ThepurposeofthePCSenegalAgroforestryprogramistopromoteagroforestryasameanstoincreaseagricultural
productionandgenerateincome.Tothiseffect,volunteersfocuson:

multipurposetreespeciesthatenhancesoilfertility,reducesoilerosion,protectfieldsagainstanimals,provide
forestproductstothefarmand
fruittreepropagationandorchardmanagementtoproducequalityfruit(mainlymango,citrusandcashews)tobe
soldinlocalmarketsorconsumedbyfamiliesimprovingtheirdietespeciallyduringthehungryseason.

AsanAgroforestryextensionagentyourmainrolewillbetoassistlocalfarmerstoacquirethetechnicalskillsthey
needtoestablishtheirowntreenurseriesandoutplanttheseedlingsproduced.Tothisend,youandyour
counterpartwillorganizeformaltrainings,oneononeinstructionanddemonstrationsforotherfarmers.

Asextensionagents,agricultureVolunteerspromotethetransferofappropriateskillsandtechnologythrough
demonstration,whilelivinginthevillageswithvillagersandspeakingthelocallanguagesofthefarmers.Emphasisis
placedonqualitativeratherthanquantitativeresults,meaningyouwillbeworkingwithfewervillagesthanpast
generationsofVolunteers.Thisemphasisreducestravelandenhancesyourabilitytogettoknowafewcommunities
verywell.

PeaceCorpsSustainableAgricultureVolunteersareassignedprimarilytotheAgricultureDivisionwithinSenegal's
MinistryofAgriculture.AsamemberofaPeaceCorpsprojectteam,youwillberesponsible,alongwithyourhost
countryandVolunteercounterparts,forparticipatingactivelyinthecreationofworkplansforyourzoneandfor
yourself,monitoringandexpandingtheworkofpreviousVolunteers,andmaintainingadocumentationsystemfor
yourzonethatincludesreports,baselineinformation,andotherdocuments.

Youwillberequiredtoattendmonthlyplanningmeetingswiththeothervolunteersinyourzoneandtoworkinclose
collaborationwithyourcolleagues.

PeaceCorps/Senegal'sprogramphilosophyisbasedonanapproachwhichemphasizesdemonstration,extension,and
theexchangeofideas.Dependingoftheecologyandfarmingsystemofyourareaofassignment,youcanexpecttobe
workingonmanyofthefollowingactivities:

Increasingvillagelevelfieldcrop,riceandvegetableproductionbypromotingtheusageofappropriate,improved
varietyseedandtheirassociatedagriculturalpractices.

Protectingvillagelevelfieldcrop,riceandvegetableproductionareasfrominsectandpestdamage,throughthe
promotionofsustainableagriculturalmeans,suchasIntegratedPestManagement.

Increasingsoilfertilitythroughthepromotionofsustainableorganicmeans,suchascomposting.

Protectingthecropproductionareasfromanimalandwinddamagethroughthepromotionofsustainable
agriculturalmeans,suchaslivefencingandwindbreaks.

Increasingtheproductionofmarketqualityvegetablesforsaleandhomeconsumption.

Assistyourcommunitytodevelopa5yearactionplanorupdatetheexistingone.

Promoteimprovedseedselection,storage,andhandlingtechniques.

Cameroon
SustainableLivelihoodswillencompassaspectsoftheAgriculture,Environment,andCommunityEconomic
Developmentsectorsitisintendedtoassistfarmersandthosewhoworkwithagriculturalproductsfrom
farming/productiontomarket.Nearly80%ofCamerooniansfarmingandrelatedbusinesses(producttransformation
andsales)provideforthemajorityofCameroonian'slivelihoods.Thereisaneedforimprovedfarmingpractices,
production,agroforestry,andproducttransformation,aswellasimprovedorganizationaldevelopmentandbusiness
skillsforfarmersandassociatedincomegeneratingactivities
