Patient Monitoring Using Zigbee
Abstract
Very often there are a lot of people who have to be monitored are left alone. These people include
elderly ones and patients suffering from chronic ailments. This can be in a hospital or in an old age
home or even at homes. In a busy world keeping track of them is very difficult unless we have a
device that can keep track of the patients and inform the persons if there are any abnormal
parameter changes. Further the device has to be so user friendly and it should be attachable to the
patients without any wired connections and it should go with them wherever they move.
The project aims at designing such device with the help of the Zigbee. The patient is fitted with few
biomedical sensors that can keep track of their body conditions. This includes temperature,
heartbeat. These sensors are attached to a microcontroller that can monitor the values from the
sensor. It keeps track of the patient from the sensor signals. This information is transmitted via
Zigbee and hence wireless. So the people can move around everywhere they like.
This information is received on a centralized console where multiple wireless devices communicate
with each other. This centralized console also houses a microcontroller along with a Zigbee module.
The microcontroller communicates with the module and takes the responsibility. In case of an
emergency situation arising, the microcontroller immediately sends Signal to alarm and also
monitoring section to a concerned person informing him about the situation.
Because using Zigbee technology the project adds mobility to the people and hence can be used at
many places with full advantage. This gives the way to easily locate the concerned person. Hence
speedy action can be taken. Thus the project gives an easy way to access patients situation from
anywhere in the hospital.

Existing System
1. A patient has to be monitored by a person then and there.
2. Difficult to provide a separate person to each.
3. No automation.

Proposed System
1. At the monitoring station Zigbee receiver gets the parameters and monitored.
2. In case of an emergency situation, doctors can able to notice immediately.
