1 Context and motivations
Gas turbine blade are often relying on lm cooling
systems, which should provide thermal protection
over the blade surface. This kind of problem can be
modeled using the canonical case of a coolant jet dis-
charging in a crossow. In this case the temperature
eld behaves as a passive scalar transported by the
uid, and we neglect buoyancy effects in the uid
dynamics. The efciency of such a cooling systemis
therefore directly related to the turbulent mixing
properties. This particular conguration induces a
range of complex phenomena associated with the
jet structure. For numerical calculations to capture
the physical phenomena relevant to lm cooling
applications, it is necessary to include the effects in-
duced by : (i) the recirculation occurring at the inlet
of the short lm cooling hole and (ii) the turbulent
state of the main ow boundary layer. The rst point
requires including in the computational domain the
plenum feeding the hole. The second condition is
fullled by imposing a realistic turbulent ow at the
inow of the developing crossow.
2 Objectives and research plan
The student will be in charge to run highly re-
solved simulations on massive parallel platforms us-
ing a LES solver Charles
X
, developed at Stanford
and ISAE. For validation purposes, the exact same
geometry of a companion experiment will be used.
The experiment is currently carried out at Stanford
[2] and provides tri-dimensional velocity and con-
centration eld using recent MRI-based measure-
ment techniques. Preliminary simulations [1] have
shown very good agreement. The student is ex-
pected to develop post-processing tools (Python, C)
to characterize the scalar mixing, and in particular
extract and analyses the behavior of the different
terms in the scalar uxes budget, which is an essen-
tial step towards the development of new models. If
time allows compressible effects in subsonic condi-
tions at moderate Mach number (M=0.7 0.8) will
be analyzed.
