WASTEWATER BY CHITOSAN AND CHITOSAN SULFATE PRODUCED BY
DEACETYLATION OF ACHATINA SHELL (Achatina fullica). Thesis. Department of

It is research about the desorption of Procion Red MX 8B dye that has been done and the
objective of this research is to knows the efectivitas chitosan after change to chitosan sulfate for
the textile dye waste absorption, to find out the optimum condition of the absorbent toward the
derivation of textile dye content in the solution, and to find out the isotherm type and
characteristic absorption which appropriate for the textile dye absorption.
Isolation of chitin from achatina shell was done by deproteination and demineralization.
Chitosan produced by deacetylation of achatina shell has been change to chitosan sulphate by
impregnation of sulphate ion from ammonium sulphate 0.1 M. Identification of functional group
for achatina shell, chitin, chitosan and chitosan sulphate was done by Fourier Transformer
Infrared (FTIR). Adsorption process was done by Batch method with variation of pH, contact
time and variation of. The analysis of adsorption of Procion Red MX 8B is by Ultraviolet-Visible
Spectroscopy. The types of the adsorption isotherm were analyzed by Langmuir and Freundlich
isotherm. Desorption test was use aquadest.
The result showed that rendemen chitin, chitosan and chitosan sulfate were 18,262 %,
9,597 % dan 8,657 %. The optimum condition of Procion Red MX 8B dye adsorption by chitosan
was pH of 2, contact time of 15 minutes, concentration of 35 ppm whereas chitosan sulphate was
pH of 2, contact time of 15 minutes, concentration of 40 ppm. The dominant adsorption isotherm
for Procion Red MX 8B dye adsorption by chitosan and chitosan sulphate was Langmuir
isotherm. Conversion of chitosan to chitosan sulphate has been able to rise of the adsorption
capacity. The yield adsorption of chitosan sulphate to chitosan in Procion Red MX 8B was up
17.31 % and 16.29 % in Procion Red MX 8B dye wastewater. The adsorption process result the
strong interaction between Procion Red MX 8B with adsorbent, so the dyes almost cant be
desorp.
