Rotating your car's tires is like going
to the dentist. Nobody likes it, but it's
something that should be done.
Depending on where and when it hap-
pens, getting a flat tire is similar to teeth
issues. If a tire goes flat in your drive-
way, it's like a small cavity that has to be
filled. It's annoying but not that big a
deal. If a tire blows in rush-hour traffic,
you're talking full-blown root canal, and
who wants that? Here are some tips to
prevent tire decay.
Most newer model cars are front-
wheel drive, and tire rotation becomes
important because the front tires wear
faster than the rear. The reason for this
is simple: When you make any kind of
full turn in traffic or follow the curve of
the road, more of the vehicle's weight is
placed on the edges of the tires. This
especially affects the front tires because
these are ones that are actually turning
while the rear tires stay in a straight line.
This turning causes the edges of the tires
to wear over time. If your tires wear
unevenly, you're suspectible to spotty
braking and poor handling-real
toothaches, er, headaches.
Another important aspect to tire rota-
tion is the eventual replacement of your
tires. If you don't rotate your tires, you'll
replace them two at a time, and that
means always having uneven wear on
your wheels. If you replace your tires
four at a time-and keep them rotated
regularly-you'll have even wear on all
four.
How often should you rotate your
tires? Well, that obviously varies based
on the amount of miles you drive each
day. Unfortunately, for some drivers,
you may need to rotate your tires more
often than you visit the dentist for a
checkup. A rotation is often recom-
mended at about 7,500 miles. That's
often the time for an oil change, so do
some multi-tasking and get both jobs
done at once. Check your owner's man-
ual to see when it recommends tire rota-
tions for your particular model.
How to have your tires rotated has
been subject to debate similar to the dis-
course over the merits of fluoride.
Again, check your owner's manual to
see if there's a specific method recom-
mended for your model of vehicle. If
there isn't, there are two basic ways for
front-wheel drive tire rotation, and both
are as simple as flossing. One method is
to move the front driver's side tire to the
back driver's side and the back driver's
side to the front passenger's side. The
front passenger's side then moves to the
back passenger's side and the back
passenger's side to the front driver's
side. Another method is to swap the
front driver's side and the rear passen-
ger's side tires with each other, and then
swap the front passenger's side tire with
the rear driver's side. Either method
seems to help the tires achieve more
even tread wear,and that's what you're
after.
Keeping your tires rotated on a reg-
ular basis can prevent an ill-timed flat
tire and that can prevent grinding and
gnashing your teeth-which is a whole
different dental problem.

There's enough not to like about winter
without having your car break down on the
road. Take these steps while the weather is
warmer so your body temperature doesn't rise
because of car problems when the tempera-
tures drop.
Manual labor
Break out your owner's manual, grab an
iced tea (remember, you're doing this while it's
still warm out) and find a comfy chair. Now,
read your manual and make sure you've been
doing all the recommended maintenance to
this point. Get the things done that you've neg-
lected and make an appointment to have any-
thing done that's required in the immediate
future. Anything that's a problem now (hard
starts, stalling, rough idling) can be exacer-
bated by hazardous winter conditions.
An ounce of prevention
Do a little investigative snooping under
the hood to prevent trouble before it starts.
Check your belts and hoses for wear. Make
sure all your fluids are topped off, including
the all-important windshield washer reservoir.
Take the bite out of winter driving
When was the last time your anti-freeze was
changed? If you don't know, it may be past
time. Don't forget the battery. Remove your ter-
minals and use warm water and baking soda
to clean your battery's posts. There's nothing
worse than having everything mechanically
sound only to find your vehicle won't start
because the battery is dead.
Wiper not wiping?
It's a blizzard outside, but you're warm
and toasty in your smoothly running car. Stay
warm by making sure your windshield wipers
are in good shape before the blizzard.
