Program outline

We will be doing an act with two phases and an awareness programme via speech (in local
language either using a local person) then we will be performing a dance. We plan to conduct a
survey on knowledge, attitude and practice of people regarding women violence and burn
violence using questionnares before the program and then after the program

Phase one
At the start we will brief the audience about the objective behind our initiative. We will
communicate with the audience, if possible in the local language (using a translator or help). We
will use questionnaires to ask about their knowledge and attitude regarding women violence,
especially burn violence to know the actual awareness level.
A girl is working in the fields and she gets attacked by four men, raped and thrown in the fields.
Oppressed by social taboo she doesnt dare to talk about it.
Phase two
The same girl who is victim of rape has to face a marriage which is more of an arrangement for
her family to save face by giving dowry. Her family which is poor find it difficult to marry her
without giving considerable dowry. They face considerable social pressure to get the girl
married. After much struggle the parents are able to manage some fund for the marriage.
The girl enters with a briefcase in the stage and immediately she is surrounded by her husband,
father in law and mother in law. It turns out to be the dowry money her in-laws have asked from
her parents, they take the money. The girl goes back to her work. Unhappy with the amount of
money the girl had brought, her in laws snatch away her jewelries, physically abuse her and push
her out of the house so she can get more money from her parents. The girl goes to her parents,
they understand but they dont have any money, so the mother gives the minimal of jewellery
she is wearing and paperwork of the house. Unhappy and reluctant the girl takes the jewellery
and goes back crying.
The girl reaches her in laws house .They see that she doesnt have the moneys and she is refusing
to give the papers for her parents house they demanded so they again beat her and then pour
kerosene over her and light the matchstick to burn her. The girl struggles to her last minute, runs
around and finally dies. One of their neighbors sees that and calls the police, reaches their house
extinguish the flame, hold the victim. The police arrive and arrest the husband as well as the in
laws...the parents of the girl arrive and cry in front of her body
Then one of Us give an awareness speech (or via non-verbal acts? to be decided after
consultation with our choreographers, probably local language using an interpreter) and then a
dance of 15 people in an empowering song, most likely Akon (Hold my hand), song can be
changed.
Then we give a short demonstration on what to do in conditions which burns occur, first aid and
management of burn injuries, pamphlets will be distributed. The program again ends with

interaction of the team with the locals. In these sessions we also ask locals to share their views
on problems and what could be the solution.
Further, we take a feedback regarding whether they got the idea/message that our act wanted to
convey. We get the concrete evidence of the success of our awareness program via the same
questionnaires with same or different individuals. It will be a documented survey for the future.
