MANUAL FOR THESIS

Title

The title should be typed in uppercase and lowercase letters

It should centered between the left and right margins, and positioned in the upper half of
the page.

The words method and results do not normally appear in a title, nor should such terms as
A Study of or An Experimental Investigation of.

Avoid using abbreviations in a title

The recommended length for a title is no more than 12 words.

Author's name (byline)

First name, middle initial (s), and last name e.g., Juanita A. Smith

Institutional affiliation

The institutional affiliation should be centered under the author's name, on the next line
e.g.,
John O. Foster II and Roy R. Davis Jr.
Educational Testing Service, Princeton, New Jersey

Running head

An abbreviated title that is printed at the top of the pages of an article to identify the
article for readers.

It should be a maximum of 50 characters, including letters, punctuation, and spaces


between words.

It should appear flush left in all uppercase letters at the top of the title page and all
subsequent pages

Abstract

Use the past tense to describe specific variables manipulated or outcomes measured

Word limits range of abstract is 150 to 250 words.

The heading of Abstract should appear in uppercase and lowercase letters, centered, at
the top of the page no 2.

It should be a single paragraph without paragraph indentation

Key Words

Keywords used to enter databases and registries

Each student chooses keywords for categorization: one to five terms of one to thr
ee words is the range of common practice.

It should be double spaced in manuscript after abstract, used times roman typeface and
one inch margins.

Introduction

Begin the introduction on a new page, identifying it with the running head and the page
number 3.

Type the title in uppercase and lowercase letters centered at the top of the page, and then
type the text.

The other sections of the article follow each other without a break; do not start a new
page when a new heading occurs.

Remaining manuscript page should also carry the running head and a page number.

Consider using appendices and a supplemental website for more detailed information

Appendices

If your manuscript has only one appendix, label it Appendix

If it has more than one appendix, label each one with a capital letter (Appendix A,
Appendix B, etc.)

Each appendix must have a title to refer that in text by its label.

Begin each appendix on a separate page

Center the word Appendix and the identifying capital letters in sequence at the top of the
page.

Center the title of the appendix, and use uppercase and lowercase letters.

Begin the text of the appendix flush left, followed by indented paragraphs.

Typeface

Times New Roman, with 12-point font size

A sans serif type (such as Arial) may be used in figures and tables.

Line spacing

Double-space between all text lines of the manuscript

Double-space after every line in the title, headings, footnotes, quotations, references, and
figure captions.

You can apply triple- or quadruple-spacing in special circumstances, such as immediately


before and after a displayed equation

Never use single-spacing or one-and-a-half spacing except in tables or figures.

Margins

1 inch margin at the top, bottom, left, and right of every page

Line length

The length of each typed line is a maximum of 6and half inch

do not use the word-processing feature that adjusts spacing between words to make all
lines the same length

Alignment

Do not justify the right margin (do not make the right margin even); for text use flush left

Do not divide words at the end of a line (do not use hyphenation)

Paragraphs and indentation

Indent the first line of every paragraph and the first line of every footnote.

Use the tab key, which should be set at five to seven spaces, or 1/2 inch.

Use left-hand margin for remaining lines of the manuscript.

Exceptions are (a) the abstract, (b) block quotations, (c) titles and headings, (d) table
titles and notes, and (e) figure captions.

A paragraph should not be longer than one manuscript page

Order of manuscript pages

Title page which includes title, running head, author byline, institutional affiliation, and
author note (numbered page 1_

Abstract (start on separate page, numbered page 2)

Text (start o n a separate page, numbered page 3)

References (start on a separate page)

Tables (start each on a separate page)

Figures (start each on a separate page; include caption on page with figure)

Appendices (start each on a separate page)

There are five levels of heading in APA. It describes headings, subheadings, and subsubheadings as levels 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5.
