Course Description : This course provides the analytical material covered in Mechanics
of Materials and Engineering of Materials. Experiments involving
tension test, verification of stress-strain diagram, ultimate
strength, torsion test, determination of Modulus of shear,
displacement tests of beam determination of Modulus of elasticity

of beam, material sample preparation, heat treatment, and
observation of material structure.


Course Objectives : At the end of the course the students should be able to:
1. Perform, relate and apply the principles and theory of
analytical material covered in the Mechanics of Material and
Engineering of Materials.
2. Demonstrate the testing techniques and laboratory practice.
3. Develop the sound attitudes and procedures in conducting and
reporting experimental works.

Transferrable Skills : Students works in group on various experiments related to
Engineering Materials and Mechanics of Materials. Students will
be learning on testing techniques and will also be exposed on
safety issues.

Draw stress-strain diagram and identify the mechanical properties of different
materials.
CO2 Explain the twisting motion and solve the shear modulus.

Analyze the deflection behavior with concentrated load for different parameters and
critical buckling loads for column with support.
CO4 Identify and analyse the mechanical properties related with hardness and impact test.
CO5 Analyze combined axial and circumferential stress.

Understand the steps of sample preparation for microstructure analysis, to observe
and identify the grain and grain boundary.
