I really want to go 80 yards, honestly, Wallace said. But you take them any way you can. Wallace sure has been getting touch- downs in different ways so far this season, and hes been getting them on a consistent basis. By scoring five touchdowns in the first seven games, Wallace already matched his total for all of 2013. He is well on his way to becoming the first Dolphins player to reach double digits in receiving touchdowns since 2005 when wide receiver Chris Chambers finished with 11 on his way to the Pro Bowl. After scoring against Chicago, Wallace had touchdowns in six of the Dolphins last seven regular season games dating back to last season, the best stretch for a Miami receiver since Mark Clayton did it all the way back in 1984. Wallace, who is on pace to beat his career high of 10 touchdowns in 2010 as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers, says the key to his early success is simple. Work, man, Wallace said. Youve just keep working. Ive known Ryan (Tannehill) for like a year and a half now. Naturally, over time youll know how your quarterback wants to play and how the wide receiver wants to play. Just practicing every single day, just working hard at it, things will pay off. Youve just got to stay consistent with working. Wallace has scored one touchdown in every game this season except for the home loss against the Kansas City Chiefs and against the Jacksonville Jaguars last Sunday, and just about every single one of them has been memorable. In the opener against the New England Patriots, he beat Darrelle Revis in single cover- age in the end zone and caught the ball after it was deflected and bounced off his knee. Against Buffalo in Week 2, he made a spectacular one-handed catch in the corner of the end zone on a back-shoulder throw. Against the Raiders in London, he caught a quick pass at the line of scrimmage and bulled his way into the end zone after being met by a couple of Oakland defenders around the 2-yard line. Finally, there was his touchdown at Soldier Field where his in-and-out route in the back of the end zone drew praise from both offensive coordinator Bill Lazor and Tannehill. I wouldnt say Im looking for him more, Tannehill said. Hes doing a good job. Hes making plays down in the red zone. Its an area where hes picked his game up a lot. Hes running good routes. The route in the back of the end zone (against Chicago), great route. He ran prob- ably one of the best routes Ive seen him run and (I was) able to throw the ball out there and he made a great catch. You just see him getting more and more comfort- able and playing with confidence and get- ting open. Thats what you want to see from your receivers. Given Wallaces history of long recep- tions, its borderline shocking that his five touchdowns this season have covered 14, 7, 13, 5 and 10 yards. But its also showing that Wallace is more than just a receiver who can get open deep. Not that Wallace ever wants to be con- sidered a possession receiver. Not really, but I want to be an all-around receiver, so thats part of it, Wallace said. I enjoy those, too. But if you really want to know, I want go to 80 yards honestly. But Ill take them all, any way we can get them. Touchdowns dont come easy. But its not all about touchdowns for Wallace, who leads the team with 32 recep- tions through the first seven games and has See WALLACE, page 14 12 | FINSIDERS PLAYBOOK 11,12,13,14-WALLACE FEATURE 10/27/14 5:18 PM Page 2 Mike Wallace is on pace to do something no Dolphins player has accomplished in almost a decade. Head Coach Joe Philbin has said on numerous occasions the improved produc- tivity is due in part to Wallace being more comfortable in his second season in Miami. The biggest thing Ive noticed is just his work ethic around here, his comfortability around here, Philbin said. I just think he feels better about being a Miami Dolphin. I know that sounds crazy, but I think thats translated and helped him on the field. Again, who knows what the future holds, but I like the way hes contributing. I like the energy that hes bringing. Hes been running hard in practice and working on the timing with everybody, with the whole passing game. I cant really pinpoint one thing necessarily other than I just like the way hes going about his business more. I think all that stuff, at the end of the day, it counts for something. In many ways, it has been a great start to the season for Wallace. The only thing that was missing in the first six games was the