There's nothing worse-not to mention danger-
ous-than having to stop every five minutes, get
out of your car and brush the elements off
your windshield because you're wipers aren't
working right. Check the rubber and make
sure there are no cracks or worn spots on the
blade. Make sure the blade adheres to the
windshield as it moves. If it doesn't, you may
need to adjust the arm for a more snug fit. To
ensure your wipers aren't overly taxed when
snow and ice hit, stash a brush and ice
scraper in the car to get as much debris off the
windshield as possible before you begin driv-
ing.
Tired tires
The importance of having quality tires to
handle whatever road conditions winter may
hold can't be overstated. Make sure your
tread depth is adequate to handle the condi-
tions for your area. Look at your tires and
inspect them for tread life and uneven wear-
ing. Check for cuts and nicks. While you're
down there, check each tire's air pressure.
Expect the unexpected
You've done everything right, but the pos-
sibility still exists you'll be left stranded some
cold winter night. Be prepared by having
some essentials to see you through until help
arrives. Clean the junk out of your trunk and
put in the following: flares, a flashlight, jumper
cables, a shovel, blankets and sand for trac-
tion. Have some non-perishable food in your
glove box.
Don't go
Finally, if the weather is too bad, don't
drive in it. Break out your favorite magazine
or newspaper, grab some hot chocolate and
find a comfy chair. The weather will get bet-
ter...eventually.

"What are you going to all of that trou-
ble for?" your sister demands to know after
she hears you making an appointment with
a service station to have your tires inspect-
ed. Unlike your sister who lives in the
Sunshine State, you live up north, where
winters can be harsh. In order to ensure you
get where you need to this winter, you are
having your vehicle winterized, starting with
the tires.
Good tires can make all of the differ-
ence on treacherous winter roads. In order
to prepare your vehicle for the rough weath-
er ahead, you must make sure your tires are
properly inflated. Tires lose about a psi of
air pressure every month and every time the
air temperature drops about 10 degrees.
Vehicles with under-inflated tires do not han-
dle well, especially on icy roads. They also
increase wear and tear and use more gas
(and who needs that with the price of gas
these days).
If your vehicle is brand new, you may
not have to worry much about the tire pres-
sure. It probably came equipped with a tire
pressure monitor that will inform you when
the pressure has dropped below a certain
point. If you have an older vehicle, you will
definitely need to keep an eye on the tire
pressure and have your tires checked regu-
larly.
You also need to keep an eye on the
tread depth. The more worn and shallow the
tread on your tires, the less grip you will
have on the road. Depending upon where
you live and how treacherous the roads
become in the winter, you might want to con-
sider switching to winter tires. Designed
specifically for icy roads, these will provide
you with superior grip. Keep in mind that
you will need to replace all four tires.
Should you do just the back two, you will
compromise your grip and your safety. To
ensure this does not happen, some tire deal-
ers refuse to sell consumers fewer than four
tires, unless they need a single replacement
winter tire.
It is important that you winterize your
vehicle. Start with the tires and work your
way up. The better prepared your car is for
winter, the safer you will be when out and
about.

Mary 92, known as The Bingo Queen
Mary is a social butterfly and
the family recognized that she
was not functioning on her own
like she used to. Her daughters
researched private home care,
discovered Comfort Keepers and
made the call.
Comfort Keepers caregiver,
Lulrene, provided support and
assistance to bolster Marys
confidence enabling her to
continue her daily routines for
more than a year. Mary loves
people and everyone she meets
becomes her friend.
During Marys move to a new
residence, a Comfort Keepers
caregiver entertained Mary while
family and movers packed,
unpacked and recreated her
apartment. That evening, Mary
went to an ice cream social in her
new home, with new friends and is
so socially active that she is hard to
reach by phone these days.
It was Comfort Keepers
pleasure to have cared for Mary,
our wonderful senior.

BY STATE SUPERINTENDENT TONY EVERS
AND MEQUON-THIENSVILLE DISTRICT
ADMINISTRATOR DEMOND MEANS
We joined together in April to work on the
most important issue facing education in our
state: closing the achievement gap.
