Course Description: Emphasis on use of three dimensional media, exploration of materials and
introduction to some technical processes relative to contemporary 3-D Design.
Course Objectives:
By the end of this course, students will:
• Students will learn fundamental construction and process problem solving techniques
• Students will learn and experiment with ways of organizing 3- dimensional visual elements
(shape, line, volume, texture, etc…) in interesting and dynamic ways.
• Students will know and use basic vocabulary and terminology.
• Students will be able to form an informed opinion and critique work.
Required Materials:
8 1/2 x 11 inch notebook- good quality, no news print- bring to 2nd class
You will be responsible for purchasing your own supplies from the bookstore, Asels, Utrecht, and/or Home
Depot. Asel’s gives student discounts so remind them. Bring all needed supplies to class. With each project
you will be instructed what to purchase and when.

Tool room demo/ rules of sculpture room.
Introduce Project 1: Line and Volume: project.
Introduction to the object/create vocabulary list definitions.

April 29th Present final project for critique and presentation. Sketchbooks Due.
Grading Policy and Assignments
All projects, homework, and sketchbooks are due at the start of class on assigned days. All projects must
be presented for critiques. Take notes in order to get feed back as I do not make notes on work being turned
back. If you have questions about your grades do not wait until the end of the semester to ask. Ask at the
time.
2. QUANTITY OF WORK
How much time has a student put into the production of the work?
How much time has been put into the research and preparation of the work?
How much has one followed through with his idea and what resolution has been made
after critique.
4. ATTITUDE
Has the student found the problem challenging in an inquisitive and open-minded way?
Does the student ask questions, offer comments, listen and focus her attention?
Has the student participated in the critique in a constructive way?
Aside from all of these categories, I do take into account various learning styles and talents. Shown
improvement can affect your grade and I will place more consideration on work at the end of the semester
over that of the beginning. Those with talent, ability and experience will be expected to challenge
themselves through effort, a unique concept, and problem solving.
Assignments will be given a grade after they are turned in based on the evaluation categories. Work hard
and do your best with each assignment. Productivity is very important. The more you do and see the faster
your skills will increase. Production and productivity is the only way you can visually demonstrate the
knowledge and skills you have learned. I am looking for involvement more than perfection.
3 major projects and class homework will be given throughout the semester. Homework should be
completed before the class begins on the day the assignment is due. Getting behind will only make things
more difficult as the semester progresses.
Make sure you understand what the objectives are for all of the projects. If you are not sure, don’t hesitate
to ask. I will be glad to talk to you regarding any class related problems.
Projects will be 85% of your final grade.
Sketchbook/Notebook
Keep your sketchbooks informed and up to date with what is going on in class. This includes notes,
handouts, homework, and project progress and documentation.
Take notes information is covered rapidly and likely to be forgotten by the next week.
Put additional print material into your notebook that are relevant to the course such as articles, photos or
other work, examples of ideas, etc. will be helpful to me in determining some of your progress and
commitment that might not be so easily seen in your class work.
Sketchbooks should contain: class notes, research, life references, ideas, cutout scribbles, questions,
critique notes, etc. It will be collected 3 times throughout the semester and graded. Those 3 grades will be
averaged for your overall sketchbook grade.
Your Sketchbook/notebook will be 15% of your final grade.
Only work done for the current semester and this particular class will count toward your class grade.
Attendance
Attendance IS mandatory and expected. Please be on time, and ready to work (materials out and projects
ready to critique). This is a studio class. It meets only once a week, so class time is valuable. Class
participation is essential and noted on a daily basis; this is NOT a correspondence class. Arriving late and
leaving early will negatively impact your ability to participate and learn.
I will take role at the beginning of each class. After 3 absences your final grade will drop. For every 3
missed classes your final grade will be lowered one full letter grade. (Ex. if you made an overall B then
you would get a C as your final semester grade) Critiques are an important learning tool and are
mandatory. No projects will be accepted late without an official Doctor’s note.
Should you miss a class, please contact fellow classmates or me ASAP so you do not get behind. You may
do so by email. Please do not hesitate to discuss with me any questions, concerns or problems you may
have about his course during the semester. If you don’t feel comfortable approaching me in class, then fell
free to contact me and we can set up a time to meet. Please put UTD student in your email title.
Students enrolled in classes in the art barn will have access to the rooms and equipment whenever there is
not another class meeting in there. If a class is meeting in the room, class students have priority. The
computer labs and Sculpture lab tools and equipment are only available to students that have approval from
their instructor and must observe all rules of the lab. Doors must be closed when the last one leaves a lab
or tool room. The building is open 8am to 10 pm M-F. Sat/ 8am to 8pm and it will be closed Sunday.
Please clean up after yourselves. If you leave materials and artwork in the studio not properly stored, it
will be thrown away. There is no food or drink allowed in the Media Lab or 1.106. Please be observant.
Do not take equipment from the Art Building. It will be considered stolen in such cases. If you find
equipment that is broken or not working properly please report it someone in the office or your instructor.
Pass/fail
For you to elect to participate in the pass/fail program you must follow normal UTD policy procedures.
This course of action must be decided early on. This class is not an ‘easy A’. Follows these suggestions in
earnest and work hard. You may only declare pass/fail, credit/no credit if you are not an art and
performance or ATEC major.
Incomplete Grade Policy
As per university policy, incomplete grades will be granted only for work unavoidably missed at the
semester’s end and only if 70% of the course work has been completed. An incomplete grade must be
resolved within eight (8) weeks from the first day of the subsequent long semester. If the required work to
complete the course and to remove the incomplete grade is not submitted by the specified deadline, the
incomplete grade is changed automatically to a grade of F.
Academic Integrity
The faculty expects from its students a high level of responsibility and academic honesty. Because the
value of an academic degree depends upon the absolute integrity of the work done by the student for that
degree, it is imperative that a student demonstrate a high standard of individual honor in his or her
scholastic work.
Scholastic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, statements, acts or omissions related to applications for
enrollment or the award of a degree, and/or the submission as one’s own work or material that is not one’s
own. As a general rule, scholastic dishonesty involves one of the following acts: cheating, plagiarism,
collusion and/or falsifying academic records. Students suspected of academic dishonesty are subject to
disciplinary proceedings.
Plagiarism, especially from the web, from portions of papers for other classes, and from any other source is
unacceptable and will be dealt with under the university’s policy on plagiarism (see general catalog for
details). This course will use the resources of turnitin.com, which searches the web for possible plagiarism
and is over 90% effective.
Disability Services
The goal of Disability Services is to provide students with disabilities educational opportunities equal to
those of their non-disabled peers. Disability Services is located in room 1.610 in the Student Union. Office
hours are Monday and Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; Tuesday and Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.;
and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
