MoTeC News: jeanette.ralston@motec.com.au Tec h Ti ps Suspension Mathematics Anti Roll Bar Forces A very important part of data analysis is understanding the magnitude of the forces that are acting on various parts of the vehicle. The example we will review in this news is Anti Roll Bar forces. As we know, Anti Roll Bars are one device used to control the amount of roll that a vehicle generates while cornering. The amount of vehicle roll is dependent on a number of factors including the vehicles lateral acceleration, centre of gravity, roll centre, track width, spring rates and damper settings. Note: For further information regarding the interrelationships of the above factors, we recommend that you book into the Claude Rouelle Seminar via the MoTeC website. For the purpose of this discussion, we will assume that, for a given car set-up, these factors remain constant during cornering. With this assumption in mind, it can be said that the Roll Angle is proportional to the Lateral Acceleration less the Roll Resistance provided by the Anti Roll Bars. The force of this resistance can be calculated from the logged data, however we need to decide on a point of reference. Due to the leverage effects of the Suspension Motion ratios, the same amount of force will result in different values, relative to the reference point in the system. In this example, we will use the force on the tyres as the reference point. The calculation requires two pieces of information. The amount of twist applied to the Anti Roll Bar (mm), which can be derived from the logged data, and the amount of force required for a given amount of movement (kg/mm). The amount of twist applied to the Anti Roll Bar is simply calculated by subtracting the RF Suspension Position from the LF Suspension Position. As in previous discussions, the Suspension Position is the same as Wheel Position. To calculate the effective rate of the Anti Roll bar, we need to know the Actual Rate of the bar and its Motion Ratio. The actual rate of the bar can be measured by placing a bottle jack on a load cell and raising one side of the bar at its linkage or connection point to the suspension while noting the deflection distance and increase in load. This method will give an actual rate, whereas the following formulae can be used as a reasonable theoretical approximation. A formula to calculate the Anti Roll Bar Rate (suspension) is -
= 793.5 x (Bar OD 4 Bar ID 4 ) / (Bar Length x Lever Length 2 ) = 793.5 x (31.75 4 25.65 4 ) / (914 x 249 2 ) = 8.16 kg/ mm Issue Number 11

To calculate the Anti Roll Bar Rate at the wheel, we need to find the Motion Ratio of the Anti Roll Bar. If the Anti Roll Bar moves 6.3mm and the wheel moves 10mm, then the Motion Ratio = 0.63. The force at the wheel can now be calculated as follows -
Anti Roll Bar Rate (at wheel) = Anti Roll Bar Rate (at suspension) x Motion Ratio 2 = 8.16 x (0.63 2 ) = 3.2 kg/ mm
For the rear suspension with a live axle, the Motion Ratio equals the distance between the roll bar links on the rear axle divided by the Rear track width. The set-up for the Expression Evaluator maths is shown below (left)
The graph (above right) indicates the Lateral G, and the calculated Roll Bar forces as a result of the maths performed.
This calculated data is only as valid as the original assumptions made at the beginning of this example. www.motec.com.au
What s New ? MoTeC Telemetry Monitor 2.10 The latest version of MoTeCs Telemetry Manager features a number of significant enhancements. Telemetry data can now be shared over an existing network with no additional software required other than Telemetry Monitor itself. The PC that is being used to receive data from a vehicle can be configured to act as a network server and transmit information via Ethernet (or even over the internet).
Channel Broadcasting Channel Broadcasting allows a single channel, such as Lap Distance, to be shared with multiple Telemetry Monitors. This is ideal for multi-car teams where several car positions can be displayed on a single track map
Enhancements made to the Warnings system Up to 6 conditions allowed per warning. Each condition is configurable as per ADL Alarms. The message displayed for a warning can be configured. Warnings can be acknowledged and levels incremented by pressing F3. Warnings can also be disabled.
Enhancements made to Dial Gauges Colours can be set for dial face, marker 1 and marker 2. Introduced 'pie' and 'bar' marker styles. When using markers with the 'bar' indicator style, the bar colour changes to match the colour of each marker it passes
Enhancements made to Bar Graphs Colours can be set for marker 1 and marker 2. Bar colour changes to match the colour of each marker it passes.
Enhancements made to Chart Recorder Two new (optional) marker lines added. These marker lines can be positioned anywhere on the vertical axis and be assigned any colour. Vehicle ID and Driver now displayed in the main window caption. Properties menu now available for disabled controls.
