Your mothers engagement ring. Your extra car. Your
workshop full of pricy woodworking tools that you dont
use anymore. You may have a list, or just an idea, of which
of your kids and grandkids youd like to leave these valuable
items to after you pass away. And you probably want to
avoid the common problem of family members ghting
over inheritances.
Even the most mild-mannered people, perhaps fueled by
their grief, can behave irrationally or get greedy when it
comes to inheritances. You dont want your family to end
up ghting in court, battling over that ring, car and drill,
fracturing the family and wasting money on legal fees. And
you certainly dont want them angry with you after youre
gone, feeling that youve favored one child over another.
Some seniors are anxious enough about the inheritance
of their belongings to create a plan in advance, gifting their
kids and grandkids with a number of items so that their
offspring can enjoy them now, and so the seniors can see
their kids and grandkids enjoying those beloved items. Id
love to see my granddaughter wear my mothers engagement
ring, says retiree Anne Daniels. What good is it doing in
my safe?
The joy of seeing kids and grandkids wearing and enjoying
jewelry can make it totally worth the decision to give them
the items they otherwise wouldve received via a letter, after
youre gone, when they are sad. I wouldnt want that ring
to be a symbol of sadness for my granddaughter, says
Daniels.
Many grandparents enjoy the great family moment of
giving a grandchild the keys to their extra car, or giving their
kids their RV for a cross-country trip.
And then, of course, theres the nancial end of a luxury
gift item. The car or RV could be sold by your kids to help
nance the start of a business, to put a down payment
on a home in a safer community or to help pay for your
grandchilds college tuition.
Before you start making calls to your kids and grandkids
to offer them your possessions, talk to your accountant and
tax advisers. While you may resent Uncle Sams place in line
for the value of your belongings, there are strict tax rules
about gifts given to relatives. Ask your tax adviser for the
current value limit on tax-free gifts that you can give, so that
you always stay within the letter of the law.
Tax values of pre-inheritance gifts are different from
inheritance taxes and estate taxes, which are congured
after your death. These are tax values applied to personal
gifts, and you will need professional tax advice to assess and
document each of these gifts before you bestow them.
Tax issues aside, think about your kids and grandkids
connections to the items youd like to leave them to help
you decide who gets what. If your daughter was especially
close to your mother, she may be the most logical choice
to inherit your mothers engagement ring. Have it
professionally assessed for its value, and record that value in
your daughters column on your gift records. Your son,
then, may get a gift or gifts of equal nancial value, if that is
how youd like to divide your presents.
Once youve decided who gets which pre-inheritance gift,
and once the values are recorded and assessed by your tax
professionals for your safety, you may enjoy planning the
presentation of these gifts to your loved ones.
Will you put a big red bow on the car? Give your daughter
the ring in your mothers jewelry box? Before you decide
on the presentation, consider that your kids and grandkids
may be taken aback by the delivery. It is, after all, difcult
for them to even think about the day when youre no longer
alive, and they might see your gift presentations as a sign
that youre gravely ill or perhaps depressed.
To avoid shocking them, discuss with them ahead of time
that youve been thinking about giving them some of your
precious possessions so that you can enjoy witnessing them
enjoying these items. Expect some questions and concern,
but once you assure them youre feeling just ne, you all
can look forward to your gestures of generosity. Maybe
youll give out these items as holiday presents.
Once your gifts are given, its a good time to talk with
your children about your wishes for after your death, how
youd like them to handle your estate and how youd like
them to let you know which other items they feel strongly
about. Once they got comfortable with this macabre
conversation, says retiree George McArdle, we actually
had fun talking about and recording who would like to
inherit what, and my sons surprised me by the things they
considered most valuable to them. Like my shing poles
and crabbing gear, not my wristwatches.
If two of your kids express interest in, say, a painting,
talk together to decide now who will inherit it, and put it in
writing so that your loved ones dont wind up wasting their
post-tax inheritance money hiring lawyers to get that $50
painting or those shing poles.
Invite your kids to create their own personal estate plans,
as well, so that their kids are protected in case of the worst.
Its not fun talking about death, but clear communication
now can help avoid clashes later.