long ball. But Wallace, whose longest gain in the first six games was a 30-yarder against Kansas City, broke through in that depart- ment against Jacksonville with a 50-yard reception in the third quarter. The catch, the key play in a 91-yard touchdown drive, was the 16th of 50 yards or more for Wallace since he entered the NFL as a third-round pick in 2009. Wallace had made clear his wishes before the Jacksonville game. Weve got to go up top, Wallace said. Were doing a great job running the ball, were doing a great job in the intermediate pass game and short pass game. Weve got to take that next step. Weve got to be able to take the top off the covers. We have the guys to do it. I know we have the guys to do it. Youve got to score those long touchdowns. Asked about the long ball before the Jacksonville game, Philbin said simply: Its coming, its coming. Even before it did come, Wallace had found a way to make an impact. Not that it was anything he hadnt planned on. Wallace said after last season he should have had 20 touchdowns and set high goals coming in this year. Yeah, I was at like 20, 25 again, Wallace said. Every year (the goal) is going to be 25 until I get that or I retire. Youve got to come in with your expectations high. Who comes in with expectations of five touchdowns? I hope nobody. My hopes and my dreams is always to break a record, but weve got to work to get there. Its not going to come easy. If you dont get there, its fine. But youve always got to strive to be the best. I still think I should have had 20 touch- downs last year. Its just about hitting them. Weve just been completing them instead of not completing them. Its just working, just continue to get better with our quarterback every single day, not taking any days off. Itll pay off for you every week. WALLACE, from page 12 My hopes and my dreams is always to break a record, but weve got to work to get there. Its not going to come easy. If you dont get there, its fine. Five-time Chargers Pro Bowl quarterback Philip Rivers has never thrown more than one touchdown pass in any of his four career meetings against the Dolphins. Only three of the past eight meetings were decided by less than 10 points, with the Dolphins winning all three (23-21 in 2005, 17-10 in 2008 and 20-16 last season). The Dolphins have had nine different players with 100-yard receiving games against San Diego: Tony Nathan, Jim Mandich, Keith Jackson, Duriel Harris, Mark Duper, Mark Clayton, Chris Chambers, James McKnight and Howard Twilley. Ryan Tannehills 268 passing yards in last years game represented the highest regular season total against the Chargers for any Dolphins quarterback other than Dan Marino. 19-GAME PLAN - QUICK HITTERS 10/27/14 5:16 PM Page 1 20 | FINSIDERS PLAYBOOK GAME PLAN CONNECTIONS | TODAYS MATCHUP | LAST TIME Dolphins head strength and conditioning coach Darren Krein was a fifth-round pick of the San Diego Chargers in 1994 after starring at the University of Miami. Chargers running back Ronnie Brown was selected by the Dolphins with the second overall pick in the 2005 NFL draft and played in Miami from 2005-10. Chargers practice squad defensive tackle Chas Alecxih was a member of the Dolphins practice in 2012. Chargers cornerback Richard Marshall played for the Dolphins during the 2012 season. CHARGERS | 23 GAME PLAN TODAYS MATCHUP | LAST TIME By ALAIN POUPART @apoupartFins Dolphins fans no doubt remember the January 1982 playoff classic that once was named the greatest NFL game of all time. It also happened to be the last time the San Diego Chargers won a game in Miami. The Dolphins have won the teams last seven meetings in Miami, including playoff victories following the 1982 and 1992 sea- sons. The Dolphins also beat the Chargers at home in 1988, 1999, 2002, 2008 and 2013, and will look to make it eight in a row today against a San Diego team reeling a bit after a 5-1 start. Banged up at running back and in the sec- ondary, the Chargers come to Sun Life Stadium following losses against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 7 and against Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos in a Thursday night game in Week 8. The Chargers still represent a formidable opponent, largely because of the presence of quarterback Philip Rivers. During San Diegos five-game winning streak, which began with a victory against the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks, Rivers compiled a passer rating of 123 or better for five con- secutive