Mini Project
Drilling Rig Analysis

Project 1

1. You are planning to drill a well with a rig where 10 lines are strung between
travelling block and crown block. Maximum anticipated drilling depth is
10,000 ft. The drill string consists of 4.5 in (20 lb/ft) drill pipes and 7 in. (120
lb/ft) drill collars. The drill string design requires that the drill collar length
must be 10% of the total drill string length. Company policy requires the use
of a safety factor of 2.0 in all rig load design calculations. Consider the
following two cases:
a. No mud in the hole
b. Hole is filled with mud (15 ppg).
Determine the minimum drilling line size (i.e. smallest diameter possible that
can be safely used with this rig (Check for drilling depth 2000, 4000, 6000,
8000, 10000) in each case.

13/4 5.67 306,000
17/8 6.5 348,000

Now suppose while drilling, the drill string gets stuck. The derrick is capable
of supporting a maximum equivalent derrick load of 500,000 lbf, the drilling
line has strength of 43,800 lbf, and the strength of drillpipe in tension is
396,000 lbf. How hard can the driller pull trying to free the stuck pipe?

2. One of the two types of drilling bits used to drill the well in question 1 has to
be run into the hole at depth 10,000 ft., bit X or bit Y. Select the bit to drill
from 10,000 ft downwards. The drilling rate equation is the same for both bits

3. Suppose now that the intended well looks like the one shown in the figure
below having the following information:
Surface System Information: 3 cylindrical pits having 8.0 diameter and 10.0
height. Two pits have 72 and the 3
rd
has 60 height of mud in cylinders.
Mud weight = 15 ppg; DP (20 lbf/ft); DC (120 lbf/ft)

a) Determine the total mud volume of the circulating system (Actual mud
volume in pit + annular volume + Drill string volume).
b) Suppose the total available mud is the volume of mud present in the
cylindrical pits. Determine whether the mud in the pit is sufficient for the
circulation or not?

Now, consider two types of pump: triplex pump and duplex pump; each has
6.5 liner and 12 strokes length, 50 cycles / min and 95% efficiency. Now
consider two cases. In first case one triplex pump is used and in second case
one duplex pump is used for pumping mud downhole. Calculate the
following for each case.

a. Surface to bit Circulation Time
b. Bottoms Up time
Which pump is more suitable on the basis of total circulation time?

4. Force Analysis & Buckling
For the well shown in Figure 1,
a) Determine the hook load using Archimedes law.
b) Determine the hook load using the pressure method buoyancy effect.
c) Draw the axial force vs. depth in the drill string starting from the bottom
of the drill collar to the surface.
d) Draw the stability force vs. depth in the same graph as in c)
e) Determine whether the given dill collar length in Figure is enough to
avoid buckling.
