caughttheworldbysurpriseandsetoafrenziedinterna-
tionaldebateaboutwhyexactlythepoperesigned,whythe
VaticanandevenBenedictsclosestaideswerelefinthe
darkabouttheimpendingresignation,andwhothenext
popewillbe.
TeTrumpetdoesnthavespecicanswerstothese
questions.Wecan,howeverthankstowhatthe
ApostlePetertermedthemoresurewordofproph-
ecysetthepopesresignationinabroadercontext.
Herearetwokeyexpectationsfromthenextpopeand
fromtheVaticanintheweeksandmonthsahead.
First,expectthenextpopetobeconservative,and
probably even moreconservative,thanPopeBene-
dict xvi.
UnderBenedict,theVaticanexperiencedarenais-
sanceofCatholictraditionandconservatism.Benedicts
Vatican,asmanyhavenoted,hasaspecialaectionfor
medievaldoctrineandpractices,andhasemergedas
perhapsthemostnotabledefenderoftradition,includ-
ingmarriageonlyoccurringbetweenamanandwoman.
Together,BenedictandtheVaticanhavewagedwaronmoral
relativism,compromiseandsecularism.Nothingwillchange
underthenextadministration.Infact,thenextpopemaybeeven
moreconservative,andforcefulinhisimplementationofCatholic
doctrineandtradition.

Givenallthis,theresagreatdealofconcernthat,asone
seniorU.S.ocialtoldtheNew York Times,theNorth
Koreansaretestingfortwocountries.
InJanuary,KimJong-unboastedthatthe UnitedStates
wastheprimetargetforPyongyangsnuclearandmis-
siletests.Earlierthismonth,IransSupremeLeaderAli
Khameneirejectedtheideaofnuclearnegotiationswiththe
UnitedStates.So,neitherNorthKoreanorIranbelievethe
WhiteHousecandomuchtostoptheirmarchonethat
theyseemtobeconductinginlockstep.
Someofushavebeensayingthisissomethingtoworry
aboutforveorsixyears,saidHenrySokolski,executive
directoroftheNonproliferationPolicyEducationCenterin
Washington,u.c.TeNorthKoreanshavebeencooperat-
ingwithIranforaboutadecadeonnuclearandmissileis-
sues,andtheIranianshaveseveralfull-timeweaponsengi-
neersonsiteinNorthKorea.NeithertheNorthKoreansor
theIranianshavemadeasecretofthis.TeIranianswere
reportedatNorthKoreaslastnucleartestaswell.Itshard

SomeexpertssuspectthatifthebombdetonatedTues-
daywasusingenricheduranium,thisisyetanotherpiece
ofevidencethatIranislikelyusingNorthKoreaasaback-
