Feminist criticism
Exploring the notion of feminist criticism, Deborah Kellys music video is a perfect example. She
uncovers female traditional art, interprets her work so that it will not be ignored by males point of view,
and increases awareness of sexual politics of language and style and analyses things from her
perspective.
Deborah Kelly uncovers traditional female works by going beyond the means of crazy. She uses all
aspects of wilderness including animal faces, animalistic dancing and music. She replaces the females
body parts with animals to portray a sense that women are threatening, not as nurturing and nice as
they are portrayed to be. Like humans do in any environment of the wild, act, carefully and cautious of
lions, tigers and bears thats what it should be like before approaching a women rather than treating
them on how they look. The use of insects are also used as an emphasis that smaller animals are seen as
a bigger threat as they have fangs and stingers to defend themselves. This is also done to encourage a
level of awareness that men are to not be so careless and curious about the outer appearance of a
womans features because they are survivors too.
Kelly re-mythologises femininity, avoiding the stereotypes that constrain and demonise people for their
difference. She creates a new myth and exaggerates what women are expected of now days by
avoiding the stereotypes. She undertakes an animalistic approach to hide these differences and show
women for whom they are without distractions.
Kellys strategy is to embrace diversity: these creatures represent many female forms, thoughts and
experiences, and celebrate acceptance and freedom of expression. She uses sexual images to convey
this sense of freedom. That woman should have the right to be allowed to sleep with other males and
not be stereotyped as a slut. She also shows this idea through animalistic dressing women dont
necessarily have to be wearing a red dress with silver dime. She celebrates the acceptance of women to
all human kind, and proposes that women should be free of speech. The six breasts expresses that
women can show their private parts and that they should not have to cover their self-up if they dont
want to.
