TESIS DYNAware Cooperation with IAV:
Next Generation of the Thermodynamic
Engine Simulation Software
TESIS DYNAware and IAV Automotive Engineering present the second
generation of the thermodynamic real-time simulation software DYNA4
Engine Themos. The new version integrates the core competences of both
companies: comprehensive experience from numerous customer projects
as well as simulation know-how acquired over many years. For the
development of engine control units (ECUs), DYNA4 Engine Themos
fulfills not only the stipulations of hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) applications
but as well the challenging requirements of function development. This
regards mainly to the accurate representation of the entire engine process,
so the models can be used in the early stages of control unit function
calibration. The robust and fast-simulating engine models are part of the
process driven simulation environment DYNA4 and thus allow the
continuous application of DYNA4 Engine Themos from function
development to HIL tests in real-time.
We know from our experience in numerous engine and control unit
engineering projects that function developers do not only depend on the
correct behavior of controlled systems but a high precision representation
of reality becomes more and more important. In the new DYNA4 Engine
Themos we emphasized great importance to this aspect Kurt Blumen-
rder, President and CEO at IAV, explains. Furthermore, the reliability
and stability of the simulation environment is a key factor for the financial
and time-saving benefits of the simulation, adds Dr. Cornelius
Chucholowski, General Manager at TESIS DYNAware.

The thermodynamical model from IAV and TESIS DYNAware has proven
itself over the years for the testing of electronic control units for modern
diesel and spark ignition engines. The entire simulation process of
combustion engines thereby obeys the laws of thermodynamics. High

accuracy is one important requirement for testing and development of
modern ECUs, e. g. through simulation of the crank angle resolved
cylinder pressure. In DYNA4 Engine Themos a physical model of the
combustion process and gas dynamics allows for effects of variable valve
lift and timing, multiple injections, exhaust gas recirculation and boost
pressure control as well as exhaust gas aftertreatment. All engine model
versions are integrated in a simulation environment with driveline and
driver models, so that typical driving cycles can be simulated realistically
and then analyzed. For any application it is of great importance that
DYNA4 Engine Themos is based on fast and robust model algorithms and
also delivers reliable results an extraordinary challenge in regard to the
amount of detail and complexity of thermodynamic simulation models.
DYNA4 Engine Themos is not only used for the development and testing
of ECUs, it is also suitable for the selection and optimization of engine
components with the aim to reduce fuel consumption or in combination
with additional model components for the simulation of hybrid vehicles.
All models are fully implemented in Matlab/Simulink. The open and
modular architecture makes it easy to incorporate ones own model
components and allows adaption of the software to satisfy customer
requirements.
TESIS DYNAware
TESIS DYNAware is the independent expert team for vehicle simulation in
real-time. For more than 15 years the automotive industry has been
employing TESIS DYNAwares simulation models for controller and
component development.
DYNA4, the virtual vehicle for test drives in the laboratory, contains high
precision modules for simulation of vehicle dynamics (veDYNA), traffic
environment (veDYNA Traffic), engine dynamics (enDYNA), and brake
hydraulics (RT BrakeHydraulics). DYNA4 supports the entire development
process of controller and components from model-based design to
software-in-the-loop applications (SIL) on the PC to hardware-in-the-loop
tests (HIL). Additional consulting and customization by experienced
simulation teams ensure optimum results even for specialized simulation
tasks.
TESIS DYNAware is headquartered in Munich and is part of the TESIS
group of companies.
IAV
Employing over 3000 staff across the globe, IAV is one of the leading
providers of engineering services to the automotive industry. The core
areas of competence include powertrain, electronics and vehicle
development. As a result, IAV can provide its clients with production-ready
solutions for the entire vehicle on a one-stop shop basis. IAV engages in
its own primary research, performs its own advanced development
activities and works on an interdisciplinary basis. In addition to its
development centers in Berlin, Gifhorn and Chemnitz, IAV also operates
from other locations in Europe, Asia as well as North and South America.
Clients of the company include all major automobile manufacturers and
component suppliers.
