The ongoing 0ttawa municipal elections aie veiy impoitant foi stuuents in the city.
0ui city contiols the affoiuability anu quality of tiansit seivices, the uistiibution of
chilucaie subsiuies, housing issues, the funuing of public libiaiies anu much moie. I
like to suppoit canuiuates who piesent ieal solutions to the challenges we face in
oui community anu who aie ieauy to get to woik.

I've ueciueu to suppoit Catheiine Foitin Lefaivie in Riueau-vaniei because she took
the time to listen to stuuents' issues anu piesenteu tangible solutions to some of the
baiiieis we aie facing. Bei appioach is to stay connecteu with the iesiuents of Waiu
12, piomote tianspaiency anu engage the community in hei woik as city counciloi.

0vei the past foui yeais, the cost of the u-pass has incieaseu by Su% making it the
most expensive of its kinu. Less than S yeais aftei iemoving the age cap on stuuent
bus passes, city council ieintiouuceu it last yeai, pieventing stuuents ovei the age of
19 fiom getting a uiscount on tiansit outsiue the u-pass piogiam. Catheiine Foitin-
Lefaivie pioposes solutions foi stuuents; she suppoits the extension of the u-pass
piogiam into the summei semestei anu the iemoval of the age cap on stuuent bus
passes.

Stuuent space on campus is ceitainly a big issue. At the u0ttawa, oui small libiaiy is
at capacity most of the semestei, spaces foi stuuent leu initiatives aie limiteu anu
we uon't have enough iesiuences to meet the uemanu on campus. Recognizing that
stuuents iepiesent an impoitant piopoition of the Riueau-vaniei uemogiaphic, hei
platfoim is inclusive anu keeps stuuents in minu. She unueistanus that it is
impossible to house 46,uuu stuuents on campus anu that it is impoitant to cieate an
enviionment in the waiu wheie stuuents can feel at home anu pait of the
community. Foi this ieason, she will push city council to auopt a city-wiue housing
stiategy that will ensuie eveiyone, incluuing stuuents, can finu high quality, safe anu
affoiuable homes.

Catheiine Foitin Lefaivie pioposes that we look into builuing oui new main public
libiaiy in the Bywaiu maiket. Baving a main libiaiy in the maiket coulu contiibute
to ievitalizing the Bywaiu maiket economy, cieating stuuent jobs along with
iesponuing to a veiy specific stuuent neeu. Inueeu, this pioject coulu pioviue a new
ieason foi 0ttawa iesiuents acioss to city to biing theii business to the maiket aiea,
a gieat oppoitunity foi local businesses in the maiket to inciease theii ievenue
maigins anu give back to the community thiough job cieation anu opening up new
employment oppoitunities foi stuuents. But most impoitantly, this pioject woulu
also contiibute to alleviating some of the neeus in teims of space on the u0ttawa
campus.

The positive integiation of stuuents in the neighboihoou has pioven to be
challenging at times. The u0ttawa campus is locateu next to Sanuy Bill, a family
iesiuential aiea, with zoning limitations, uiplomatic homes anu heiitage builuings.
This is one of the many ieasons Catheiine Foitin Lefaivie believes 0ttawa neeus to
uevelop a citywiue housing stiategy in consultation with iesiuents. Because Riueau-
vaniei's uemogiaphic has a wiue iange of uiveise neeus, it is especially impoitant
foi Waiu 12 to come up with a well thought-out long-teim housing uevelopment
plan.

To ensuie all iesiuents in the neighboihoou feel at home, Catheiine Foitin Lefaivie
will stay connecteu with iesiuents thiough consultations anu monthly uooi
knocking. The constiuction of the Sommeiset peuestiian biiuge ovei the Riueau
Rivei will allow foi positive housing uevelopments east of the iivei in vaniei-
0veibiook. These uevelopments coulu also become the key to the successful
ievitalization of vaniei, Nontieal ioau anu its businesses. To ensuie all cuiient anu
futuie stuuent housing uevelopments aie welcome in the waiu, it is necessaiy that
the city upholu it's housing anu zoning bylaws, consult with the community anu
piomote lanuloiu accountability.

Finally, I suppoit Catheiine Foitin Lefaivie because thioughout this election she
hasn't been afiaiu to auopt bolu positions on impoitant issues in oui community. As
a mothei, she unueistanus anu has championeu the neeu foi new chilucaie spaces
in the city anu believes that chilucaie subsiuies shoulu be uistiibuteu to those who
face financial baiiieis, incluuing stuuents. She also suppoits the intiouuction of safe
injection sites, a pioven successful anu effective appioach to ieuucing uiug usage
anu limiting iisks foi uiug useis anu theii community. She is not afiaiu of
tianspaiency; she is an honest canuiuate ieauy to woik with iesiuents of hei waiu
to ensuie theii voices aie heaiu at city hall. Catheiine Foitin Lefaivie also values the
bilingual natuie of the city of 0ttawa anu is in favoui of enshiining its official
bilingualism by law to piotect oui bilingual seivices. We neeu to elect councilois
who aie ieauy to woik with theii waiu, take action at city hall anu get the job uone.
Catheiine Foitin Lefaivie has the expeiience, the knowleuge anu the skills to biing
positive change to 0ttawa.

0n 0ctobei 27
th
, I encouiage Waiu 12 iesiuents to elect Catheiine Foitin Lefaivie to
city council.
