b Overview of Battery and On-Board Electrical System - Passenger Car Model Series 2006
Procedure
1. Diagnosis Assistance System (DAS)
Use DAS to read out the last/last-but-one entry of the
bus keepawake unit recognition and compare the two
entries:
If fewer than four entries are identical, check the
relevant control units and replace them if
necessary.
If there are more than four entries, then the CAN
system is extremely unstable and the information
is not usable.
2. Prepare the vehicle
Before starting the test, all of the contacts, e.g. for
the hood, trunk lid, doors and glove box, must be
properly closed.
The vehicle must be locked.
The charge converter must be deactivated. To do
this, switch off the engine and turn the transmitter
key (A8/1) in the EIS [EZS] control unit (N73)
briefly to position 2 "Ignition ON" and then remove
the key.
The quiescent current cutout relay (N82/1k1)
must not open during the quiescent current test, so
both batteries must therefore have a voltage of at
least 12.2 V.
Notes
If functions continue to be active after "Ignition
OFF", e.g. low beam switched on, the control
unit responsible, e.g. the front SAM control unit
with fuse and relay module (N10/1), is entered
and the low beam function is set to "active"
status. Any battery discharge can thus be
explained very quickly and complicated
diagnosis is unnecessary.
In the case of gateway control units, always
check the associated CAN system too!

3. Measurement for presence of quiescent current at ground cable of on-board electrical system
battery (G1)
Perform the quiescent current test at the ground
cable of the on-board electrical system battery
(G1), e.g. using a current clamp (1) or a multimeter
looped in without breaking the circuit.
If the quiescent current < 50 mA:
Read out/erase fault memory and final
quiescent current measurement < 50 mA
If the quiescent current > 50 mA and
< 2.5 A....3 A:
A single component shows quiescent current.
Check all circuit 30 and 30g fuses at the right
instrument panel fuse box (F1/6), the left
instrument panel fuse box (F1/7), the front SAM
control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1)
and the rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay
module (N10/2) (e.g. by measuring the voltage
drop at the fuses, see Introduction, section
"Quiescent current test, general", item 3).
Quiescent current > 2.5 A....3 A:
Measure CAN activity
(see Introduction, section "Quiescent current
test, general, item 2)
The CAN voltage distributors are located under
the driver and front passenger seats (at the air
vent door), in the front passenger footwell and in
the cockpit.
