MODULE SIX
ABRAHAM AND LOT

Answer the following questions (based on the reading), save it and then submit it to the
professor.

1. How does Genesis 18 contrast with Genesis 19 regarding Gods character and
activities? (Davis pg 195-196).They show God in two different ways Genesis 18
contrasts with chapter 19, the former depicting Abrahams encounter with the
Lord; and the other side of God in chapter 19 because of Gods judgment and
violent destruction of Sodom.
2. Describe the typical hospitality displayed in Genesis 18 during this time. This
type of guest did not seem to be out of the ordanairy for Abraham, he seemed
extremely comfortable, he provided a respectful greeting, washed there feet, had a
meal prepared Genesis 18 contrasts with chapter 19, the former depicting
Abrahams tender, sensitive fellowship with his guest; the latter, Gods awesome
judgment and violent destruction of Sodom. (Davis pg 197)
3. Describe the kind of laughter of Sarah (Davis pg 198) Sarah laughed was of
unbelief she did believe that suggesting that Abraham either had not told her of
the promise, or failed to convince her that it could be kept.
4. How does the Lord evaluate Abraham? (Davis pg 198) The Lords confidence in
Abraham is further delineated in verse 19. What a tribute it is to be evaluated by
the Lord Himself as faithful, obedient, and consistent.
5. When is intercessory prayer effective?(Davis pg 198) It is effective when we can
understand the significance and impact of judgement that is pronounced by God .
6. What was the sin of Sodom that caused Gods judgment?(Davis pg 201) The sin
that provoked Gods judgement agains Sodom was sexual immorality.
7. How did God destroy Sodom(.(Davis pg 203) Sodom was destroyed by God using
fire and brimstone,
8. Where has Sodom been located?(Davis pg 203) . The location of Sodom and
Gomorrah is equally uncertain even though it has been studied in detail. Albright
locates Sodom on the lowest course of the Seil en-Numeira, which flows into the
Dead Sea today approximately the center of the east side of the embayment.
9. How is this story often depicted in the New Testament? In the book of Jude 1:7
7
Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving
themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an
example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
10. How is Lot described? Lot is quite immature and lacks discipline , Lots affection
for the things of this world is all too typical of our generations materialism.
(Davis pg 202)
11. Who are the Moabites and Ammonites? Through incestuous intercourse with their
own father they raise up descendants for the family which is threatened with
extinction. The tribes born of them are the tribal ancestors of the later Ammonites
and Moabites. (Davis pg 207)

12. Read Deuteronomy 2:9-21. How does God bless Lot? God gave the sons of lot
land
13. Discuss the strategic location of Gerar. It was in a strategic location becausethe
territory of Gerar was strategically located between settled land to the east and
grazing land to the west, so it is understandable that the Philistines gained control
of it rather early. (Davis 211)
14. T/FAbimelech is the real name of the king of Gerar. Explain your answer. I
dont think its clear because Abimelech was a dynastic title: the king of Gerar in
Isaacs time is called Abimelech (26:8), as is King Achish of Gath in Davids day
(pg 211).
15. How does this encounter (Gen 20) put the promise in jeopardy again? (Consider
the events in Gen 21.) By special revelation the king found out that Abraham lied
to him about Sarahs identity it was common during that time for the king to take
unmarried woman. Because of the special revelation the King did not sleep with
Sarah.
16. How is the word prophet used of Abraham in Gen 20? In the context Abraham
is identified as a prophet to emphasize the official nature of his intercessory
prayer, not his ability to foretell events. (Davis pg 212)
17. How does Ishmael respond to the birth of Isaac? He was sadden, I would imagine
in that time he thought he would be the sole heir. However God had a different
plan. Ishmael was not the child of promise, he became angry and upset(Davis pg
213)
18. What does Abrahams covenant with Abimelech tell us about Abraham? I think
Abraham knew what he did was wrong, was greatful that God kept him from
becoming intimate with Sarah and it showed that he had integrity (Davis pg 214)
19. How is the promise in jeopardy again in Genesis 22? God asked Abraham to do
the ridiculous in taking his son the promise to be sacrificed, in Abrahams
response he stated when we get back! If Abraham did not have faith the promised
would have been compromised.
20. List the three ways of trying to explain why God told Abraham to do what he did
(Gen 22).1. Faith test 2. Obedience test 3. human sacrifice was a common custom
in Abrahams day (Davis pg 217)
21. Which approach (from #20) seems to be the best explanation? I believe God
meant what he said he intentionally commanded an actual human sacrifice and
Abraham intended to obey him fully. (Davis pg 217)
22. What does Hebrews 11:17-19 tell us about Abrahams beliefs? He was the Father
of faith- he was obedient and faithful.
23. What other events happened on Mt Moriah? Solomons temple was built there
24. Why was Ephron reluctant to sell Abraham just the cave? Abraham was a stranger
to the Hittite land and it was against there law.(Davis 222)
25. How does this encounter affect the authority of Scripture? First, they might
indicate that the Hittites dwelling in the southern hill country of Palestine were
indeed generically related to those in ancient Anatolia. Second, they seem to
preclude a late date for the composition of Genesis. We have thus found that
knowledge of intricate subtilties of Hittite laws and customs, correctly
corresponding to the time of Abraham and fitting in the Hittite features of the

Biblical account. With the final destruction of the Hittite capital of Hattusas about
1200 B.C.E., these laws must have fallen into utter oblivion. This study again
confirms the authenticity of the background material of the Old Testament,
which makes it such an invaluable source for the study of all aspects of social,
economic, and legal aspects of the periods of history it depicts. (Davis pg 222)
26. Name all the ones buried in this cave. The cave of Machpelah (v. 9) became the
burial place of, in addition to Sarah, Abraham, Isaac, Rebekah, Leah, and Jacob
(Davispg 223)
27. What does Abrahams act of burying Sarah in the land indicate about Abraham?
He was a man of ultimate faith the very fact that Abraham buried Sarah in the
land of Canaan is proof of his unwavering faith. Knowing that his descendants
would have to endure four hundred years of bitter bondage in a foreign country
(15:13), he looked beyond that to the ultimate fulfillment of Gods promise.
