Chapters to prepare for CSAT
Do following chapters, in following sequence
Priority Topic Rajesh Chapter No.
high Linear equation 27 and 7
number system 1 to 6
%, profit loss, SI-CI 19, 20, 23 and 24
Speed time distance work 13 to 18 and 33
area volume perimeter 31, 32 (but first go through NCERTs)
clock calendar 25, 26
low* missing number series 34
data sufficiency 44
permutation combination probability 29, 30
geometry theory 35
*Low priority doesnt mean UPSC wont ask it. It means do these topics after allotting time to other high
priority topics for GS, reasoning, comprehension and maths first.
Chapters to avoid for CSAT
For the following topics, NCERT sufficient. Rajesh goes into many varieties that are not asked in CSAT.
Topic ignore Rajesh ch No.__ but prepare from here
Quadratic equation 28 Class 8 chapter 9 and 14.
coordinate geometry 38 NCERT class10 chapter7
Completely ignore these chapters (Dont even prepare from NCERT or anywhere else)
trigonometry 38 He has separate chapter for height and distance. This chapter deals with pure
trigonometry which is not asked in CSAT (although important for SSC and CDS)
true discount 21 not part of upto Class X syllabus, not asked in previous UPSC exams (from 1995
onwards) therefore, ignore for CSAT.
bankers
discount
22 same as above
High priority Chapters
Linear Equations
First solve chapter 27 then chapter 7.
Chapter 27 linear equation
- Understand the consistency system given on first page of this chapter.
- then solve all the questions in illustration and exercises
- you may avoid following type of questions because no asked in UPSC

o Q.14 in Exercise1
o Q1 on Exercise2
Chapter 7: Word problems based on numbers
Focus on digital reversal problems and age related problems.
Basics, Number system
He covered block#1 topics under Chapter 1 to 6. As such go through every chapter and observe the
introductory portion. But at the same time, not everything is important. Focus on following area:
CH HIGH PRIORITY TOPIC
1 - Divisibility tests.
- basic number theory on page9
- Exercise2
2 HCF-LCM exercise 2
3 decimal fractions HCF and LCM
4 Arranging surds in decreasing order.
6 - table on page 84
- all sums in Exercise 2
IGNORE/low priority (Because not asked so far)
4 - Finding square root of decimal numbers.
- how to calculate cube root
- multiplication of rationalization factor
5 fast track technique 1, 2 and 3 because not asked so far.
Percentages
He covers this topics from ch19 to 24
chapter focus
19 - Technique No. 5 to 13. (although once you understand concept, you can even
solve without those formulas)
- unconventional questions within exercise 2
20 Profit loss Understand technique No. 2,3 and 4 about dishonest seller.
Most of the remaining questions can be solved without mugging formulas. if you
learn the concept from this article
21 simple interest Most of the questions can be solved without mugging formulas. if you learn the
concept from this article 22 compound
interest
Ignore
ch21: true discount
ch22: bankers discount
Ratio Proportion Variation
9 - Example 13, 22 and 23. UPSC been asking this a lot.
- solve all the sums under exercise2
11 Just solve the sums directly using the technique explained in this article: click me.

Speed time distance work (STDW)
Chapter 12 to 18; and ch33.
Do everything, ignore nothing.
Data interpretation
Chapter 39 to 43.
ch. what to focus
39 Ignore the lengthy calculation tables. theyre important for bank but UPSC doesnt ask such
lengthy calculations
42 ignore the line graphs sets that require long division and percentage calculation. UPSC
doesnt ask lengthy calculations
40, 41 and
43
40 pie chart, 41 bar chart and 43 mixed graph all three have regularly been asked in UPSC.
so, do everything, ignore nothing.
Beyond this, UPSC also asks some odd graphs, Venn Diagrams and even statistics under data interpretation.
Read original study plan on how to approach those topics.
Low priority
Area-Volume-Perimeter (AVP)
Rajesh Verma alone is insufficient youve to go through the respective NCERT chapters. (refer to the original
study plan).
ch what to focus
31 - Important: Technique 7. mugup the pathway formula. it has been asked twice in past UPSCs
- Ignore technique no.1 to 6 because you can derive them via concepts in the exam itself.
Dont burden your brain with such formulas for every subtype of question. but do solve the
examples given below them.
32 - you may ignore frustrum. so far not asked.
- Ignore technique 1 to 7 because its simply percentage increase. You can derive it in exam
itself. Dont burden your brain with such formulas for every subtype of question. But do solve
the examples given below them.
Clock calendar
ch what to focus
25 - Focus the MCQ related to angle between hour and minute hand.
- UPSC hasnt asked other type of questions since 1995- like fast / slow clock related questions.
UPSC *may* ask them under reasoning, but if concept is not going in your head right now,
then dont bother. Focus energy on some other topic.
26 Understand the concept from this article click me then solve all questions given in chapter 26.
Permutation Combination Probability
First understand the concepts from Mrunal.org/aptitude#138 about how to solve these problems without
formula. Then solve chapter 29 and 30. Do everything, ignore nothing.

Height and distance
First learn short cut techniques to memorize trig. values from here: mrunal.org/aptitude#110
Then do all the sums given in chapter 37.
