Alinta Asset Management
The Australian Standard for Pipelines Gas and
Liquid Petroleum (AS 2885) sets out requirements
for the design and construction, welding, operation
and maintenance and feld pressure testing of gas
and liquid petroleum pipelines.
Ed Gaykema is the Risk and Technical Compliance Manager for Alinta
Asset Management, which operates gas pipelines and gas networks
throughout Australia. Ed also chairs Standards Australias Technical
Committee responsible for AS 2885.3, relating to the operation and
maintenance of gas and petroleum pipelines.
The Standards we work with in this feld have led to innovations in
techniques for welding, improved construction times for pipelines and
better productivity. They have resulted in safe, effcient and reliable
pipeline infrastructure capable of transporting essential energy products
over long distances to consumers.
AS 2885 is based on fundamental engineering principles which can be
applied anywhere in the world.
Standards have also been important in the feld of pipeline operations
and maintenance. We have introduced an integrity management or risk
management approach, which has enabled companies to develop their
own risk-based integrity management plans applicable to their own
operations. It gives them more fexibility in their maintenance programs
which can provide cost savings, while maintaining quality, Ed says.
The AS 2885 suite of Standards has also helped harmonise regulation
across jurisdictions in Australia.
A typical user of a Standard in this feld is a gas or petroleum transmission
or distribution company. They know that the Standards may be called up
in an Act, regulation or licensing arrangement in a particular State or
Territory, so they build their whole compliance regime around the Standard.
All of the AS 2885 Committees bring together, on neutral territory, people
who are regulators, working for pipeline constructors, welders, pipeline
owners, and so on. A lot of expertise and history goes into the development
of the Standards and people take this knowledge back to their own
companies or agencies.
They are all keen to produce a Standard that will be the best for their
industry, whether it applies to natural gas, or liquid petroleum, and which
helps the industry transport a whole range of hydrocarbon fuids safely
and effciently. Properly working pipelines make a big contribution to
productivity and proftability.