weeks. While second-year wide receiver Keenan Allen leads the team in receptions, tight end Antonio Gates continues to loom large in the San Diego passing game. He comes to Sun Life Stadium with a streak of four consecutive games with at least one touchdown and six scores during that span. In the running game, the Chargers seem- ingly have found a hidden gem in undrafted rookie Branden Oliver, a 5-foot-7 back who has brought about comparisons to Darren Sproles and Maurice Jones-Drew. Oliver has been sprung into action because of injuries to Danny Woodhead (on injured reserve), Ryan Matthews and Donald Brown. The strength of the Chargers defense might well be its secondary, led by Pro Bowl safety Eric Weddle, but cornerback Brandon Flowers missed the Denver game because of a concussion and promising rookie corner Jason Verrett sat out the second half after aggravating a shoulder injury. Two of the big names in the front seven are longtime Indianapolis Colts pass-rushing specialist Dwight Freeney and former first- round pick Corey Liuget, a defensive end who played at Hialeah High School. Dolphins going for great eight Former Hialeah High standout Corey Liuget is one of the Chargers top defensive players. 23-TODAY'S MATCHUP 10/27/14 5:15 PM Page 1 22-GULFSTREAM 10/6/14 3:37 PM Page 1 DOLPHINS VS. CHARGERS | 25 GAME PLAN LAST TIME Tight end Charles Clays spectacular 39- yard touchdown reception gave the Dolphins a 17-10 lead in the third quarter and the defense made the lead hold up. The Dolphins clinched the victory when Brent Grimes knocked down Philip Rivers pass for Vincent Brown in the end zone on the final play. Grimes also stopped San Diegos opening drive with an interception. The Chargers needed a touchdown on their final drive because on their next-to- last possession Olivier Vernon sacked Rivers on third down to knock San Diego out of field goal range. Both teams had success rushing the ball, with the Dolphins averaging 5.5 yards per carry and San Diego averaging 5.9. What did Reshad Jones do right during his suspension to be able to quickly acclimate himself back to the team? He came back in really good shape. I guess we were a little bit fortunate we had a couple of days of practice in that bye week to kind of assess where he was at, but his movement skill was very good really from the day he got back, so I think he took very good care of his body. There wasnt a lot of muscle sore- ness. It wasnt like he hadnt worked out and was all of a sudden doing change-of-direction drills and all of a sudden he is tight in his hips or his hamstrings or what have you. I think he just did a lot of the right things physi- cally taking care of his body, and I do think maybe the bye week was a little bit of an advantage for him. Q. Does Koa Misi look like a middle linebacker out there for the long term? He does. He looks like a football player to me. When its all said and done, the guy plays fast. Hes tough. I think Ive told you guys before, when we do our cut- ups at the end of the year for the funda- mentals and everything, Misi is on a lot of those cut-ups. (I was) asked a couple of weeks ago, what do you want the defense to stand for? Pursuit and tackling and cre- ating turnovers and getting off of blocks, and a lot of those pictures show Koa Misi. I think hes a good football player. Well see. He has to earn it. I think hes making progress. Q. What is Ryan Tannehills upside? That is the fun part of coaching and play- ing, we still think that there is a lot of room for development and we have seen devel- opment and we want to see continued development. He has got a strong arm, hes a good athlete, hes a very hard worker, hes very diligent in his preparation. Hes kind of a gym rat, he is here all the time and its important to him. When something is impor- tant to someone and they have good physi- cal skill, then there is room and a chance for someone to develop. Head Coach Joe Philbin Safety Reshad Jones came back from his suspension in great shape, and that has paid off in the form of some big plays. 