While Wisconsin has had some outstanding
academic results over the years overall high
achievement on the ACT college admissions
exams and among the top states for graduation
rates we also have some of the worst achieve-
ment gaps in the nation for students of color. All
achievement gaps are troubling, and we have
gaps for economically disadvantaged students,
students with disabilities, and English Language
Learners as well. But our deepest concern, and
the focus of the State Superintendents Task
Force on Wisconsins Achievement Gap, is on
the states race-based achievement gaps.
We brought together 12 teachers and five
principals from public, choice, and charter
schools throughout the state to work on the
achievement gap issue. These successful educa-
tors were from schools where the achievement
gap between students of color and white stu-
dents was closing, and the achievement of stu-
dents of color was growing at a higher rate than
the state average. They found common ground
in the hard work they do every day to help all
children reach their full potential. Many of their
recommendations revolve around the impor-
tance of relationships: between educator and
student, and among adults, as well as honoring
cultures that are not our own.
The strategies and best practices advanced
in the Promoting Excellence for All report and
website are from educators, for educators. The
strategies span four broad categories: effective
instruction, student-teacher relationships, family
and community engagement, and school and
instructional leadership. The four focus areas
are based on school improvement and achieve-
ment gap research from the past two decades
so they may be recognizable to those following
this research. None-the-less, these strategies are
powerful tools for individual educators, and
every school in the state can benefit from using
one or more of these ideas. From the Angel List
and Focused Events to Cultural Competency
and Relationship Building, they are all tried and
tested. They work. They make a difference for
students. Guest Editorial on the Achievement
Gap - Page 2
As educators, we made a commitment
when we first walked into our classrooms. That
commitment was to reach every kid. We didnt
make a commitment to reach 75 percent of the
students. The achievement gap has major impli-
cations, not only for individual students, but also
for our states social and economic future.
Simply, the achievement gap is morally repre-
hensible. If we truly believe in the principle of
equality and opportunity, our children deserve
that chance through education. We call for
accountability. Yet, an overall achievement level
isnt truly accountable when there are gaps for
certain student groups. And, if we want to
advance Wisconsins economy, we need all of
our students to graduate college and career
ready. When one in four Hispanic and
American Indian students drop out, and one in
three African-American students drop out from
our schools each year, thats way too much lost
opportunity. We need all students to succeed.
We know that alone, the strategies the task
force is advancing will not close the gaps. These
are changes of heart and mind and will be the
most difficult to navigate. But, if we follow our
moral compasses, we can change. We have
confidence that the Promoting Excellence for All
website, and learning modules that will follow,
will tap into the core nature of educators. They
entered the field to work with children because
they care.
But addressing disparities will require com-
munity leaders and citizens to explore ways to
improve the lives of all residents. And we
acknowledge that our states educators will
need the assistance of legislators, the business
community, and citizens to effectively implement
the strategies recommended in the task force
report.
We know that families want the best for
their children. The task forces work reinforced
that one of the most effective reforms for schools
is to focus on engaging parents. We are also
hopeful the task force report will stimulate a sus-
tained dialogue on how communities can rally
together to close the gap. Closing the achieve-
ment gap is a work of love. Only together can
we solve this problem. The children of our state
are counting on us.
Dr. Tony Evers was elected Wisconsin state
superintendent of public instruction in April
2009 and re-elected in 2013. He began his
career in 1976 as an educator in Tomah and
has served Wisconsin students, parents, and cit-
izens as an education leader at every level:
principal, school district administrator, CESA
administrator, and deputy state superintendent.
Dr. Demond Means, superintendent of the
Mequon-Thiensville School District, has nearly
two decades of administrative experience. His
background includes work as a social studies
teacher, coach, and adviser. He served as chair
of Promoting Excellence for All: The State
Superintendents Task Force on Wisconsins
Achievement Gap.
