THE PAST SIMPLE TENSE

We use the Past Simple:


~ to talk about something that
happened at a specifc time in the
past
e.g. She fnished her homework an
hour ago.
The teacher gave us a lot of
homework for the weekend.
~ with time phrases such as:
e.g. last year, last month, last
week, last onday,
three years ago, two days ago,

yesterday morning, yesterday


afternoon,

Form
~ We make the past simple of regular verbs
with the sufx ed.
e.g. They played foot&all last weekend. '
She walked to work yesterday.
~ We make the past simple of irregular
verbs in various ways.
e.g. go ( went ' ha)e * had ' read ( read
write * wrote ' see ( saw ' gi)e ( ga)e
~ To make the negative we put the auxilliary
verb did not (the short form is didnt before
the main verb in its base form.
e.g. +e didn't watch T, last night. - ' +e
didn.t watched T, last night. /
0 didnt see 1im at school yesterday. - '
0 didn.t saw 1im at school yesterday./
~ !n short answers we use the personal
pronoun and did or didn't. We do not repeat
the main verb.
e.g. 2id you like the flm3 Yes, I did. or
No, I didn't.