28,29-PHILBIN COLUMN 10/27/14 5:17 PM Page 1 Q. What place does the read option have in the offense at this point? Its a part of the offense. Its something that can be a positive thing. Its not rocket science. Its not the magic pill, but its something that weve utilized game by game based on how our opponents line up and how we anticipate them playing that particular scheme. One week could be emphasized more than anoth- er. Some weeks may not be, but I think it is something defenses have to spend some time on tape to demonstrate the ability to at times run it effectively. I think thats going to devote some practice time to it. Q. What is your philosophy on playing rookie offensive linemen? When I was the offensive line coach in 06 (with Green Bay), I think we had 38 starts out of rookies when I was an offensive line coach, which I think is the highest, you can go back and check, but its about as high as there is. I personally dont have any hesita- tion. Ive done it before. I would do it again. Q. What was your reaction to seeing Ryan Tannehill carry defenders attempting to tackle him on his long run against Chicago? I loved that. I thought it was great. I think he, after contact, got contact after 12 yards. I think he was smart. He had good ball security at that point in time and was able to drag guys. Those types of runs, we showed the whole team just the running backs, the tight ends and the wide receivers, when you break tackles or carry guys 5, 6, 7, 8 extra yards, I think its a momentum- building for the whole team. Q. Has Samson Satele exceeded expec- tations since the team picked him up, especially with moving Mike Pouncey to guard)? I dont know if it was part of the plan, but I dont know that it wasnt part of the plan. I think you just deal with things day-to-day and you learn more about a player. We certainly didnt know a lot about him. Hes come here, we like the way he goes about his business in the building. We like the way hes performed on the field. Hes a good guy in the locker room. Weve just kind of taken it one day at a time and hes done a nice job so far. Q. Are the safeties interchangeable on where they line up? They both have good size (Louis Delmas and Reshad Jones). Its not like one safety is that much bigger than the other. Various teams across the league have different body types and they have similar body types. They both have good movement skills. They have good coverage skills. It gives us some flexibility in terms of who you want to bring down and on what occasion and for what purpose. Philbin joined Miami after serving as the offensive coor- dinator with the Green Bay Packers from 2007-2011. During that era, his offense ranked in the top 10 in points scored and total yards every season. In five seasons at the helm of the Packers prolific offense, the team scored 2,263 points (third in the NFL during that span). In 2011, the Packers set franchise records for victories (15), points (560) and total yards (6,357). The 560 points ranked second in NFL history. In 2008-09, the Packers became the first team in league annals to have a 4,000-yard passer (Aaron Rodgers), a 1,200-yard rusher (Ryan Grant) and two 1,000-yard receivers (Greg Jennings, Donald Driver) in con- secutive seasons. Philbin joined the Packers in 2003 as an assistant offensive line coach. He served as the tight ends/assistant offensive line coach from 2004-05 and offensive line coach in 2006. Background: Philbin played one year at Washington & Jefferson, where he earned his degree in soci- ology. He has coached collegiately at Tulane (1984-85), Worcester Polytechnic Institute (1986-87), Allegheny (1990-93), Ohio (1994), Northeastern (1995-96), Harvard (1997-98) and Iowa (1999-2002). 32 | FINSIDERS PLAYBOOK GAME DAY COACHING STAFF | 2014 MIAMI DOLPHINS | DOLPHINS ROSTER | DEPTH Joe Philbin Head Coach Blue Adams Assistant Defensive Backs Lou Anarumo Defensive Backs John Benton Offensive Line Jack Bicknell Jr. Assistant Offensive Line Charlie Bullen Assistant Defensive Line Jeff Burris Defensive Assistant David Corrao Assistant Linebackers Kevin Coyle Defensive Coordinator 32,33-COACHING STAFF 10/27/14 5:15 PM Page 1 DOLPHINS VS. It was a heck of a team they had. I mean, you look at the guys on that offense they had with Dan Fouts, I think Chuck Muncie was on that team; obviously Kellen Winslow, Charlie Joiner were still on that team and Wes Chandler. They were loaded and they jumped us pretty good, going up 24-0. Then all of a sudden we started to come back. Probably the biggest play was one of the most amazing plays in the history of the game. The little hook-and-lateral. It was Don Strock who threw to Duriel Harris, who lateraled it off to Tony Nathan. Nathan crossed the goal line with the ball held up above his head. I was on the sideline sucking oxygen and I did- nt see it. I just heard the crowd erupt as we were walking in at halftime and I asked, What hap- pened? They