Course Description:
Signal analysis and design. Fourier series and transforms. Time-sampling, convolution, and l-
tering; spectral density. Analog and digital modulation: carrier-amplitude, carrier-frequency, and
pulse-amplitude; analysis and design.
1. Review: signals, Fourier transform, and Fourier series (Ch.2.1-2.9, 3.1-3.3)
2. System transform and ltering (Ch.3.4-3.7)
3. Amplitude modulation and demodulation (Ch.4.1-4.8)
4. Angle modulation and demodulation (Ch.5.1-5.5)
5. Sampling and PCM (Ch.6.1-6.6)
6. Pulse amplitude modulation (Ch.7.1-7.3)
Homework:
2 Assigned every Wednesday, due by 6:30pm the following Wednesday in the HW box located
in 2131 Kemper Hall.
2 Work individually. No late homework will be accepted.
2 Each set is weighted equally.
2 Each problem in a homework set is worth 5 points, with points allocated as follows:
Correct: 4
Minor error: 3
Major error: 2
Attempted: 1
Neatness: +1

Computer Assignment: Computer assignment will involve the use of MATLAB/SIMULINK.
You must submit plots with the listings of your MATLAB/SIMULINK program/diagram. ECE
computer labs may be accessed.
2 4-5 sets; due by 6:30pm on Fridays in the HW box located in 2131 Kemper Hall.
2 Work individually. No late report will be accepted.
2 Each set is weighted equally.
2 Your report should include
goals of the experiment;
basic analytical derivations;
basic steps followed;
results observed;
explanation of your results;
MATLAB code.
Exams:
2 One mid-term exam and one nal exam with the following schedule:
Midterm: Wednesday, November 6, in class.
Final: Friday, December 13, 3:30-5:30
2 All exams are closed-book. You are allowed to bring one and two double-sided 8.5 11 cheat
sheets for Midterm and nal exam, respectively. Calculators are allowed.
2 Requests for make-up exams will only by approved in cases where strong written justication
is provided. Acceptable justication includes illness (conrmed in writing by a physician) and
personal problems (conrmed by personnel at the Counselling Center). Except for sudden
severe illness, such request must be presented to the instructor in advance..
2 All grades are nal and non-negotiable except for grading errors. In order to correct a grading
error, the original examination paper must be returned to the instructor within a week with
a brief note explaining the grading error and a signed statement attesting that the test paper
has not been altered in any way.

Homework: 15%
Computer Assignment: 15%
Midterm: 30%
Final: 40%
