Overview:
Personal Development Plan
Personal Development Planning (PDP) is a process that enhances and supports your
experience as a student. By engaging in PDP you will be reviewing, building and reflecting
on your personal and educational development. The process encourages you to take a
step back and reflect on what you have achieved in a structured way. It also involves
clearly identifying your goals and planning the steps you need to take to accomplish them.
It is driven by:
Reflecting: on past skills gained, on successes and failures
Planning: how you are going to develop the skills that you want or need in order to
complete your degree, follow a specific career or achieve a personal goal

PERTAMA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
SCHOOL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING
B.Eng(Hons) in Civil Engineering

The aim is:
to develop your capacity to understand what and how you are learning
to review and reflect on your own learning successes (and failures)
to use that insight and experience to plan for your own personal, educational and
career development.
Skills and Experience

A skill is the ability to do something; something that you do with difficulty or ease.
Everyone has hundred of skills and most of us overlook many of our skills. In this
assignment you have opportunity to review your skills and reflect on areas of strengths
and areas that needed improvement.

TASK 1
Prepare your portfolio checklist and the following documents must be enclosed in your
portfolio :

o Review Skills 2-How did I rate my Skills? (Questionnaire)
SWOT Analysis
Evidence of your work experience/Professional/Voluntary work, etc
Misc. correspondence (ex. emails from lecturer/tutor/work place supervisor, etc.
(expressing your satisfaction of work)
[60%]

TASK 2
Prepare your Personal Development (PDP) action plan according to the format given (See
attachment) and keep copies of your completed PDP action plan in your portfolio.
[40%]

Evaluation

Your final grade on the portfolios will reflect your initial checklist preparation (5%), the
completeness of your career action plan (25%), self awareness activity (30%) and the
completeness of your PDP action plan (40%).

References

All sources must be cited appropriately (see discussion of plagiarism on CE
1201 Skills Academic Learning in Civil Engineering). Here are some general
guidelines.
You must draw on at least 5-peer reviewed sources for your assignment. These
references may include your textbook or other books or peer-reviewed scientific
journal articles from the library or on reserve. "Peer-reviewed" simply means that
other scientists have commented on the appropriateness of the methods and
conclusions prior to publication.
While you can use web sites for additional information, they must be cited
properly and web sites do not count towards the three source minimum. Very few
web sites have any kind of peer-review process to ensure high standards of
scientific methodology

PLAGIARISM

Plagiarism is forbidden. Any ideas not your own must be properly cited. If you take
ideas or actual text from other sources (fellow students, books, articles, web sites) without
citation, you will get no credit for the portfolio. With proper citation style, and writing ideas
in your own words, there should be no reason for plagiarism to happen. If you have any
questions, please talk with your assessors.

EXERCISE 2: HOW DO I RATE MY SKILLS?

Name

UEL ID No. Date of Birth .

Purpose:

In this exercise you have opportunity to review your skills and reflect on areas of
strengths and areas that needed improvement. It would be timely to re-evaluate
these skills and see where you need to focus your energy on gaining a new skill
that will help you to fulfill your goal, task or project.
(Adopted from Goldsmith, University of London, 2008)

Direction:
This questionnaire consists of series of questions and should take you about 10-15
minutes to complete (although theres no time limit). Read each statement and
rate yourself using 1-5 scale, with 1 being Strongly Agree and 5 being Strongly
Disagree on how well the statement describes you, not on what you think the
answer should be.