told me and I couldnt believe it. I didnt see it until I saw the replay. It was pretty amaz- ing. That was one of those times where I remember walking into the locker room and nobody wanted to stay in there. We wanted to get right back out on the field and play because we knew we had momentum on our side. I dont think anyone knew it was going to turn into the epic battle that it turned into and go as long as it did that evening. It was a horrible ending because we had the chance to win it with field goals two different times. Winslow blocked one and Uwe von Schamann missed one. To come back in a fashion like that from that far down in a game of that magnitude and to have the opportunity to win it and lose it really hurt. Guys were so physically and emotionally exhausted that I think we were pretty much numb until the next morning. First of all, you realized that you lost and second after a little while you realized that, hey, at least we dont have to go to 25 below in Cincinnati the next week. The crowd was incredible. There were a lot of games that certainly qualified as just crazy games in the Orange Bowl. Two games stick out to me for the voracity of the fans, and it would be that Chargers game, certainly in the second half and in overtime, and the Chicago Bears game in 1985. Those are two games where that old building, you could almost feel the rivets popping out of the ironwork there because it was stressed to the seams. To this day when I talk to guys in San Diego, thats the only game they bring up. My response is, Was there another game of any significance that you guys have ever played in? Because this seems to be the only one you ever talk about. THIS ISSUE: KIM BOKAMPER on Miamis famous 41-38 overtime loss in the 1981 AFC Divisional Playoff Game against the San Diego Chargers at the Orange Bowl. 62-FINSIDERS FOCUS 10/27/14 5:25 PM Page 1 22-BONEFISH GRILL 8/21/14 7:51 PM Page 1 64,65-MARVEL PAGES-clay-grimes 10/27/14 5:30 PM Page 1 64,65-MARVEL PAGES-clay-grimes 10/27/14 5:30 PM Page 2 66 | FINSIDERS PLAYBOOK HALLOWEEN EDITION By MICHAEL FARNHAM All-time favorite Halloween candy Trick or treat? This is your 37th year as a football coach. Do you remember your mind-set when you first decided to give this pro- fession a try? KC: Yeah, I do. I knew from an early age, actually in high school, that if I could have an impact on young people it would be a great profession. I love football. Have always loved football since I played it as a 7-year-old. I was excited about my early opportunities to coach. My original plan was to just be a high school coach, but I only spent one year in high school. After that it was to college and then the pros. 2. What is it about coaching defense that you like? KC: I love the strategy. I love the com- petitiveness. I love the fact that you have to have that win every play mentality. You have to be on point. You have to be disci- plined. There are 11 guys that have to be in sync. There is a bond and brotherhood that we talk to our players about that you have to have as a group. Its exciting. Its very, very challenging. But its very rewarding in a lot of respects. 3. You are not the most intimidating- looking man, kind of like the opposite of Rob Ryan. You could probably pass more for a professor than a coach. How tough can you be if the situation calls for it? KC: I dont know if Im the best judge of that. I think the players will tell you that Im a very demanding guy. I have high expectations and we set very high standards here. I hold our players to those standards. I like to have fun. I enjoy being with the players. But when the time is needed to set the tone and to make sure they know whats expected, theyll tell you thats certainly the case with me. 4. Tell us what the chess match is like on a Sunday afternoon matching strate- gies with the opposing offensive coordi- nator and calling defensive plays in a matter of seconds? KC: Its one of those things I enjoy, yet Im not so sure the average fan realizes how stressful and gut-wrenching it is. Not only are you trying to make calls based on down and distance, but you are trying to determine who the opponent has in the game as they are substituting. Its a split-second decision. You have to have things well thought out. Its a lot of back and forth, trying to break tendencies. At the end of the game, I feel spent because its a very, very stressful afternoon. 