The best onion rings ever
at The Derby Inn
My dining companion and I visited The Derby Inn on a Friday
afternoon to sample what the recently acquired pub had to ofer two
hungry ladies who like to lunch. Having driven past the sign near
the Newlyns roundabout countless times, I was looking forward to
nally sampling what the pub has to ofer. The interior is lovingly
rustic with dark wood furniture, replaces and cosy blankets laid
casually over a few chairs, ready to be snuggled under on a cold
evening (I do love a good scrooch under a blanket with a glass of red).
We were shown to our table by the friendly waitress and presented with
a varied menu of hearty pub classics and more gastro fare, a choice
of sandwiches and specials. To start, Natalie opted for the smoked
salmon with a chive crme frache roulade served with winter vegetable
crisps and a crunchy endive salad; a nice balance of textures with the
soft salmon and crunchy leaves. My tiger prawn skewers were fat and
juicy, no anemic shellsh here! The sweet chilli sauce was a perfect
accompaniment in terms of heat but I would have preferred the sauce
on the side as the accompanying salad leaves were a little soggy. For
the main, I chose the 8oz rump from the specials, which was more than
ample for one and very well seasoned. This was served with double hand-
cooked chips (not quite triple but tasty nonetheless), salad leaves, grilled
tomato and quite possibly THE BEST onion rings I have ever tasted its
the Andwells beer batter informed our waitress. Natalie also ordered
from the specials opting for a tender venison hunch steak with creamy
bacon mash, kale and juniper berry. We were both impressed with the
quality of the ingredients and the artful presentation a fantastic gastro
pub dish. It would be rude to leave without trying at least one of the
tempting desserts on ofer, which was a challenge in itself - there are
some good ones! Finally we agreed on the peanut and honeycomb baked
cheesecake served with praline and honeycomb ice cream and it didnt
disappoint. Even if you feel full (with these portions you probably will),
I urge you to chillax for 5 then order one. A really sensational pudding.
Now Im not much of a beer drinker so I feel I may have cheated
those of you expecting a review of the local Andwell brews on ofer.
From what Ive heard, theyre darn good! Next time Ill be bringing my
husband and dad along so they can get the beers in and do some justice
to the ne selection on ofer. Guess Ill be the designated driver then!
To sum up The Derby Inn: tasty, well-cooked food, impressive portions,
amazing onion rings and puds to die for. If this sounds like your cup of
tea then you should pay them a visit.
Oh and beer. Dont forget the beer.

Meet the Maker:
Jay Arcer Floral Design
WeDDINg AND SPeCIAl eveNT flOrIST, JAy ArCHer,
SHAreS Her lOve fOr flOWerS AND fOlIAge.
Hi Jay, we love your work! How did you get into foristry?
The idea for the business started in 2006 when I was 18, but it wasnt until 2010 that I did my frst wedding. I didnt
really have the confdence to start a business, but during 2011 I made things happen. Ive always loved fowers, it
just took me a while to realise it was what I wanted to do for a living.
What do you like about owning your own business and are there challenges?
I like being self-employed but that is a challenge in itself! I care so much about what I do that it can be hard to
switch off, or ever truly appreciate something Ive created; it can always be better! flowers inspire me and I learn
something new every single day.
I enjoy the process of working wih clients from concept to creation, helping them
realise their vision and saring precious moments wih them.
Describe your style.
english romantic. I prefer to use scented fowers and foliage in my designs like herbs, eucalyptus, scented leaf
pelargoniums, ivy berries and conifer.
Any favourite varieties?
Anything typically english. Im not really a fan of tropical plants so you wont see me using orchids, palms or
structural, corporate looking fowers.
What inspires you?
everything around me! Things I have learnt in life, places Ive been and books Ive read. My imagination.
What makes you different from other forists?
Id like to think everything we do! Clients always
deal with me personally. I visit the venue with
them and offer a complimentary trip to New
Covent garden fower market. I create every
bridal bouquet personally and oversee set up on
the day of the wedding or event. I spend hours
scouring shops looking for unusual props and
vessels for arrangements, as well as using beautiful,
often handmade and hand-died silk or velvet
ribbons to tie my bridal bouquets. We use a lot of
different ingredients with a single arrangement often
containing over 20 varieties of fower and foliage. I
care so much about what I do; it has my name on it.

Caring for your fresh cut Christmas tree
50% of a trees weight is water and cut trees with roots are unlikely to thrive if planted
out, so just enjoy your cut tree by caring for it over Christmas and recycle it afterwards.
When you get home leave your tree in its wrapping and stand it in water in the cool until
youre ready to put it in its stand.
A stand should hold plenty of water (~2pints/inch of stem diameter) and the stem
should be trimmed fat for ftting. (Avoid trimming the sides of the stem to make the
tree ft it if possible, or drilling a hole in the stem it doesnt increase water uptake!)
Fix the tree into its stand and position it in the house before removing its wrapping
its easier that way!
To help keep your tree fresh, stand it away from heat sources (fres, radiators, direct
sunlight etc.) and use low heat bulb sets for decorating. Ideally display the tree in a
room that isnt too warm.
Check the water level in the stand is above the base of the stem daily and always turn
tree lights off when you go out or go to bed.
Happy Christmas from West Green Fruits.

All I want for Christmas are my 2
front teeth!
At Odiham Dental Care we feel that most can achieve an
optimal level of oral health and we are here to help. Here
are a few ways.
An effective and easy way to maintain your oral health is
by seeing a hygienist. Hygienists help keep your teeth and
gums healthy. gums are the foundation of your teeth and
its important to look after them to maintain a healthy
mouth. Odiham Dental Care offers routine hygiene
appointment for 46.
Missing teeth can cause problems with eating and affect
your smile. Dental implants can be used to replace teeth.
They are fxed in place and may avoid the need for
dentures or damaging teeth by placing bridges. Implants
however cannot be placed in everyone and you have to
have a healthy mouth. We work with Martin Murray, who
is an experienced dental surgeon with an MSc in Implant
Dentistry.
November is mouth cancer month. There are over 6500 new cases of mouth cancer
diagnosed each year. At every dental examination we do a mouth cancer screen, however
a self check can also be done. We have a handy leafet on how
to do a self mouth cancer check. Come in to collect one at our
practice or call us and we can post one to you. you may have
received one through your letter box too.
Tooth whitening can be a safe and effective means of improving
your smile. Tooth whitening will not change the colour of existing
fllings or crowns but may help to brighten the colour of your
natural tooth. We offer free whitening consultations so you can
fnd out if it is suitable for you.
