design and problem based learning)
Introduction : Industrial design
Definition:
the use of a combination of applied art and applied
science to improve:
> aesthetics,
>ergonomics,
>Architecture,
>functionality, and
> usability of a product,
but it may also be used to improve the product's
marketability and production.

a branch of philosophy dealing with the nature
of art, beauty, and taste, with the creation and
appreciation of beauty.
Aesthetics
Ergonomics
the understanding of interactions among humans and
other elements of a system, and the profession that applies
theory, principles, data and methods to design in order to
optimize human well-being and overall system performance.
Architecture
A general term to describe buildings and other physical structures.
The art and science of designing and erecting buildings and other
physical structures.
The style and method of design and construction of buildings and
other physical structures.
The practice of the architect, where architecture means the offering or
rendering of professional services in connection with the design and
construction of buildings, or built environments.
[3]

The design activity of the architect, from the macro-level (urban
design, landscape architecture) to the micro-level (construction details
and furniture).
The term "architecture" has been adopted to describe the activity of
designing any kind of system, and is commonly used in describing
information technology.

Evolution
History: Do you know
JAPAN is the first country in Asia to
experience the Industrial Revolution
television, washing machine, refrigerator.
In rural CHINA, washing machine is used to
wash potatoes, fruits, vegetables etc.
Dishwasher is often used by the Westerner
but not popular among the Asian.

Assignment 1
<section 2 (utara) & 5 (terengganu) only>
Choose one product that available at school/ in the market
/industries.
<refer to the several suggested areas/categories in the next slide>
Discuss:
- The function: how it is work /functioning, - how they can
be used to assist people, to make tasks easier
- compare and contrast the technology based on the
evolution process, any improvement? Made comparison.
- discuss any difference in designing, aesthetics, safety,
colour selection, ergonomic, value to the culture/society etc.
- outlines the positive and negative impacts of the product

* Discussions should clearly describe the similarities and
differences of the technology before and after the evolution.

Design : Towards Problem Solving
FACT: Some farmers in the agricultural southwest of China used their
washing machines to wash their product such as potatoes and
vegetables, etc.

PROBLEM: This had the effect of clogging up the pipes with soil and
lead to machines breaking down. The frequent breakdowns complaints
in that region baffled the manufacturer, Haier Corporation.

IDEA/SUGGESTION: The result of their inquiry was a washing machine
designed to wash potatoes, fruits, vegetables and clothes!

IMPROVEMENT: By using an interchangeable washing barrel and
widening the diameter of the pipe, Haier could maintain the same
technology and provide farmers with a low cost solution.

DESIGN
PROCESS
Skype
Ecological

It has reduced the impact on the environment as communication is
done through the computer or the TV
Economic

Reduces the cost to consumers rather than having expensive and
large phone bills.
Social

Allows for more communication between people from a number of
continents. People keep in touch more.
Ethical

Could phone calls be recorded? Could people lose their privacy?
Legal

Forwarding of taped phone calls. Ensuring that all the intellectual
property is protected.
Example
PROJECT DEVELOPMENT ongoing activities (week 1-5)
SEMINAR/PROGRAM FOR PROJECT PRESENTATION
to be held in WEEK 5
Group activity
Selection of group members
Form an organisation

Group discussion should be established in the first week and discussions should be continue until the
day of seminar/program.
- Create an organisation in groups (assign role based on these positions)
(i) General manager : (planning, strategic thinking, organise meetings with teamwork,
program planner)
(ii) Acting general manager/secretary: (administration, project development, customer
relations, reports group activities and project
development and processes)
(iii) Financial manager : (business advisory, report financial activities, find sources of funding)
(iv) Executive Director : (technical services and operations- project development, project
management and other related processes)
(v) Head of campaign :(posters, presentations, booth preparation etc)

- Brainstorming : Identify needs, propose projects /ideas - to be presented in week 3
Design any technology according to current
needs at schools (teaching and learning tools,
teaching aids, study aids).
-to be presented in Week 2/3
Students should also include:

show that design processes are a series of planned steps to
solve a design problem
Should meet the needs of the end-user (customer,
students)
all characteristics and features will need to be identified.
-focus on aesthetics, comfortability, safety, ecological,
economic, social, ethical longevity, needs etc. in the aspect of
development processes
may consider the domestic and commercial setting
Project outcomes can be in a form of prototype / real object