5. What is Kevin Coyle like off the field? Your interests? KC: I love my wife and daughter and love to spend time with them. My daughter is a senior at George Washington University. I like to travel to a number of different places. I play a little bit of golf in the offseason when I have a chance. But really Im more of a homebody type of guy. I do like to exercise and love the outdoors. 6. You have coached some great defensive players over the years. How prominent a place does Cameron Wake have on that list? KC: Cameron is right at the top of the list. He is a very rare player with his skill set, his passion, his unique speed and strength for a guy who isnt overly imposing. He has such explosiveness. Hes such an impactful guy. Its a pleasure to coach him and its a pleasure to see the smile on his face because he gives great effort in everything he does. 7. The NFL keeps implementing rules that make life easier for the offense. Does this drive you bonkers as a defen- sive coordinator? KC: The rules are what they are. You have to play within the rules. You have to adjust. At times it makes the jobs difficult for the guys in coverage. We have found a way to 10 QUESTIONS WITH DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR KEVIN COYLE 70 | FINSIDERS PLAYBOOK 70,71-TEN QUESTIONS 10/27/14 5:28 PM Page 1 work through it. I give them a lot of credit because its a very challenging situation when you are out there covering these wide receivers. You are restricted in what you can do. 8. You have two of the smallest starting cornerbacks in the league in Brent Grimes and Cortland Finnegan. You can measure height, but how do you measure heart? KC: You cant measure heart. Those two guys epitomize what toughness, tenacity and determination are all about. They are guys that came into this league with a little bit of a chip on their shoul- der. They fought their way through, but never forgot where they came from. They are a pleasure to be around. When you look at them walking through the door, you would never take them for being football players. Yet when you see them out on the field, and the things they do physically, its really an incredible statement about who they are. 9. Whats the one thing you want people to know about Kevin Coyle? KC: That I believe in what were doing here. I know we have a long way to go, but everything is in place to achieve what we want. We are doing everything we possibly can and Im doing everything I possibly can to get our players in position to play championship defense. 10. Steelers defensive coordina- tor Dick LeBeau recently turned 77 years old. When do you want this train ride to stop, and what are you going to do when it does? KC: Actually, I worked with Coach LeBeau in Cincinnati for two years. Hes one of my great mentors. Ive got to be honest with you, I dont think Ill challenge his longevity record. I love what I do. I still have a passion for it each and every day. It keeps me young and I love every day of it. But I also look forward to the day when I can catch up with some things with my wife we have never had a chance to do because of the sacrifices you make as a coach. Maybe someday Ill get a chance to enjoy these games as a fan. In that historic season, he became the first quarterback to throw for more than 5,000 yards and 40 touchdowns while leading the Dolphins to the AFC championship and a berth in Super Bowl XIX. He ushered in the wide-open passing attack now used throughout the NFL, unveiling a high-octane offense that Brett Favre, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees and others would soon emulate. Below are some of the highlights of Marinos magical 1984 campaign. 1) Sept. 2, 1984 at Washington On opening day against the Washington Redskins at RFK Stadium, Marino throws for five TDs to begin his assault on the NFL record book. The Marks Brothers, Mark Duper (2) and Mark Clayton (1) caught three of those TD passes as the Dolphins over- whelmed the Skins 35-17 in an offensive display that would set the stage for what was to come that season. 2) Dec. 2, 1984 vs. Raiders Marino throws his 37th touchdown pass, a 4-yard TD toss to Jimmy Cefalo in the first quarter, to break the NFL record for most touchdown passes in a season, which had been held by Y.A. Tittle and George Blanda. Marino threw three more touchdown passes that game, with the last one his 40th TD pass of the season, becoming the first NFL player to reach that milestone. 