DIFFERENCES BETWEEN LIKE AND AS

Like
We use it when the second term of the comparison is a noun, a gerund or a pronoun.
Dave looks like his father. - Don't act like me !
Like can be modified with adverbs , such as : just, more, very much, not at all... :
Just like you, Jane wanted to be a doctor.
We can also use like (or such as) when giving eamples:
He prefers classical composers, like Chopin.
he prefers !rench actors, such as Delon.

AS
We use it when the second term of the comparison is a verb, a clause or a preposition.
Don't do as " do !
"t started rainin#, as " said it would.

!s can be used before a noun:
he works as a nurse.

"e careful :
he speaks like a teacher ...she is not a teacher.
he speaks as a teacher ...she is a teacher.

AS IF
#n $nglish we also use as if to make comparisons. %owever it has a few distinct
characteristics to its use:
&he verb after !' #( is always in the past subjunctive, no matter what tense the
sentence is.
#f the verb "$ directly follows !' #(, we use were for all personal pronouns.
He looks as if he knew the answer. (&he verbs L))*' indicates this sentence is in the
present + but the verb after !' #( + knew , is in the past subjuntive).
he walks as if she were a supermodel. (&he verb after !' #( + be + has been changed
to were and not was).
He boarded the airplane as if he were a seasoned traveller.
He spends money as if he owned a bank.

We also use like - noun or pronoun or as if/ as though - clauses with some verbs:
feel, look, sound, smell, seem, treat
