PSYT-2345 Principles of Behavior


Management and Modification

COURSE DESCRIPTION
An analysis of behavior management and cognitive theories and techniques with
emphasis on their applications.
COURSE TYPE

COURSE GOALS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES
End-of-Course Outcomes: Apply behavioral management and cognitive theories to
formulate various behavior management plans; and utilize behavioral techniques and
strategies.
Learning outcomes are linked to SCANS requirements. Specific SCANS requirements
are linked to the class schedule.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the definition and theoretical history of
behavior therapy and cognitive theories by
a. defining assigned terms related to behavior therapy (1a, 1b, 2c);
b. writing behavioral management plan (1a, 1b, 2c);
c. identifying effective therapy techniques (1a, 1b, 2c);
d. explaining the treatment process based on experiments in behavior
therapy research (1a, 1b, 2a, 2c);
e. applying ethical principles to use of behavior therapy (1a, 1b, 1c, 2c);
f. explaining Ellis ABC theory (1a, 1b, 2c);
g. describing learning, heredity, and biology as related to behavior therapy
(1a, 1b, 2c);
h. defining target behaviors and maintaining conditions (1a, 1b, 2c).
2. Demonstrate an understanding of positive and negative reinforcement and
methods of administration of behavioral reinforcers by
a. identifying positive and negative reinforcers (1a, 1b, 2c);
b. describing methods for reinforcing behaviors to decelerate other behaviors
(1a, 1b, 2a, 2c);
c. describing methods of identifying reinforcers (1a, 1b, 2a, 2c);
d. defining prompting and stimulus control (1a, 1b, 2a, 2c);
e. describing case studies in behavior therapy research (1a, 1b, 2c).

3. Demonstrate an understanding of cognitive behavioral therapy and behavior
management by
a. defining prompting and stimulus control (1a, 1b, 2c);
b. differentiating characteristics of behavioral assessment (1a, 1b, 2c);
c. producing a behavioral management program (1a, 1b, 2a, 2c);
d. describing a cognitive behavioral program (1a, 1b, 2a, 2c);
e. describing learning, heredity, and biology related to behavior therapy (1a,
1b, 2a, 2c).
COURSE ASSESSMENT
Student success is measured by a variety of assessment techniques aligned with
course goals and learning outcomes. Individual faculty members are responsible for
designing evaluation instruments to measure student mastery of course goals and
learning outcomes and indicating the nature of such evaluation instruments in the
instructors class requirements.