82,83-HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS 10/27/14 5:31 PM Page 1 N DOLPHINS VS. CHARGERS | 83 By HARVEY GREENE 3) Dec. 17, 1984 vs. Dallas In the season finale against the Cowboys, Marino finishes the year with 5,084 yards and 48 touch- down passes, the most prolific sea- son by a quarterback in NFL histo- ry. In addition to his touchdown figure, he also becomes the first QB in NFL history to pass for more than 5,000 yards. Marinos historic accomplishments propels the Dolphins to a 14-2 mark for the year, the best record in the AFC. 5) Jan. 20, 1985 vs. San Francisco (Palo Alto, CA) In Super Bowl XIX, Marino passes for 318 yards and a touchdown, becoming only the fourth quarter- back in Super Bowl history to pass for 300 yards, but the Dolphins fall to the 49ers. Marino would lead the Dolphins to two more AFC Championship Games in his career, but this was his only Super Bowl appearance. 4) Jan. 6, 1985 vs. Pittsburgh In another brilliant performance, Marino leads the Dolphins to victo- ry in the AFC Championship Game and a berth in Super Bowl XIX by defeating the Steelers 45-28. Playing against the team for which he rooted growing up, he throws for 421 yards and four touchdowns, both AFC Championship Game records. 82,83-HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS 10/27/14 5:31 PM Page 2 72-LYNX AD 9/15/14 3:16 PM Page 1 85-PUBLIX AD 10/27/14 5:31 PM Page 1 MY GENERATION THIS WEEK: LINEBACKERS 1. Who is the toughest player you have faced? Id say (RB Shane) Vereen and (TE Rob) Gronkowski of the Patriots. Both of those guys are tough. Gronkowski is a large body and is very smart and knows how to use his body. Vereen is just real quick, real savvy, and then theyve got a great quarterback that can get it to them. 2. Who sets the bar at your posi- tion? I definitely look up to guys like 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis and Panthers linebacker (Luke) Kuechly. Former Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis was someone that I admired as well. They all have their own type of talent. I think they are all just athletic and smart. They know whats going on at all times. 3. What player did you admire grow- ing up? Growing up in D.C. and watching the Redskins, Sean Taylor and LaVar Arrington were guys I definitely looked up to. Taylor was just a knocker, a playmaker. He played with energy and passion. He had the whole city jumping. 4. What has been the most memorable moment of your career? Itd probably be just that first game of the season by getting thrown into the fire and coming out with a victory against the Patriots. Then last year against the Patriots, that second game where we won at home, that was pretty fun, too. It being a last-sec- ond-type win, the last drive, the interception by Michael Thomas, those are some memo- rable moments. 5. What coach had the biggest influence on your playing career? I have a couple. Coach Charlie Strong, whos at Texas now, was my first defensive coordinator, my first linebacker coach at the University of Florida. He kind of showed me the ropes. Also Will Muschamp coming in as the head coach my third year, teaching us all that pro-style defense. I think the terms and the strategy that they use on the pro level really prepared me for the NFL. I would say that those are definitely two guys who shaped my career for the good reasons. 86 | FINSIDERS PLAYBOOK CURRENT PLAYER: JELANI JENKINS 86,87-MY GENERATION 10/27/14 5:39 PM Page 1 1. Who was the toughest player you faced? Earl Campbell was so powerful and very hard to tackle at the point of contact. He always picked up yards after contact. 2. Who set the bar at your position? Jack Lambert played with so much pas- sion and playing with injuries was the norm for him. 3. What player did you admire growing up? Quarterback Johnny Unitas, linebacker Ray Nitschke and fullback Jimmy Taylor were the players I would play as a kid in backyard football games. 4. What was the most memorable moment of your career? The 1982 AFC Championship Game vs. New York Jets. I had three interceptions with one for a TD. I had several big plays during the game, which we won 140. This sent us to my first Super Bowl. 5. What coach had the biggest influence on your playing career? Craig Randall was my position coach at LSU. He basically toughened me up as a freshman to become a starter in the SEC and helped me progress over the next four sea- sons and the end result was being a first- round draft pick of my beloved Miami Dolphins. No, the 1984 Miami Dolphins did not win a Super Bowl. They got there; just didnt win it. But in the history of this