11. Students will be required to attend a 2 day orientation program at New Delhi during the 2nd/3rd
week of November 2014. For this the Board will reimburse second class train fare for the students
and one companion and will make arrangements for their two nights stay at Delhi. Students will be
required to reach the designated venue on their own by 10 AM on the designated date (will be inform
separately).
Consent
12. Parents consent is compulsory for admission into this program. A declaration by the parents that they
accept the terms and conditions of the program and are willing to support the student in this effort will
be required along with the registration form.
