1. Waspmote
Waspmote is a sensor device developers oriented. It works with diferent communicaction protocols
(ZigBee, Bluetooth and GPRS) and frequencies (2.4GHz, 868MHz, 900MHz) and create links up to 12Km.
Using the hibernate low power mode (0.06uA) it can save battery energy when not transmitting and be
able to work even for years. Waspmote is compatible with more than 50 sensors and its open source IDE
makes really easy to start working with it.

Waspmote
1.1. New Waspmote released in 2013
Introduction
The frst version of Waspmote (v1.1) was released in 2009. Since then more than 2000 developers have
been using the platform, posting suggestions and informing of possible improvements in our forum.
We have carefully listened to all of them and modifed both the Waspmote API and Hardware in order
to include all these improvements and suggestions. The result was launched in February 2013 with the
name of Waspmote PRO (v.1.2).
In this catalogue you can see all the characteristics and prices for Waspmote v1.2 or PRO. In short,

Hardware Changes
New Frequency Clock: 8 MHz 14MHz.
USB port at 115200 bps. It is faster to upload code now (x2 or x3 quicker).
New accelerometer higher range (8g).
All the jumpers have been removed. There is no risk of broken jumpers.
The coin battery is removed. Now RTC is always powered by the main battery, with much bigger load.
Added a unique Serial Number ID chip on each board. This ID can be used to diferentiate natively
each of the nodes. This value can be read with an API function.
The battery socket position has changed, in Waspmote PRO it is close to the solar panel socket. Now
it is easier to connect the battery and there is no risk of broken battery cables.
The solar panel socket orientation has changed, in Waspmote PRO it is horizontal. Now it is easier to
connect the solar panel cable too.
The hibernate jumper has been removed, in Waspmote PRO there is a manual switch to enable the
hibernate mode.
Added the SPI port connection in one of the sensor sockets.
Added specifc default sockets for basic sensors: temperature, humidity and light sensor (luminosity
LDR). No need of using a Sensor Board to integrate those sensors.
Waspmote PRO can be programmed with the XBee connected. This reduces the process of uploading
code and avoids the risk of broken sockets.
The XBee RSSI indicator leds have been removed. The RSSI signal can be read now with an API function.
A new interrupt is added, XBee can wake Waspmote PRO up when using the XBee cyclic sleep mode.
That is great to enable advanced sleep strategies.

Sensor Boards Compatibility
During 2012, Libelium has launched new versions for the Sensor Boards. We can call them v2.0 in order
to distingish them. They do not have critical changes, just minor modifcations, as you can see on their
Guides. All of the v2.0 Sensor Boards are retro-compatible with Waspmote v1.1, but the old Sensor
Boards are not fully compatible with Waspmote v1.2. Take a look:

Software system
Not just the hardware, but also the software has been modifed, according to Waspmote developers
advice. Libelium software engineers have worked really hard there. In fact, it has been the biggest efort.
The new API is more robust and easier to use. Besides, long-term tests have been run to ensure high

Programming environment:
Programming with Waspmote has a fast learning curve. The programming language used is C++,
widely known by developers of embedded devices. In addition, Waspmote ofers an Open Source API to
program using high level functions without having to deal with hardware-specifc commands.

Expansion Radio Board
The Expansion Board allows to connect two radios at the same time. This means a lot of diferent combinations are
now possible using any of the ten radios available for Waspmote: 802.15.4, ZigBee, Bluetooth, RFID, RFID/NFC, WiFi,
GSM/GPRS, 3G/GPRS, 868 MHz and 900 MHz.

1.6. Extracting the data
The last point for confguring a sensor network is to decide the manner in which to access the data. With
Waspmote, there are 3 alternatives:
Waspmote Gateway connected by USB to a computer. This is recommended for applications of few
nodes that are indoors or for testing while confguring the network. The Waspmote Gateway is also
used to send commands to the sensor network, thus at least one unit should be purchased with the
the frst kit of Waspmotes.
Waspmote GPRS/ GSM. This option can be used in small networks placed in difcult access locations,
when using a single point of data collection alone or in combination with the other two options,
using the GPRS radio only to send SMS alert messages.
Meshlium. This is the most recommended option for outdoor networks since it is encased in a
rugged, waterproof enclosure which protects it from the harshest conditions. It can receive, parse
and store frames in its local database. Meshlium can also forward sensor data directly to the Internet
via Ethernet, Wi-Fi or 3G/GPRS protocols, depending on the connectivity options available in the
area.

2. Meshlium
Meshlium is a Linux mesh router that can integrate 5 diferent communication interfaces: Wif 2.4GHz,
Wif 5GHz, 3G/GPRS, Bluetooth and ZigBee. In addition, Meshlium may include a GPS module for mobile
or vehicular applications and use solar or battery power. These features, along with its robust IP65
enclosure allows Meshlium to be installed anywhere.
The new Meshlium Xtreme allows to detect iPhone and Android devices and in general any device
which works with Wif or Bluetooth interfaces. The idea is to be able to measure the amount of people
and cars which are present in a certain point at a specifc time, allowing the study of the evolution of the
trafc congestion of pedestrians and vehicles.

Confguration software:
Meshlium includes a management software (Manager System) to confgure through a GUI all the
parameters of its communication interfaces (WiFi, ZigBee, 3G/GPRS and Bluetooth) and manage the
storage of sensor data received. It also allows to load factory settings to make installation easier. Its
operating system is Linux and the confguration software is open source:
