As a business owner, wife, and a mother of three children un-
der ten it is extremely hard to find time for me! In almost every
self growth book, success book, business books, relationship
book that I have read, as well as one of our principles we
teach in the Healing Touch Program, there is always the advice
to take care of yourself! Here is the quick summary - if you
dont take care of yourself you wont have anything left to take
care of others or your business. Contrary to what some might
think, carving out some me time isnt selfish. If you dont take
some time to clear your head, have some down time, youll be
more frazzled and less able to help both your clients and your
family. Take time for yourself!
I believe that self-care needs to be an everyday practice. It
doesnt need to be expensive or something that takes hours of
your time. The challenge I come across is finding time to fit self
care into my daily routine and in finding things that I enjoy do-
ing. All too often I find that self-care ends up at the bottom of my
priority list. I find that if I dont actually schedule time for myself,
it never happens.
Knowing that self care can make such a difference to my day to
day living, I have decided to put into practice scheduling time for
myself, and it must come first. As I stated to do this, I was
surprised that everyone that needed my time for their priorities
could and would work around my scheduled self-care to get
what they need. It all seems to work out if I schedule My Time
in advance. The lesson I learned is: You can either plan your life
or lets others plan it for you. You might as well be in control!
As you read through this months edition of Energy magazine, I
hope you will gain some extra reasons and ideas for doing self-
care. I really enjoyed Cyndi Dales article on self-care A Story of
Self Love. Cyndis story The Angel Who Forgot Her Shoes: A
Story About Love and Healing is a wonderful lesson on self-
care and becoming more for others while taking care of yourself.
A true practice that all care givers and practitioners of Healing
Touch should embrace.
Heres to making time for ourselves!

e underestimate the benefits of good
vocal expression. This does not nec-
essarily mean singing. It means helping the body
vibrate and function to its maximum capacity
through an anatomically correct posture which
then is activated by ones own voice. I cannot
emphasize enough the importance of learning to
make your own sound, each sound you make in
a day, in a way that nurtures you, supports you
and takes you more directly and fluidly on your
lifes path. Simply learning to make your own
sound in its fullest resonance and capacity is
fundamental to your well-being and health. This
applies even if you dont sing, cant sing or have
no desire to.
The following quote is an excerpt from The Conscious Ear
by Dr. A. Tomatis. His research over 40 years ago opened the
scientific door to what the wisdom from the ancients has always
shown: your own sound creates and expresses your essence as
a soul in this body in this time and place on this planet.
We transform the structure of our body when we speak, or
essentially speak to it, since ones body is the first thing to be
affected by the sound it utters. All the areas of the body are not
equally affected. Little by little, speech sensitizes the sensory
segments which detect the sound waves produced by the
voice. The areas most receptive to this information obviously
are located where the distribution of nerve fibers most sensitive
to pressure is at its highest concentration. Moreover, each of
us, according to what he is and what he has made of himself,
centers his activity in one part of his body, and it is to this part
that he speaks. That is his choice. That is why a champion cy-
clist makes his statements to the press in a hollow voice which
is weak in sibilants--- he is talking to the center of his activity,
almost the center of his life, which in this case are his legs. The
use of voice centered in the low frequency range is necessar-
ily bound up with the centering of interest in the lower part of
the body. The ideal would be for everyone to be able to touch,
in a homogeneous way the whole surface of the body..True
sound does not come only from the lips, but from the whole
body. (Tomatis, 1991, pages 82-83)
In my keynote at the Healing Touch Program conference in Au-
gust in San Antonio I will be demonstrating a series of simple,
effective exercises that you can use practically anywhere and
anytime for enhancing your sound circuit- which is your posture,
breath and self sound. Take a moment now and try one of them.
Sit comfortably with your back straight, feet flat on the floor
spaced a little apart. Put your hands gently on your chest and
breath as deeply as you can with an even inhale and exhale.
Try to let your abdomen, sides, chest and entire back gently
expand and contract while keeping your shoulders steady. Try
to let your collar bone move in and out as well. Begin to hum.
As you do so, very slowly move your head up a little or down
a little to find the position where you feel the resonance gener-
ated by your vocal chords pass most strongly to your cervical
vertebras and up and down your spine and throughout your
body. Continue this for a few moments, then let the hum die
away and take your time to feel what you feel. Then go about
your day.

hen I began attending Healing Touch
Program classes, accessing in-
formation from the field and receiv-
ing divine messages from patients angels or
guides was as natural to me as breathing was
to other students in these classes. My fellow
classmates were curious and constantly ask-
ing me if I was born with these abilities, or if I
developed them somehow. Good question?
I thought, and scanned my memory bank for
my response. Strange how I had forgotten this,
but the answer was quite clear these abilities
became commonplace over 20 years ago, when
I began meditating every day. Practicing Mindful-
ness Meditation regularly helped me experience
a calmer, clearer, happier, more focused and
peaceful mind. Somehow it also opened some
inner channels that seem to be connected to the
energy fields which contain valuable information
that is at our disposal and which many believe
are our birthright.
If you want to open your information channels further, perhaps
practicing Mindfulness Meditation will also work for you. What is
Mindfulness Meditation? It is a wide spread progressive practice
for healers, self-improvement enthusiasts, spiritual explorers,
and people of all walks of life who recognize the importance of
stillness in a very loud world. In its simplest form, Mindfulness
can be described as being in calm, nurturing awareness of
ones physical sensations, environment, feelings and thoughts.
Even if you are not interested in opening yourself further to
the divine through such means, I highly suggest you practice
daily. Why? Because it is sorely needed for most of us! As
members of a chronically busy society, we are not immune to
the constant bombardment of stimuli. Although we have made
a special commitment to take better care of ourselves, many
of us still have days wherein we are sleep deprived, eating on
the run, and scrambling through endless to-do lists - without
pausing to take a breath. In an attempt to survive this frenetic
lifestyle, it is very easy to fall into the trap of becoming drones
racing around on auto-pilot, searching for quick fixes while
struggling to suppress feelings of anxiety, depression, or dis-
satisfaction. When we live like this, it is very easy to get stuck
in our heads, disconnect from our bodies and forget to connect
with, and listen to, our hearts.
Practiced regularly, Mindfulness Meditation helps us combat
and break free of this drone cycle. It certainly has become an
area of interest in the scientific community, with a great deal of
research revealing a wealth of attainable benefits. A few of the
benefits touted include: physical healing, strengthened im-
mune system, reduction in suffering, increased grey matter in
the brain, and higher dopamine levels. As the positive results of
Mindfulness Meditation accumulate, the medical world and nu-
merous businesses are beginning to offer Mindfulness trainings
to their patients and staff.
Unfortunately there is no quick fix, no 3-step program, and
Mindfulness Meditation:
A Healers Tool

Mindfulness Meditation
certainly no medication to attain Mindfulness. But, by practicing
simple daily exercises, you will soon begin to experience some
neat benefits.
There are literally hundreds of different ways to practice mind-
fulness, but here is your first and most basic instruction. Put
aside 10 to 60 minutes a day from your busy life and steal away
to a reasonably quiet, private space. Get yourself situated in a
comfortable seated position, with both of your feet touching the
ground and your hands placed softly on your knees or clasped
gently together. Close your eyes and take three deep, relaxing
breaths, letting go of any stress. Begin by setting the intention to
open your channels to the divine realm during this meditation.
Then, place your attention on experiencing your body sitting on
your seat. Notice all and any heat and touch sensations - the
warmth of your legs against the chair, the coolness of the floor,
the vibration of your heartbeat in the chair-back. All of these
things will help ground you in your physical awareness.
Now take your awareness off your touch sensations and direct it
to your breathing. Notice every aspect of your breath, including
the in-breaths, the out-breaths and any pauses in-between. If
your mind is like that of most people, it will have
a tendency to wander away, leaving the breath.
If this happens, gently bring your attention back
to your breath. It may help to make silent mental
notes to yourself, like In, Pause, or Out.
Dont force your attention. Be kind to yourself.
This is a gentle, nurturing process that is dif-
ferent for everyone. Simply experience your
breathing at a focused and intimate level.
Believe it or not, you will improve and the pro-
cess will eventually come to feel easier and more
natural. Do not expect too much from yourself
and you will not be disappointed! All that is re-
quired of you is to be present with and accepting
of exactly where you are. Soon, you will begin to
feel the calming, healing effects and the beauti-
ful heart openings of this practice. Who knows,
you may even begin getting messages (auditory,
or visual, or feelings, etc.) from some pretty cool, loving divine
energy.
Good luck, good healing, good health and good mindfulness!

Eating To Raise Your Vibration
Y
ou are in the flow. You have been thinking
about a business challenge and suddenly
the answer comes and you know it is exactly the
right choice. Connections to people and resourc-
es happen magically. You have a bill due and a
prospective client calls to book an appointment
which is exactly the amount of money you
need. Your vibration is aligned with source ener-
gy and the Universal Plan is able to unfold as it
should, without resistance, for the highest good
of all concerned.
Do you want to make that happen more often?
Sure you do. That is part of why we meditate, use Healing
Touch on ourselves, do yoga, use crystals, tap (EFT) and em-
ploy a host of other modalities. We want to align ourselves with
nature and the Divine so that energy can move through us.
Many of us use pendulums or muscle testing to sense the ener-
getic patterns of a person or a supplement we are considering.
But what about our food?
When we are aware of our own imbalances (or those of clients)
and use Healing Touch to foster a return to balance, making
conscious food choices can also aid in the process and foster
healing. For example, let us say I am correcting an imbalance
in my root chakra. I would want to add more beetroot to my diet.
Why beetroot? Because there is correlation between having a
red vibration and the fact that it is a grounded vegetable. It car-
ries that energy pattern with it. Therefore, there are times when
one might choose apples or cherries to work on the root chakra.
Although these carry the vibration of red, they grow high and
do not have the same vibration of rootedness that beets or
radishes have. They are more appropriate when one has a root
imbalance with elements of simply being lost (as opposed to
those who are not grounded because they are living in their up-
per chakras or perhaps more in the ethereal plane. They do not
want to participate on Earth very much and spend most of their
time elsewhere.)
If one is not grounded, as in not tied to their purpose or in touch
with their spiritual OR earthly nature, then red/root vegetables
would be of great value. If one is not grounded, as in not living
in the material world very well, then foods which grow higher
are more appropriate. The food acts as a bridge for vibration.
Use the food which matches where the person is and which
also carries the vibration that will bring him or her into balance.

Energy
of Food

The Energy of Food
We can think about the colors of food and how they relate to the
chakras. This is an easy first step. So, for second chakra issues,
we may choose oranges or butternut squash. For fourth chakra
issues we may select greens of any sort or kiwis or honeydew.

Another way to consider the energy patterns of food is by how
they grow. The closer to the ground a food grows, the lower the
vibration. The higher it grows, the higher the vibration. This ap-
plies solely to quantitative energy. Looking at it this way, butter-
nut lettuce may have the same amount of energy as cherries -
but there is a qualitative difference which one needs to consider.

We know there are differences in the energy patterns of dif-
ferent foods which has been shown and proven with Kirlian
photography. Cooked processed foods have smaller auras.
They have reduced energy, compared to their uncooked
counterparts, which have a lower vibration and chaotic energy
fields. Compare a cookie and an apple and you will find the
same thing. We are what we eat on a vibrational level, as well
as, a nutritional level.

uring the years that I worked toward
Healing Touch certification, I also stud-
ied to become a certified yoga instruc-
tor. While studying in an ashram by a river in
southern Virginia, I was astounded and also
gratified to learn that ancient yogis, many cen-
turies ago, had discovered the human energy
field. In Sanskrit these energy layers are called
koshas or sheaths. The yogis recognized five
interpenetrating sheaths around the innermost
Supreme Self, our inner divinity. These sheaths
are named Annamaya kosha (the physical self);
Pranamaya kosha (the etheric body); Manomaya
kosha (mental/emotional); Vijanamaya kosha
(celestial or wisdom/intellect body) and the
Anandamaya kosha, the causal or bliss body. (In
Barbara Brennans system, these five are some-
what differently divided to make a total of seven
energy layers.) Chakra is of course a Sanskrit
word that means wheel, a symbol of the vortex
shape of etheric energy around the bodys nerve
plexes, perceived by yogis with second sight or
intuitive wisdom.
Recently, while visiting a Smithsonian art museum, I saw a
large, exquisite painting of a yogi in meditation, with chakras
portrayed symbolically, entitled Chakras of the Subtle Body.
The canvas was painted in 1823 but depicted a model of the
entire human form known by yogi experts thousands of years
before. There were more than seven chakras illustrated.
In the west we think that yoga, introduced to the US in 1893 by
the Indian Swami Vivekananda but now a household word, is
about developing strength, flexibility and the ability to relax. It is
that, but it is also so much more. It is about bringing awareness
to the body, mind and spirit. It is much more than a system of
exercise or series of physical poses we know as hatha yoga.
That is only one branch. In fact the classic reason to do yoga
postures is to prepare the body for meditation and to bring the
body, mind and spirit into unison.
Yoga, I realized during my instructor courses, is both an art and
(mainly) a science. The different poses, and there are liter-
ally hundreds, reveal the art of manipulating the physical body
to alter the flow of vital energy (called prana in Sanskrit) to
work toward balance and harmony in the energy field, which is
precisely the aim of Healing Touch and other healing modalities.
Not only are the seven major chakras affected but also hun-
dreds of other minor ones at the joints of the skeletal system.
The pranamaya sheath or etheric layer contains the nadis,
nerve channels in the subtle body, which were also discovered
by the Chinese and labeled as meridians. On this level acu-
puncture causes subtle shifts in the energy flow and so affects
the physical layer. The etheric layer is also the interface be-
tween the physical body and the mental body or mind, hence
the importance in yoga of breath work. One of the basic breath-
ing practices is called nadi shodanum or nadi suddhi, or alter-
nate nostril breathing. It is also known as the nerve-cleansing
breath because it directly affects the flow of energy in the subtle
nerve channels, thereby calming the nervous system.
There is a system of Tibetan yoga, centuries old, which was
also developed to affect the chakras of the body and prepare for
meditation. The most well-known form is called the Five Tibet-
ans, first publicized in the west in 1939 in a book by Peter

Kelder. See the link at www.lifeevents.org/5-tibetans-energy-re-
juvenation-exercises.htm for an explanation and demonstration
of this form.
Most mornings I do a series of yoga postures, plus a weekly
yoga class. We all store tension in our bodies. I often recom-
mend yoga to my HT clients. Even if I feel sleepy, grumpy or
dopey, I always feel better after the session, more alert but
calmer, more flexible and more grounded. My system has been
re-balanced. As one of my yoga teachers said, Discipline is
remembering what you want. I highly recommend a regular
practice of yoga as a significant part of self-care, something
which we as healers are apt to minimize. I believe that a consis-
tent practice of yoga as part of self-care enhances the work that
we do for others.

The books that help you the most
are those which make you think the most.
-Theodore Parker
In 2005, with input from attorney Midge Murphy,
Healing Touch founding elder Dr. Dorothea Hov-
er-Kramer wrote her well-received book, Creating
Right Relationships: A Practical Guide to Ethics
in Energy Therapies. I found it to be such a good
guide that I gifted my students with copies. My
personal copy is well dog-eared from use and
has been lent out on several occasions.
In 2010, the publisher of Energy Psychology Press, asked
Dorothea to write a new book on professional ethical stan-
dards for energy practitioners who come from many differing
backgrounds and skill levels in over 250 different modalities.
This new book, Creating Healing Relationships: Professional
Standards for Energy Therapy Practitioners is the result and
replaces the previous work.
As energy modalities are finding more acceptance in integrated
health care, the issues of integrity, ethics, professional practice
standards, and legal concerns are becoming ever more impor-
tant. Creating Healing Relationships provides a thoughtful, elo-
quent, and easy to assimilate guide to avoiding pitfalls in energy
therapy practices. The book is a timely update and expansion of
Dorotheas previous work that will help practitioners of the many
energy modalities to become more professional and effective.
As practitioners energetically enter the spiritual contract with
their clients, it is paramount that clients feel safe and supported
while they are on
their journey to
self-actualization.
Whether we are
new or seasoned
practitioners,
we must be proactive in our role as energy practitioners. Our
own inner work is ongoing. Maintaining self-care, keeping our
skill and knowledge level current, and staying within our per-
sonal and professional scope of practice is a continuing com-
mitment. Professional standards of the highest level must be
implemented when completing informed consent, setting mutual
goals, documenting sessions, and adhering to confidentiality.
Dorothea explains the importance of setting healthy parameters
and boundaries with clients, colleagues, other professionals,
and the community at large and for making appropriate referrals
when necessary.
Exploring this new book has given me the opportunity to reflect
and refocus my values as a Practitioner, Instructor, Qualified
Mentor, and Member of the Healing Touch Ethics Committee. I
conclude we must remain honest and open in our dealings with
students, peers, fellow instructors, and the HT Program while
staying true to our values as we guide others.
This book works well with the HT curriculum and its emphasis
on self-care. The exercises are an added value because self-
help tools maintain optimal whole person wellness. Dorotheas
book serves as a fine guide towards excellence. As profession-
als we have an obligation to develop our gifts to assist others
and to remember that we are never alone.
Dorotheas book also made me more aware of my responsibil-

ity as a teacher. I feel that to add strength and stability to the
various levels of Healing Touch, every practitioner and instructor
should be encouraged to read it. I feel it is so important to devel-
op consistency with my students and will therefore gift the book
to many and include a number of copies in my lending library.
A strong set of ethical principles and professional standards
need to be a part of every practitioners mode of living. Stan-
dards of care need to be in place to avoid harm and possible
ethical violations. Specific risk management practices to de-
crease practitioners vulnerability to possible repercussions and
related liabilities are carefully examined in this vibrant book.
The case studies of over twenty dilemmas are stimulating and
thought provoking. They map out possible directions for dealing
with ethical issues.
As a member of the Ethics Committee, I am proud to be part
of an organization that adheres to the high standards we have
in place with our Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice
and a strong united Ethics Committee to resolve grievances
that may arise.
Dorotheas new book Healing Relationships: Professional Stan-
dards for Energy Therapy Practitioners will assist you on your
path to becoming more fully yourself. It helps the most because
it will make you think the most. I highly recommend this book!

A Story of Self Love
Like most healers, I struggle to find time and
space to take care of myself. I am not talk-
ing about performing the daily tasks of living,
like washing the dishes, walking the dogs, and
in my case, attending the dozens of traveling
baseball games that this year, have all involved
huddling in the rain under a blanket. (It would be
more fun if my sons team would win.) The real
dilemma is that sometimes I sub-consciously
consider self-care - which does not include
dishes, dogs, and baseball disasters - at odds
with my calling as a healer.
Logic is not only on the side of giving love but also of receiving
love. At some level, I know that you can not give what you do
not have. If I do not care for myself, I will not be able to care for
others. If I do not allow the SourceGod, the Divine, the All,
Allah, the Creator, the Motherto care for me, how can I con-
vince others that there is a Source that desires to heal them? If
I do not perform the small tasks of self-care that lead to health,
such as eating right, sleeping well, and having fun, how credible
am I when prescribing self-care for others? It is hard to remem-
ber these truths, however, as I have spent my life earning a
Ph.D. in codependency.
Instead of imparting the wisdom of self-care through an essay, I
decided to write a story about the seeming-quandary of giv-
ing to others while providing for the self. In a way, this story is
actually about the nature of love. As strange a phenomenon as
love is, it is the only medicine there is. This curative is available
to us, not only others. What we give, we also receive, but when
we receive, we are also better able to give. Such is the circle of
love. To include ourselves in the circle is to create more love for
all.
The Angel Who Forgot Her Shoes:
A Story About Love and Healing
Once upon a time there was an angel who knew she was com-
pletely and wildly connected to the Source, no matter what. She
was so excited when the Source asked her to come to earth to
share its infinite light, for the earth was a dark place and in need
of the reassurance of eternal love and the bliss of golden grace.
While she was packing her bags, the Source walked in. Poking
through her suitcase, the Almighty made an observation.
You did not bring many clothes. Or undergarments, or even
shoes for that matter. The Source wondered especially at the
latter, as this WAS a girl angel, after all.
Oh, I will not need them! She quipped brightly. All I need to
do is give away your Light and I will be continually refilled.
Though the Source advised otherwise, the girl angel did not pay
attention, and off she went, entering the healing field, the best
possible place to share divine light.
As you might expect, life did not go as she had hoped. After a
couple of decades of providing never-ending streams of loving
energy to others, the girl angel noticed that she was constantly
tired, even irritable. In fact, she was often sick. After coughing

her way through yet another healing session, she finally asked
the Source what she was doing wrong.
You do not wear clothes, undergarments, or shoes, the Source
gently reminded her.
What would these provide me? She queried.
Your clothes represent boundaries. Without distance between
you and others, you are in danger of becoming them. You are
here to become yourself, not someone else.
Your undergarments serve your inner self. To focus on the self
IS to focus on me - as you are part of me. The journey of life
involves becoming more of yourself, but also more of me.
Finally, your shoes help you walk this world without sinking too
deeply into it. There are many problems on this planet, and it is
not your job to fix all of them.
In fact, the Source continued, the less you care for yourself
the harder it is to connect with me. You will lose yourself in the
giving to others.
The girl angel thought about all of this and decided that per-
haps, the Source was right. She began to conduct what could
be called self-care.
First she asked the Source for clothes, which the Divine cus-
tomized for her. Separated from others woes, she ironically
found herself more objective and thus better able to serve oth-
ers. As she became used to distance, she started to notice how
she felt; what she liked or did not like - and what was unique
about her being. It became easier to carve out time for herself,
feed herself good food, and indulge in rest. More relaxed, her
life became more of an adventure, and she found herself enjoy-
ably traveling the many worlds inside and outside of herself.
The Source next selected appropriate undergarments - quali-
ties and virtues for her to hold dear and eventually embody.
What did it mean, to identify with faith, hope, love, and joy?
What did it mean, to be faith-full, hope-full, love-able, and
joy-full? In seeking to understand the true nature of being
an angelic spirit within a body, she uncovered her own deep
needsand wounds. The subsequent journey of self-healing
invited a deeper dependency on the Source, as well as, those
around her. She learned to trust, and became an even clearer
channel for divine love.
And in the buying of more shoes, her wardrobe became the
envy of everyone she met.
In the end, the girl angel realizedas did boy angels on the
same paththat she was not only on this planet to give love
and healing to others. She was also here to receive. By giving
and receiving, she discovered that this world became a little
more like the heaven she remembered. That knowledge made
her even happier.

very practitioner in a private practice
should be aware of the need to be in-
sured for General Liability and Profes-
sional Liability. Often practitioners focus on
being covered for malpractice and are not as
aware of, or concerned with, slip and fall ac-
cidents in their office space. When considering
practitioner Liability Insurance it is important to
look for comprehensive coverage.
Client safety in your place of business is your responsibility.
Whether your business is located in your home or a profes-
sional building, you should be aware of any slip and fall haz-
ards that could impact your clients. You should also be aware
of safety concerns around your treatment table, furniture
placement, the waiting room and restroom access.
Sometimes a client may have physical compromises that
make getting on and off a treatment table difficult, or even
dangerous. Inviting a client to move on to a table if they are
not able to do so comfortably could be an invitation for an
injury. If a client hurts their back trying to sit up from a lying
position on your table, you as the practitioner may ultimately
be held responsible for the cost of medical treatment and
even lost wages incurred.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, more
than one million people seek medical attention each year for
slip and fall accidents. Often these accidents happen as a
result of hazardous conditions on the property. A single claim
can cost a business tens of thousands of dollars. The average
direct cost for one disabling injury now approaches $28,000.
As a small business owner, you need to ask yourself: are you
properly insured?
The following checklist offers some factors to consider around
client safety:
Regularly check your treatment table to make sure the
legs are tight and all braces and cables are correct and
not loose or worn

Liability Insurance

Instruct clients how to properly get on and off the table
and assist them as needed
Provide a sturdy step stool if your table is too high for a
client to sit directly on it
Be aware of cords, especially if you use a table warming
pad
Be aware of placement of rugs and make sure they do
not challenge a client who may be unsteady on their feet
Make sure all areas of access to the building and your
office are well lit and free from tripping hazards
Lay out your office with straight lines to walk around to
reduce tripping over, or bumping into, objects
Make sure all furniture, especially chairs, are sturdy and
in good condition
It is very important to be aware of your office environment and
frequently inspect your treatment table. No one wants a client
to have an accident or injury, but it is necessary to be pre-
pared in the event that it happens. General and Professional
Liability Insurance does not have to be expensive. Healing
Touch Professional Associations Liability Insurance provides
a simple, inexpensive way to add this vital coverage. Protect
your business and personal assets by purchasing Comprehen-
sive Liability Insurance that covers slip and fall accidents.

T
here is a common awareness in the profes-
sional healing community about money
and healership, and the scarcity con-
sciousness that pervades the industry.
Most healers prefer to just do the work and not focus on the
financial aspects of their practice - often feeling in a quandary
about what to charge for their healing work, and sometimes if
they should even charge at all.
This becomes a problem when the healer - who is so impas-
sioned by her work and wants to have a full time practice and
support herself financially - but finds it difficult to do so.
Beliefs about money are a big part of this Money Mindset is-
sue. Most people are familiar with how beliefs work in creating
ones reality, especially with the popularity of the Law of Attrac-
tion - but how many people know how to make those necessary
mindset shifts to instill new beliefs?
In Marilees keynote address at this years conference, she will
be sharing an effective tool that will be powerful for healers
to use in their practice and life to make mindset shifts. Heal-
ers love this because it is based on the utilization of advanced
energy anatomy that comes out of the work of Barbara Brennan
in her book Light Emerging.
As a graduate of the four year Barbara Brennan School of Heal-
ing Science (1996), Marilee wrote her Senior Thesis entitled
Currency As Consciousness in which she created this tool
which has allowed people to shift their mindsets and create new
realities.
Interestingly, Marilee presented aspects of this work as a
keynote speaker at the first international Healing Touch confer-
ence in 1996 at the invitation of Janet Mentgen. Marilee shared
how she used this tool herself in building her physician-staffed
Wellness Center. When the conference was completed, many
attendees wrote in and shared their successes with the tool (in
letter form! ha ha! this was pre-email for lots of folks!).
Now 15 years later with many years of business experience,
Marilee, is returning to the Healing Touch community to share,
once again, the importance of adjusting ones mindset for mak-
ing more money - and a tool using energy to make that happen!

ealing Touch practitioners know how
deeply self care is emphasized through-
out the Healing Touch curriculum. Janet Ment-
gen continuously stressed the importance and
value of daily self care. But alas, knowing and
doing are two different things. Those who are
called to do the work of Healing Touch often
need to be reminded to examine their self care
practices and make necessary adjustments.
Self care and its relevance on health and wellness is being
studied and addressed widely today in relation to overall health
and wellbeing, and in relation to specific physical and mental
health conditions.
Regular and consistent self care results in increased
emotional and physical health. Caring for your body and spirit
helps you feel good about yourself and your life, and provides a
positive example.
Did you know that people who neglect to care for themselves
tend to have lower self esteem and greater levels of illness, un-
happiness and resentment? A recent study conducted at Duke
University cited that clergy often neglect self care and that many
deal with obesity, chronic disease, depression and anxiety.
The US Army recognizes the many benefits that self care has
on improving physical and mental health. They published a self
care toolkit for service personnel. It states: Self-care is practic-
ing prevention and taking personal responsibility for health.
It includes a wide range of health-related decision making
skills and care undertaken by individuals on their own behalf
. . . A self-care program emphasizes the importance of both
prevention and responsibility.
Take time to examine your commitment to self care and
consider the many ways that joining your Healing Touch com-
munity at this years conference can play a significant role in
nurturing and caring for your own beautiful self.
Coming to the conference will allow you to:

anet Mentgen established the Healing
Touch Worldwide Foundation in 1997 to
promote the work Healing Touch Programs
certified practitioners were doing. She knew early
on that peer reviewed research was necessary
to advance the professionalism of this profound
energy work and she also wanted to assure the
work was expanded and accepted worldwide.
Of course this costs money. She applied for and
received non-profit status with the IRS for her
new Foundation. This 501(c)(3) category benefits
donors through tax deductions.
The HTWF has grown substantially over the years. Thanks to
the support of donors from the Healing Touch community and
generous vendors at conference, HTWF has allocated over
$200,000 in grants. The live and silent auctions on banquet
nights at the HT annual conferences have provided most of the
funds for these grants. There are always grant requests in the
pipeline ready to be approved for funding. The more cash we
have in the coffers, the more can be distributed to worthwhile
projects, and the more the light of Healing Touch is spread
worldwide. Everyone can BE involved!
This years HTWF auctions at the HTP Conference in San An-

goal of $25,000 and more. It is up to all of us to manifest this
goal. There are many ways you can BE involved at Conference.

HT, we are relying on inner listening to improvise. Healing Touch
is an inaudible vibratory improvised duet between client and
practitioner. Know it or not, you are an accomplished improvisa-
tional musician.
James Oschman, one of our best spokespersons for energy
medicine, helps us understand why this is so. In terms of
vibrations, the human body can be compared to a symphony
orchestra. Each molecule corresponds to a particular instru-
ment. Each bend, rotation or stretch of a chemical bond has a
certain resonant frequency, and will give off certain notes if it is
energized. Energy Medicine: The Scientific Basis. (Churchill
Livingstone, Harcourt Publishers Limited, 2000, p. 123) The
energy spectrum covers some 90 octaves. Only a small portion
of this is audible to humans - 16 to about 18,000 pulses (cycles)
per second.
Hazrat Inayat Khan, the great Sufi mystic and teacher, brings
an ancient spiritual perspective to the primacy of vibration. The
Vedanta speaks of Nada Brahma, the Sound-God, the sound
that is God, of which all things are made...Before this world
was, all was in sound, God was sound, we are made of sound.
The Mysticism of Sound and Music (Shambala Publications,
Inc., Boston, MA, 1991, p. 24. This book is a compilation of
lectures and addresses delivered in the 1920s.)
Both the ancient wisdom of many spiritual traditions and the
cutting edge of modern physics posit that we are made of sound.
We Healing Touch practitioners work in a vibratory universe
that we literally cannot hear. Expanding our awareness and
professional capabilities into the audible spectrum is a natural
extension. We can enrich our vibratory impact by expanding our
healing repertoire into the audible range through toning.
Why make the case for toning to Healing Touch practitioners?
Because toning is the sound healing modality most closely
related to Healing Touch.
Toning is self-generated improvisational vocal sound used with
the intent of clearing, balancing and energizing the biofield.
Just as we center and attune in Healing Touch, so we cen-
ter and attune and trust the process moment by moment,
sound by sound, in toning.
Just as we follow the energy in Healing Touch, so we follow
the energy in toning.
Just as Healing Touch is an inaudible, vibratory, improvised
duet between client and practitioner, so toning is an impro-
vised duet where our audible voice partners with our own or
our clients biofield or part of it.
Have I convinced you yet that you are already doing inaudible
toning? that you are already accomplished at a form of musical

improvisation? Have I piqued your interest in experimenting with
the audible range?
If so, the place to start exploring audible toning is through self-
care. Why?
Toning is powerful. It is appropriate to become well acquainted
with this power first in our own field. In this process, we discover
our personal relationship to making audible sound. In this explo-
ration, many of us make transformative (re)discoveries, clearing
important blocks to vocal expression that we never addressed
before. The wounded healer grows.
There are endless ways to practice toning. Here are some basic
sonic elements you can use to clear, balance, connect, and
charge your energy field.
It is the intention more than the technique that determines the
outcome of toning. Each of the elements below can clear, bal-
ance, connect, and charge the energy field depending upon
our intention.
I encourage you to focus first on basic elements of human
sound, the precursors of language, because they are the most
familiar sounds to us: vowels, consonants, syllables, nasals.
Vowels -- in English these are Eee [wheel], Ih [if], Eh [wet],
Ah [papa], Oh [go] , Ooo [do] This list is in the order in which
we produce the sound in our vocal tract, from the front of our
palette to the back of our throat.
Consonants -- [e.g. bbbbbbb, kkkkkkkk, mmmmm, rrrrrrrrrrr,
sssssssssss, zzzzzzzzzzz
Syllables -- Combine a consonant and vowel [e.g. ba, ma, ta,
di, si, lo, ro, du, nu]
Nasals -- Hold your nose and tone any syllable.
Tone your name to yourself. Follow your name to places in your
body wishing to hear it, and then to places not wishing to hear it.
Now let us add several tools:
Drone is the repetition of one or very few elongated tones.
Droning is a gentle way to clear, balance, connect, and/or
charge the energy field.
Repeating a tone or tones at any speed can strengthen the
tone/s, enhance it/them. Repeating can also clear blocks or
congestion.
Opposition such as high/low, fast/slow, loud/soft has many
uses. One can sound a low tone for grounding when in the up-
per part of the body/field. One can sound slow tones to slow a
rapid pulse.
Intervals (the sound space between two different pitches e.g.
octaves, fifths, thirds) can connect chakras, organs, tissues that
are separated in the body/field.
As Kay Gardner, composer and sound healing pioneer so aptly
noted: The human voice is the most powerful and effective
musical instrument, or tool, for holistic healing of the human or-
ganism. Sounding the Inner Landscape (Stonington, Maine,
Caduceus Publications, 1990.).
Laurel Elizabeth Keyes, whose book Toning: The Creative
Power of the Voice (DeVorss & Co., P.O. Box 550, Marina del
Rey, CA, 90294, 1973, p. 12.) introduced Americans to this an-
cient practice, captures the power of toning for self care. Each
time that I Toned, my body felt exhilarated, alive as it had never
felt before; a feeling of wholeness and extreme well-being...
When I let [the Tone] pass out, freely, with no attempt to control
it, it appeared to cleanse the entire body, releasing tensions
and congested areas.
Don Campbell, sound healing pioneer and educator, and ton-
ing enthusiast created two excellent resources for us. They are
Healing Yourself With Your Own Voice, a CD from Sounds
True, original audiotape 1994, and The Roar of Silence: Heal-
ing Powers of Breath, Tone & Music (Wheaton, IL, The Theo-
sophical Publishing House, 1989.)
Keep in mind that chanting mantras, using chakra seed sylla-
bles, making Tao sounds is not toning because the sounds are
given from the outside and have a preexisting sonic structure.
They do not arise spontaneously from inner listening.
Ask to receive and transmit the perfect sounds, the perfect
tones, for yourself. There are no wrong tones. Follow the energy
and trust the process. Experiment, explore.

gan in 1982 with sound healing, using vocal and
instrumental improvisation to open hearts. She
led workshops on musical improvisation and on
leadership development for educational institu-
tions, nonprofits, government, and interested
individuals and groups during the 1980s. She trained with such
pioneers of sound healing as David Darling, Don Campbell, and
Jonathan Goldman. In 1996 a sound healer friend introduced
her to Maureen McCracken. She took Healing Touch Level 1
and 2 with Maureen and became hooked on Healing Touch.
Ginny has a part-time private practice in Monkton, MD, near
Baltimore, as an Integrative Wellness Educator. She works with
individuals, couples, and small groups. Her primary modalities
are Healing Touch and toning. She has a number of distance cli-
ents and can teach toning using Skype and Gmail video chat.