Commentary: We must close the achievement gap

With colder temperatures coming, you
might be thinking about making some additions
that will help your home and your pocketbook
get through the winter unscathed. Many people
automatically think of drafty places in the home
like doorsills or older windows. Its a great idea
to pay attention to these, but insulation actually
has a much greater effect. Rather than a quick
draft, poor insulation is like a slow sieve, leaking
energy at every surface of your home. Fall is the
perfect time to install more insulation in your
home.
The first step is to find out how much insula-
tion you actually have. Crawl up in to your attic
and look at the depth of the insulation there.
That can offer you a clue about the quality of
the rest of the insulation in your home. There are
also numerous organizations that will come out
and do a home energy audit for you. Having an
energy audit is a good idea for a number of
reasons, including the fact that it will reveal the
quality of insulation in hard-to-check places like
inside your walls.
These days, youve got several options for
home insulation. Most people think of giant rolls
of pink, and these rolls or batts are still readily
available. Made of fiberglass or rock wool,
they are easy to install and relatively cheap.
They are also cut to standard widths to fit
between wall studs or floor joists in the ceiling.
You might also look into professional installation
of loose-fill, rigid foam or foam-in-place insula-
tion. Loose-fill insulation can be blown into
place, making it useful for odd-shaped places
like roofs or ducting where it can be difficult to
install other kinds of insulation. Rigid foam can
be applied to exterior walls and has a higher R-
rating based on thickness.
Each type of insulation is given an R-rating,
essentially a measure of how much resistance to
heat flow the product has. As you do your
research, youll quickly learn the R-values of dif-
ferent types of insulation. Remember that these
are based on depth as well, and the resistance
to heat will change based on how much mate-
rial you put into your house.
Each region of the country has different rec-
ommendations for the amount of insulation you
should have, so check with your contractor
before proceeding to maximize your invest-
ment. Insulation is one of the most effective
ways you can reduce your energy expenditures,
offering a much faster return on your investment
than other options. In addition to keeping your
home warm in the winter, insulation can keep
the heat out in the summer, doubling your
investment. Once youve completed your reno-
vation, you can cozy up for the winter under the
new blanket for your house.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Other than skin cancer, breast cancer is the most com-
mon cancer among American women. Getting mammo-
grams regularly can lower the risk of dying from breast can-
cer. If you are 50 to 74 years old, be sure to have a screen-
ing mammogram every two years. If you are 40 to 49 years
old, talk to your doctor about when to start and how often
to get a screening mammogram.
What Are the Symptoms?
There are different symptoms of breast cancer, and
some people have no symptoms at all. Symptoms can
include any change in the size or the shape of the breast,
pain in any area of the breast, nipple discharge other than
breast milk (including blood), and a new lump in the breast
or underarm. If you have any signs that worry you, be sure
to see your doctor right away.
How Can I Lower My Risk?
The main factors that influence your risk for breast can-
cer include being a woman, being older (most breast can-
cers are found in women who are 50 years old or older), and
having changes in your breast cancer genes (BRCA1 and
BRCA2). Most women who get breast cancer have no
known risk factors and no history of the disease in their
families. There are things you can do to can help lower your
breast cancer risk. The Know:BRCA tool (on the Centers
for Disease Control web site) can help you assess your risk
of having changes in your BRCA genes.
Although breast cancer screening cannot prevent breast
cancer, it can help find breast cancer early, when it is easi-
er to treat. Talk to your doctor about which breast cancer
screening tests are right for you, and when you should have
them.
Tips for Women with Physical Disabilities
If you are a woman living with a disability, you may
face challenges that make it hard to get a mammogram.
When scheduling your mammogram, ask the staff how to
prepare if you use a wheelchair or a scooter, and ask if the
machine can be adjusted so you can remain seated. Also,
tell the staff if you need help to sit upright, move your arms,
transfer from your chair or scooter, or get undressed and
dressed. Ask how long the appointment is and if you can
have more time if you need it. If you have any disability-
related concerns, discuss them with your doctor.