Todays senior citizens are traveling the
world, taking trips of a lifetime to exotic lands
and fullling dreams to visit more regions
of the United States. Those seniors who
have the time and money to travel and are
Internet-savvy enough to research and book
their dream getaways strive to squeeze the
most they can out of every moment of their
lives, says Joe Marconi, author of Future
Marketing: Targeting Seniors, Boomers and
Generations X and Y.
According to the Yankelovich Monitor
report on consumer research, 58 percent of
seniors take overnight vacations (usually
guided tours) several times a year. Many
seniors enjoy travel so much that they buy
vacation homes or invest in timeshares to
have a second home to enjoy.
And theyre not traveling alone.
According to the American Animal Hospital
Association, 36 percent of senior travelers
not only travel with their pets, but they also
invest in travel accessories for their pets:
travel beds, bags, water and food bowls, seat
belts and more.
While keeping pets safe during travel is
a priority for any animal lover, its of the
utmost importance to keep yourself safe,
as well. You may be far away from your
doctors or a quality hospital, so practice
smart self-care while on vacation and take
smart wellness steps before you go on your
getaway:
Before Your Travels:
As you decide where in the world to visit,
think about the elements of the locale that
could affect your health, such as the climate
and especially the altitude. Some seniors
with heart or respiratory conditions could
nd it harder to breathe at high altitudes,
and heat and humidity can also affect
health issues. Think also about whether the
region is prone to natural disasters such as
earthquakes and hurricanes.
Looking more closely at resorts or guided
tours, check into the amount of walking
that will be involved, especially if the resort
or tour covers hilly terrain. Ask whether
the resort offers shuttle service and
whether you can have a room that doesnt
require much walking or stair-climbing.
At Caneel Bay Resort, our eco-friendly
shuttles run constantly, so youll never have
to wait in the sun to catch an easy shuttle
bus ride over a hill, to the dining areas or
to one of our beaches, says Patrick Kidd,
director of sales for Caneel Bay Resort on
St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Get a pre-travel checkup. Visit your
doctor for a pre-trip checkup and tell
your physician about any illnesses and
medications youre on. Your doctor can
provide you with the vaccines needed for
the region in which youll be traveling, as
well as important shots such as tetanus.
More than half of tetanus cases occur in
people over the age of 65, says the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention.
Other important vaccines include those
for hepatitis, typhoid and polio. Check the
list of recommended vaccines and potential
limitations for seniors at cdc.gov, which
lists suggested vaccines by country.
While visiting your doctor, get prescriptions
for common travel illnesses, as well as
refreshed prescriptions for medications you
regularly take, and bring your medications
in their bottles along with copies of your
prescriptions.
Consider getting travel insurance to help
defray the costs of medical treatment.
The CDC advises looking into evacuation
insurance, as well, to cover the costs of
emergency transportation to the nearest
hospital or to a safe zone.
Make sure your smartphone will work
where you are. You may need to get an
international phone or plan, and ask your
resort whether they offer free wi to
make connecting to home easier and less
expensive.
During Your Travels
Always wear sunscreen, even when youre
not on the beach. The sun can shine on you
regardless of where you are and increase
your risk of skin cancer. Hats and UV
sunglasses further protect you.
Always wear a seat belt, no matter what
mode of transportation youre using.
Stay on paved pathways while walking
around a resort. Some islands have red
ant colonies in their lawns. Ant bites are
painful, and you could be allergic.
Use insect repellents while on vacation to
help prevent mosquito-borne illnesses and
discomfort from bites.
Use hand sanitizers regularly, especially
before each meal, to protect yourself from
germs and illnesses.
Take food and water precautions seriously.
In some regions, water can carry bacteria
that lead to illness.
Dont travel at night in questionable areas.
It may be safest to stay on resort grounds.
For more travel tips for seniors, visit cdc.
gov/travel.
And before you go away, make sure a
loved one has your complete travel itinerary,
as well as contact information for your resort
or tour. If you have any health conditions,
wear a medical information bracelet, and if
your itinerary gets too challenging, slow
down and relax.

