At Friends of Occupy Portland, we equip everyday

people to become engaged, powerful citizens
who impact and influence the communities and the
planet in which they live.
We do so by facilitating communication,

connection,

and

community

between

individuals, various civic initiatives, and grassroots

groups through our three focus areas of activities:
Information & referral

Neighborhood outreach
Education & training
We are uniquely positioned within our

community as one of very few organizations of this

kind that is not tied to any specific political party,
ideological orientation, or issues. Our service is for all
who are interested in civic engagement and
community-building. We simply connect people
together and help them exchange their skills and
knowledge.
Our origin is in the legacy of the Occupy Wall
Street movement and Occupy Portland community, in
which people of all walks came together to parks
and streets for a phenomenal, unprecedented
season of community-building and grassroots
actions in modern history. We are here to strategically
build a long-term support to further develop the

connection and the community.

Friends of Occupy Portland is an Oregon public benefit non-profit

corporation established as a civic and social welfare organization,
to provide logistical support and infrastructure to further the
works and connect community projects started by the Occupy
Portland movement in 2011.

Brief history
The Friends of Occupy Portland (FOOP) was incorporated on
April 19, 2012, originally as a legal entity established to hold
funds and enter into contracts on behalf of the unincorporated,
loosely organized association known as "Occupy Portland," which
in turn was governed at the time by the Spokes Council. As
Occupy Portland became increasingly decentralized and
fragmented, FOOP has taken various roles and evolved into a
more conventional non-profit that operates an information-andreferral service out of a small inner Southeast Portland office
space and goes out to a variety of local festivals to engage
neighbors into conversations and outreach. FOOP is now
governed by a 5-to-10-member board of directors, a group of
individuals with a long, demonstrated history of dedication to the
Occupy movement.

further help connect the diversified communities of people and

activities. We also partner closely with community-based
initiatives and groups such as the Portland Free Store
(http://quatr.us/freestorepdx/), Strike Debt Portland
(https://www.facebook.com/groups/strike.debt.rolling.jubilee.pdx/
), and the 99 Unite Civic Forum
(http://99unitecivicforum.weebly.com), and many others, each of
which remains autonomous and has its own visions, goals,
strategies and set of activities.

NEIGHBORHOOD OUTREACH: Since 2013, we have

conducted a series of outreach activities at many local festivals
throughout Portland each summer, including street fairs, Sunday
Parkways, and in 2014, as far out as Beaverton to the west and
Boring to the east.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: In the coming year, we will

What we do

also create, facilitate and coordinate a wide range of communitybased educational and training programs geared towards
equipping ordinary citizens into influential civic leaders and
effective community organizers. This work was previously
carried on by Occupy Portland based groups such as Our School
PDX, and will complement continuing efforts by Community
Supported Everything and others.

INFORMATION AND REFERRAL: FOOP operates out of a

full-time office space and has an access to adjacent assembly

rooms at St. Francis of Assisi parish center in Southeast
Portlands Buckman area (1131 SE Oak St.). The office primarily
functions as an information and referral center, and we maintain
both telephone- and email-based support (971-258-1006,
occupyportlandinfo@riseup.net), as well as regular visitor
service hours (see occupyportlandcalendar.org for the up-to-date
information). Working closely with the affiliated volunteers, we
also maintain the Occupy Portland websites
(occupyportland.org), online calendar
(occupyportlandcalendar.org) and social media operations to

Our monthly expenses run approximately $600, most of which go

to overheads (rent, regulatory fees, insurance premiums,
communication technologies) and outreach projects and events.
From time to time, we also act as the custodian and processor of
donations directed towards specific community projects
approved by our board of directors, such as the City Hall 24/7
Vigil to End the Camping Ban, Humanity HUB, and a legal defense
fund. We are supported entirely by individual donors and
benefactors. We receive no government or foundation money, so
your support large or small will directly help further our
missions.
