III. Learning Experiences

TEACHERS ACTIVITY PUPILS ACTIVITY

A. Preparatory Activities

1. Mental Computation/Drill

(Teacher will let the pupils to
solve this word problem.)

What is the area of a rectangular lot
whose length is 12 meters and the
width is 8 meters.

2. Review

(Teacher will let the pupils to
complete the table)

Length Width Area
1. 12cm 11cm
2. 17m 204m
2
3. 10m 230m
2

A= L X W
A = 12m. X 8m.
A= 96m
2

1. A= L X W
A = 12cm X 11cm
A = 132cm
2

3. Motivation

(Teacher will show a picture of a
four sided object. Teacher will let
the children to observe and
identify the picture as it shows.)

Ask:
What do you call a quadrilateral
with two pairs of parallel sides?

B. Developmental Activities
1. Presentation

(Teacher will present a word
problem on a manila paper.)

Roy planted vegetables in his
backyard to prevent soil erosion. His
vegetables garden is a parallelogram.
It has a base of 6 meters and height of
4 meters. What is the area of the
vegetables garden?

Illustration:

Figure 1.
h= 4m

b= 6m

Figure 2.

2. A = L X W
204m
2
=17m X W
204m
2
=17m .W
17m . 17m.
W = 34m.

3. A = L X W
230m
2
= L X 10m
230m
2
= 10m.L
10m. 10m.
L = 23m.

Parallelogram

a. Teacher will cut along the dotted
line as shown in figure 11.
b. Teacher will paste the dotted
line cut out as shown in figure
2.

Ask:
What figure is formed now?

Class, therefore the are of a
parallelogram is the same as the area
of a rectangle.

Again, who can give the formula
of area of a rectangle?

Yes, Very good! Area is equal to
length X width.

What about the formula of area
of parallelogram?

Yes, Very good! Area is equal to
base X height.

Okay class, since we get now the
formula on how to find the area of a
parallelogram, let us find out the area
of a vegetables garden using the
formula of a parallelogram, A=bh.

Given: b = 6m.
h = 4m
A = ?

A = b X h
A = 6m X 4m
A = 24m
2

Again, what is the area of a
vegetables garden?

Very good! The area of a
vegetables garden is 24m
2

Class, take note that in the
formula of the area of parallelogram b

Rectangle

A = L X W or A=lw

A = b X h or A=bh

or base is present as length and h or
height becomes the length of a
rectangle and that is why it is said
that in finding the area of
parallelogram and rectangle is similar.

C. Activity
1. Teacher will group the class
into 3 groups.
2. Standards to follow in a
group activity:
a) Each member should
participate in their respective
group.
b) Each group will answer their
activity within 5 minutes.
c) Leader of the group will be
the one to present their
group output.
3.Teacher will distribute
cartoons with activity cards.
4. Pupils will read, understand
and answer the problem
carefully.

A garden is in the shape of a
parallelogram, with a base of 12m.
and height of 7.8m.

Things to do:
1. Draw a parallelogram based on
the problem. (by pairs)
2. Name the base and the height.
Emphasize the dotted line is
the height.
3. Cut the dotted line and paste it
on the other side of the
parallelogram.

Guide Questions:
1. In your activity what
quadrilateral is formed?

2. If the length is the base and the
width becomes the height, how
do you find the area of the
parallelogram?

3. Solve the area of a garden.

Rectangle

Use the formula A=bXh or
A=bh

2. Fixing Skills

(teacher will let the pupils to get a
scratch paper and solve the
following figure. )

1.

8cm

4cm

2.
b= 16m

A =80m
2
h=?

3. Generalization

How do you find the area of a
parallelogram?

Yes, very good! The area of
parallelogram is the product of the
base and the height.
Given: b = 12m
h = 7.8m
A = ?

Solution:
A = bXh
A = 12m x 7.8m
A = 93.6m
1+1
A = 93.6m
2

A = bXh
A = 8cm x 4cm
A = 32cm
1+1
A = 32cm
2

A = bXh
80m
2
= 16m x h
80m
2
= 16m.h
16m 16m
h = 5m
2-1
h = 5m

by using the formula of a
parallelogram, A = b X h

D. Application
Find the area of parallelogram

1.

20cm

25cm

2. The area of a parallelogram is
84 square meters and the height
is 12m. What is the base?

IV. Evaluation
Complete the table below.

base height Area
1. 9cm 15cm
2. 12cm 84m
2
3. 13cm 7.4cm
4. 2.5m 62.5m
2
5. 30m 25m

V. Assignment:
Find the area, base or height of
the parallelogram.

1. b = 10cm
h = 6.8cm
A = ?

2. b = 13.5m
h = 16m
A = ?

A = bXh
A = 25cm x 20cm
A = 500cm
1+1
A = 500cm
2

A = bXh
84m
2
= b (12m)
84m
2
= 12m.b
12m 12m
h = 7m
2-1
h = 7m

3. b = ?
h = 5m
A = 65m
2

4. b = 11cm
h = ?
A = 126cm
2

5. b = 9.5m
h = 12.3m
A = ?