Recent weather events such as Superstorm Sandy on the East Coast, wildres in the
West, snowstorms, tornados and earthquakes have certainly created a reminder that
Mother Nature can wreak some havoc. After major storms, your power may go out for
days or weeks, food may be hard to nd in supermarkets, and you may wonder how
when roads are impassable youll be able to get your medications from the pharmacy.
The Red Cross advises creating a very detailed emergency preparedness plan before
those tornado sirens go off, when all is calm and quiet in your world, and when you can
think clearly, planning for the worst but hoping for the best.
Here are some steps to take, but consult with your townships ofcial website to
get information thats specic to your area, e.g., the locations of shelters and warming
stations. Bookmark that site now on your computer and smartphone so you can easily
access it when the lights go out.
Step 1: Know What Can Happen
But dont make assumptions that certain weather disasters couldnt happen in your
area. A tornado can happen anywhere. As were seeing in weather reports, that creek
a half-mile from your house can rise higher than you expect, causing ooding that not
only lls roads but can affect power stations in your region. Dramatic weather, facility
incidents and regional power outages caused by a car hitting a power pole miles away
could cause emergencies.

these innovative technologies
are designed to preserve speech

Finally theres a hearing aid
designed to let you hear
comfortably in noise.
Have You Thought About Invisible?

made. It is custom t to your unique ear canal for all day comfort, and rests deep inside your ear where no
one can see it.
SoundLens come with Starkeys innovative features, including the industrys most proven feedback

easily, even in noisy environments like restaurants. We can now ft this technology on a wide range of
hearing losses and the hearing aids are available at three technology levels and price points to suit your lifestyle and your
budget. Please give our offce a call if you would like to come in for an appointment to discuss this exciting technology.
Step 2: Know How Youll Get Your Information
Again, look to your township website to nd out about and sign up for emergency
notication texts so youll be in the know in case your landline phone and power go out. You
also need to be aware of outdoor warning sirens and understand what they mean. And tune
a battery-operated radio to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather
radio station to give you access to essential information about evacuations and recovery plans.
Again, on your smartphone, bookmark your weather website for easy access to disaster
information.
Step 3: Create Your Emergency Plan
If you have mobility issues and know youll need assistance during an emergency, identify
three local people you can call upon and with whom youve prediscussed your emergency
plan. Provide a spare key to ideally two neighbors so they can check on you. Also, designate
an out-of-town relative whom you will contact to let know you are OK. Then he or she can
call your other kids and grandkids with an update. During storms, communications systems
may be spotty.
Next, familiarize yourself with the emergency exits in your building. Post emergency
phone numbers by your phone and emergency emails by your computer.
Make sure you have your ID and health insurance information in your wallet or handbag
as well.
And one often-forgotten detail is to arrange for direct deposit of your checks into your
bank account so your money is accessible. After emergencies, ATM machines often get
tapped out of cash, so its a good idea to have emergency funds safely stored in your home.
Select two accessible locations as a meeting place for you and the members of your
household to cut down on chaos and stress after the disaster is over and recovery begins.
Its a good idea to have a tote bag packed with a few changes of clothing, clean socks and
underwear, some of your unexpired medications and other essentials in case you will need
to hurry off to a shelter or be evacuated. Stow this in a closet by your exit for a grab-and-go
that can make you more comfortable during your stay in a safety zone.
Know where to go in your home for any emergency. For a tornado warning, into the
basement would be best, and for a windstorm, an interior room away from windows.
Know how youll protect and care for your pets, as well as where your township will keep
pets if youre in a shelter.
Check your insurance coverage now to be sure you understand what is covered and what is
not in case of an emergency. You may have or be able to get ood insurance, so ask your
adult child to help you review the details of the best insurance coverage if youre unclear
about your plan.
Help prevent disasters by changing the batteries on your re and carbon monoxide
detectors annually and having your furnace inspected and serviced on a regular basis.
Step 4: Create Emergency Kits
The Red Cross suggests preparing separate emergency kits for your home, car and ofce,
and its smart to create kits for each member of your household, including pets, so you can
personalize health supplies and medications. Be sure to have enough emergency supplies
in your kits for at least three days use. Give yourself plenty of space for your emergency
supplies. A wheeled suitcase is a great carrier that adds easy mobility. Include in your kit
clothing, a battery-powered radio, a one-week supply of medicine, cash, nonperishable food,
water, a ashlight, copies of your insurance and credit card information, cash, and your
contact information as well as that of your loved ones. Also include cellphone chargers.
Step 5: Practice Your Emergency Plan
Emergencies are scary and stressful, and without practice, you may forget an essential. So
while life is calm, review your plans and refresh your emergency kits to serve you best in the
event of an actual emergency.

