HEAD SCRATCHER!
BCSP No. 5 SOUTH CAROLINA STATE - Everyone knew the South Carolina State vs.
Bethune-Cookman showdown in Orangeburg (S.C.) Saturday was the game of the week, but no one
could guess it would end like this. Quarterback Adrian Kollock entered the game in the fnal minute
and threw a 49-yard TD pass to Austin Smith with 33 seconds lef to give the the Bulldogs (5-3, 3-1
MEAC) an improbable 20-14 win over Bethune-Cookman (6-2, 3-1) .
SC State surrendered an early touchdown but stifed the Wildcats thereafer. SCSU scored on
a 44-yard second-quarter interception return by LB Justin Hughes and a 91-yard third quarter punt
return by DB/KR Antonio Hamilton to lead 14-7 with less than a minute to play. With the ball inside
its 10-yard line, rookie SCSU QB Calvin Giles-McRay, attempting to kneel down, incredulously tripped
over his own center and fumbled. B-CU LB Donald Smith scooped it up and scored from the 3. With
the PAT, the Wildcats tied the score at 14 with 50 seconds lef.
For some reason, B-CU then tried an onside kick that was recovered by SC State at the B-CU
49. Kollock came of the bench and lofed a perfect pass, his only play of the day, that hit Smith in stride
for the winning score setting of pandemonium at Oliver Dawson Stadium. B-CU got the ball back on
the ensuing kickof with 33 seconds lef and got of three plays before a sack of QB Quentin Williams
ended the game at the Wildcat 20.
SCSU defensive lineman Javon Hargrave had 11 solo tackles and six sacks.
