November Parent Cafe

Thursday, November 13th from 2:30 ! 3:30 p.m. in Matsukawa
Place, will be our next Parent Cafe. The topic will be Writing
and Your Child. Please bring a photo or picture of a place you
would like to visit or of your favorite vacation spot. We will be
doing a simple writing exercise using the photo. You can write in
the language with which you are most comfortable; it does not
have to be in English. Then we will also look at the writing
continuum that is used for marking where students are. Please
join us for some refreshments and sharing on how to help your
child with writing.

Student/Parent/Teacher
October 30, 31 and November 3 were the Student/Parent/Teacher
conferences. It was wonderful to see the many parents interacting
with their child in the classroom as well as in the cafeteria over
games. This year was the rst time we tried o#ering various
optional activities. It seems many of the students enjoyed the
opportunities. We would appreciate your feedback about the
optional activities. Please email me at jhino@caj.or.jp. If your
child participated, I would like to know: What did they enjoy?
What were challenges or misunderstandings about the activities?
Any suggestions as we think about next year and what we might
o#er?

Vocabulary
Development
Many of the teachers have been
doing a book study on
vocabulary development. If you
walk around the elementary
hallway, you will see many
examples of how the teachers are
helping students develop their
vocabulary. And if you listen
closely you might even hear the
rst graders saying how
delectable their lunch was. I
talked about vocabulary
development at the September
Cafe and the importance of
parents support at home in
helping to expand your childs
vocabulary. Some things you can
do:
Ask your child what new word
they heard at school
Try to nd interesting words as
you read together
Talk about words as they read
Play word games
READ, READ, READ