Often the issues that cause seniors to feel
loneliness are extremely preventable.
Sometimes it can be as easy as having a pet around
this is proven to reduce anxiety by creating a
sense of companionship. There is also something
magical that happens when we as humans are
taking care of someone else or focused outward.
We feel like we have a purpose, and this increases
condence, self worth and overall happiness.
Focusing outwardly in general is a great way
to cure the common pains of feeling alone.
Depending on your level of health, there are
many organizations out there that would love
some extra helping hands. Whether its through
volunteering for events, being a part of walks for
different causes or simply sending out Christmas
cards to kids in need (especially if you get to play
Santa), giving your energy away is often the one
thing that will make you feel more energized than
ever before! Its kind of like going to the gym; it
can feel like a hassle and a lot of work, but once you
nish your workout, you feel GREAT!
Speaking of the gym, staying active is a major way
to keep your heart full and to embrace that social
buttery. Regardless of your mobility, there are classes
for everyone every age, every level of skill. And at many
gyms, they have new classes scheduled at every hour. Water
aerobics is a great way to move around while being kind
to your joints and any remnants of old injuries. Plus, its a
great way to meet new people without feeling forced into
conversation at an event that you may not want to attend
in the rst place. Theres something about participating in
a group activity that automatically bonds the group with
ease. This is a huge reason athletes on teams are so loyal to
their sports family. The team grows with them, supports
them and becomes an incredibly important part of their
mental and emotional survival.
With that in mind, any activities in which youre building
a community are productive. Take a hands-on approach;
dont sit back and wait for someone to come to you. Check
out your local paper or your town/citys calendar of events
online. Search for groups that meet to discuss common
interests, goals or have regular get-togethers. Book clubs
are quickly becoming more and more popular, thanks in
part to Oprah reminding us all about the art of sitting
down and nishing a book. If you dont have the best
vision, there are audiobooks available on iTunes. They do
a great job with keeping their book list current with
both the top sellers and the classics.
Go on daily walks in the morning. Youd be
surprised at how much this will put you in a place of
gratitude. You can work out a schedule with family
members to walk with you or maybe you have a
friend close to your neighborhood who is on board
to pound the pavement before (or after) that cup of
morning coffee. Starting the day by getting outside
is one of the most rewarding experiences and allows
you to see the world with gratitude, something very
important in keeping up spirits, which will in turn
make you like a magnet, attracting new friends and
people into your life wherever you go. If walking
isnt an option, you can go on a little car cruise or
even wheelchair cruise. Just make sure to keep it
consistent no matter how bad the weather is or how
little you feel like getting up.
If your family or friends dont live close by, or
perhaps their schedules dont allow them to be your
walking buddy, there are many services in which
you can hire someone who is a good t to walk
with you. Theres nothing wrong with this successful
bosses and business owners hire people for all sorts of
jobs and end up truly bonding with their employees,
so make sure to nd someone you really like spending
time with, and think of it as something where you are both
gaining experience from your time together.
So remember, focus outwardly. Think about how you
can add value and help in situations. If you have grandkids,
get as involved in their lives as possible, and if you dont,
Im sure there are many kids out there who would love a
mentor that cared enough to share stories and spend time
getting to know them. You are one special person with a lot
to give. Make sure to keep giving that love away!
