DISCUSSION
A Bunsen burner, named after Robert Bunsen is a common apparatus used in scienti
fic experiments. It is typically made up of straight metal tube with small holes
at the bottom part where air enters and mixes with the gas to produce an intens
ely hot flame and rubber tubing connected to gas nozzles which happen to be link
ed in a central gas source. Its purpose is for heating, sterilization and combus
tion.
II. MATERIALS
Bunsen Burner
Liquefied Petroleum Gas
Copper wire
III. OBJECTIVES
1. For us to know and recognize different parts of the burner so that we can avo
id emergencies.
2. To identify how to adjust the flame because some experiments need low, mid an
d high heat.
3. To classify which part of the flame is the hottest and coolest
IV. A. Set up the burner.
B. Turn the main gas on. Make sure that the regulator is also on. In Batangas St
ate University Chemical Laboratory 2, the bulb should be in parallel.
C. Bunsen burner has rubber tubing attached to it. The other end of the rubber t
ubing needs to be firmly attached to the gas tap.
D. Once you have made sure that the rubber tubing is correctly connected to the
gas tap you should check that its air holes. If you need to open the holes, just
rotate the metal collar and vice versa to close it.
E. Check the rubber tubing before lighting. It should be distant from the metal
tube for it may cause explosion.
E. You can use matchsticks to light the burner. Make sure to strike it away from
you.
F. Turn off the gas tap, regulator and the main gas after performing an experime
nt.
V. When the air holes is closed, the burner produces yellowish flame while bl
uish flame happen to be produced when the air holes is open. The color differenc
es are due to the oxygen supply for the flame.
When you open the valve then you increase the amount of complete combustion taki
ng place because there is more oxygen available. Complete combustion gives a blu
e flame rather than a yellow flame,
Since when the air holes are open gives a complete combustion resulting to a hig
her temperature of the flame, it is better to use bluish one for it may heat fas
ter than then yellowish one.
To make our mind up, a Bunsen burner is a laboratory instrument that can be used
in heating. Be extra careful in setting up the burner to prevent accidents. The
flame produced changes due to the oxygen supply that can be adjusted using the
air holes and metal collar. The hottest part of the flame is top and the bottom
as the coolest.
