Mathematical modeling of instruments.

Types of errors, Methods of error analysis.

Calibration of instruments, calibration report & certification. Computer aided calibration and
measurement, Minimizing prediction errors.

Classification of Instrumentation systems- series, parallel and series-parallel systems. Loading
Effect on instrumentation systems.

UNIT II: 15 PERIODS
Electrical Transducers: Resistance Transducers: Basic principle , Potentiometer, loading
effects on potentiometers, Resistance strain gauges, Types, Characteristics, Lead wire
connections, calibration of strain gauges, Resistance thermometers, RTD circuits, thermistor,
hot wire Anemometer.
Inductance transducers: Basic principles, LVDT, loading conditions, Application of LVDT,
RVDT, LVDT load cells, LVDT pressure Transducer, Synchros, Induction Potentiometer,
Variable reluctance Accelerometer, microsyn.
Capacitive Transducers: Basic principle, Capacitance displacement transducers, Equibar
Differential pressure transducer, Feedback Type Capacitive proximity pickup.

UNIT III: 15 PERIODS
Special Transducers: Thermocouples: types and ranges, characteristics, laws of
thermocouples, cold junction compensation, IC temperature sensors AD 590.
Piezo electric Transducers: Materials, principle, Equivalent Circuit, Piezo electric coefficients,
Piezo electric Accelerometers.
Elastic Transducers: Bourdon Tubes, Diaphragm, Bellows.
Miscellaneous Transducers: Magneto-strictive Transducers, Magneto elastic Accelerometer,
magneto-strictive Torque Transducer, Fiber optic transducers, Micro bend Displacement
Sensor, Digital displacement transducer, Hall Effect transducer, Sensors for angular
measurement using non contact type (wireless).

UNIT IV: 15 PERIODS
Smart sensors and Standards: Introduction to Intelligent sensors: smart sensors for
temperature and SQUID Sensors, Film Sensors, MEMS.
Ultrasonic measurements: ultrasonic methods of measuring thickness, depth and flow, variables
affecting ultrasonic testing in various applications. Laser based displacement transducers
Industry Standards: RS-232C, RS- 422, RS-485, IEEE 488, IEC 625.
Foundation Field bus & Profibus: Introduction, Design, Calibration, Commissioning, Application
in Hazardous and Non-Hazardous area.

amp circuit - Use of op-amp for different applications-Structure of Power electronics- Various

UNIT II: 15 PERIODS
Designing a linear power supply using op amp- Selection of components- Design of heat sink
and design of transformer for the linear power supply- Design of low drop out regulators- Design
of Switched Mode Power Supply-Design of temperature indicator using IC sensors. Errors due
to resistance drift, Op amp offset voltage drift, offset current drift. Error budgeting

UNIT III: 15 PERIODS
Design of PID temperature controllers. Basics of PID parameter selection-Design of constant
current sources with error budgeting- Design of 4-20 ma current transmitter for resistance
sensors- Design of 4-20 ma current transmitter for LVDT sensor-Design of oscillator circuits-
Phase sensitive detection and use of the same for lock-in amplifier design.

UNIT IV: 15 PERIODS
Design of an on/off temperature controller-Design of different types of heater drive circuits.-
Thyristor and transistor based drive circuit design- Error budgeting- Design of proportional
temperature controller circuit using thermocouple temperature Sensor- Design of heater drive
circuits using triacs and transistors. Use of pulse width modulation circuits. Use of MOSFETS
and IGBTs. Short circuit protection techniques.
