1 Course Code and Name BMM4623 Mechanical System Design 2 Semester and Year Taught Semester 7 Year 4 3 Program Level/Category Degree/Mechanical /Automotive 4 Unit 3 Credits 5 Prerequisite BMM3623 Mechanical Design 6 Teaching Methods Lecture: 1 unit (1 hour X 14 weeks) Tutorial: 0 unit (0 hour X 14 weeks) Project: 2 units (6 hours X 9 weeks) 7 Course Synopsis This course prepares a detailed comprehensive design project considering the different stages of their design, manufacturing and assembly. The students will learn about project management, communication, documentation, working in teams, design methodology. Design of mechanical engineering systems components, including problem definition, analysis, and synthesis, and develop a computational as well as the physical model of their design. The projects challenge students to apply the knowledge and skills they learned throughout their degree to real-world problems. Application of the design process to solve an engineering problem which includes interdisciplinary parameters such as human factors, engineering economy, safety, environmental, and societal aspects of their design, etc. The students work in small teams under the close supervision of faculty members. Each team produces detailed drawings, comprehensive specifications, a presentation, and a prototype of the proposed design. They also write design reports and prepare posters describing their work. All reports are expected to meet professional standards. 8 Course Outcomes By the end of semester, students should be able to: CO1: design for a complex mechanical system and components; CO2 analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of information to provide effective conclusions; CO3: write an effective reports and design documentation, make effective presentations, and receive a clear directions; CO4: function effectively as an individual, and as a member/leader. CO5: apply appropriate techniques and modern engineering tools for prediction and modelling of complex mechanical system. 9 Assessment Methods Assessments CO1 CO2 CO3 CO4 CO5 Distribution Concept Design Presentation

Week Lesson Outcomes CO (Weightage) Bloom Taxonomy Delivery Assessment 1-2 Introduction to projects and course structure Lecture Project Team Selection, Project Selection, Design process
1(1) Lecture Task Assignments: Each team assigns detailed responsibilities for each member as stated in the Project Plan. Each team member details the specific tasks that they expect to perform in support of their project and team. The individual task assignments are then integrated into a single group plan (not just cut and pasted together). Each person must understand their responsibilities and the responsibilities of the other team members. 1(1) Understanding Lecture, Cooperative Learning/ Laboratory Problem Statement: Each team submits a problem statement for their selected project (three pages, maximum). The problem statement should clearly define the scope and expected content of the project. It should also address the novelty, customer needs, specifications, constraints, evaluation criteria, market, goals, etc. 1(2) Understanding Lecture, Cooperative Learning/ Laboratory
3
Project Plan: Each team submits a work plan for the completion of their project. Identify the individual members responsible for activities related to the group management, design partition, and deliverables. Include a timeline with critical dates. A Gantt chart is a useful model. 1(2) 2(2) 5(2) Understanding Lecture, Cooperative Learning/ Laboratory Project/Oral Presentation/ Report Conceptual Designs: Each team presents at least 5 of the most feasible concepts developed for the solution of their project. The presentation of each concept should be self-contained so that it should reasonably be able to understand it. For each concept include: 1. Descriptive name (e.g. Folding Chair Design and not Design 1) 2. Brief description in sentence form. 3. Descriptive sketches sufficient to explain the concept. Label all important parts, views, and directions. 4. If the concept is used in multiple positions (e.g. open and closed) show a sketch for each. Hand drawn sketches that are scanned in clearly are OK. 5. Itemize the advantages and disadvantages of each design (below each sketch if possible). 6. Use the PMI (plus/minus/interesting) classification in list form. 1(2) 2(2) 5(2) Synthesis Lecture, Cooperative Learning/ Laboratory Market research and marketing, industrial design 1(2) Understanding Lecture, Cooperative Learning/ Laboratory 5 of 6 BMM 4623 Mechanical System Design Teaching Plan Rev. 01A