franchise there may never have been a more exciting team. If you werent around then, you missed some- thing truly extraordinary. If you were fortunate enough, as I was, to see this magical season play out, your memory is filled with enough big plays, enough scintillating moments, to fill several highlight reels. Many of the NFL records set by those 1984 Dolphins have long since been broken. Were in a new era now, a passing era. But back then, back 30 years ago, what Dan Marino and this offense accomplished was truly something to behold. It was a season I wish I could freeze in time, a season where every Sunday left your heart beating a little bit faster, a season where Marino reached a level that no quarterback had ever reached before. You may know all about the records. You may know that Marino threw for 48 touch- downs and 5,084 yards. You may know about the Marks Brothers and the Killer Bs and how together they carved out a 14-2 season, only to see it end in disappointment against San Francisco in the Super Bowl. But to truly understand what that season was about, youve got to understand what the players were about. It always has to start with Marino. Ive told this story before but it bears telling again. It was the season opener at Washington. Back then, they let the writers on the field for pre- game warmups. It was about two hours before kickoff and Marino walked onto the field by himself, wearing his football pants and a short-sleeve shirt. The stands were still almost empty when Marino walked up beside me, gazed out to the rich green field and whispered, so only I could hear it, I think Ill throw five today. And you know what? Marino threw five touchdown passes and the Dolphins opened that season with a 35-17 victory over the Redskins. Incredible stuff. Ill never forget the moment. But thats what Marino was all about. So brash. So sure of himself. So confi- dent, even before the season opener, of what he and that offense could accomplish. That season was a smorgasbord of big plays. The Dolphins won their first 11 games before losing in San Diego. They put up more points than any Dolphins team in history. As magnificent as Marino was, almost equally impressive were the Marks Brothers. As con- fident as Marino was, almost as confident were Mark Clayton and Mark Duper. I remember so many times how Clayton and Duper would sit beside one another in the locker room, playfully arguing who was going to have a bigger game that Sunday. This is my week, Clayton said, loud enough for half the locker room to hear him. Wait and see, Duper said with that warm, kind smile. I bought Danny lunch yes- terday. I know hes going to look my way. The statistics said that Marino looked both of their ways. Clayton caught 73 passes that season; Duper caught 71. But they werent alone; there were so many remark- able parts to an offense that scored at least 30 points in eight of the 16 games. Revisiting a very special team 90,91-LAST WORD 10/27/14 5:25 PM Page 1 There was Nat Moore, so versatile in the slot, and there was Tony Nathan coming out of the backfield for 61 catches. There were tight ends Bruce Hardy and Joe Rose and running back Woody Bennett. There was an offensive line that protected Marino like he was a piece of gold, which he was. They were Marinos guys. All of them. And each of them knew it. The final regular season game that season was a Monday night game against the Dallas Cowboys. The old rickety Orange Bowl was electric that night. I remember Clayton need- ed three touchdown catches to break the sin- gle-season record at that time. So typical of everything that season, Clayton got his record and in heart-thumping fashion got it on the game-winning score in the fourth quarter. Im not sure the Dolphins will ever see an offense like that one again. I know Peyton Manning and Tom Brady and Drew Brees have since come along and put up gaudy passing numbers that left Marinos 1984 sea- son as more of an afterthought. But for those who were there, for those who were fortunate enough to follow that wonderful journey, 1984 will always remain special. Thirty years? What a wonderful ride that was. DOLPHINS VS. CHARGERS | 91 Dan Marino was in store for another memorable performance when he ran onto the field at the Orange Bowl before the start of the 1984 AFC Championship Game. 90,91-LAST WORD 10/27/14 5:25 PM Page 2 92-MARVEL PAGE-cheer 10/27/14 5:29 PM Page 1 INSIDE COVERS 10/27/14 5:33 PM Page 1 FRONT AND BACK COVER 10/27/14 5:33 PM Page 1
