Poverty, illiteracy, Child labour, lack of education facility in rural and tribal areas are some of the reasons

To provide holistic value based education to the underprivileged children living in and around the village
named Vadakkur, Thanjavur District, Tamilnadu State, India

Part II: Details about your educational project/s
7. List the school/s run by your group, and their locations. If you are requesting funds for only a few of
several schools, please specify which one/s.
We are running over 400 schools in remote and economically backward areas in 20 States of India. More
than 40,000 students are being provided with free education.
We are currently soliciting funds for building and running a school at Vadakkur village of Thanjavur
District in Tamilnadu, India

School till Higher Secondary Classes. The students after completing Std 12 will be eligible for pursuing
University education.

10. Please tell us about your teaching techniques (conventional vs. alternative).

The school will follow the curriculum approved by the State Board of Tamilnadu. In addition to this the
students will also receive Value education for the purpose of Inculcating values like friendliness, sharing &
caring attitude with a strong emphasis on healthy living, hygiene and cleanliness given the fact that the
parents of most children are illiterate and poor.

11. What is the literacy rate in the local community?

The literacy rate in the local community is estimated to be 68% (approx)

12. Describe the socio-economic background of the children and their parents (e.g. education, occupational).
If any of your students are employed, please tell us about that as well.
Children are from economically backward sections of the society. Their parents are landless laborers/
farmers/ local artisans. The proposed school will provide free education to students from 18 nearby
villages. These villages don't have access to a school close by (for a radius of around 10 km), as a result of
which many children don't go to school or have to travel long distances and hence drop out of school
early.

13. In addition to education, does your group provided any other services to the children in your school (e.g.
food, health care, clothing, etc)?

We plan to provide students with mid-day meal everyday, uniforms, books & stationery free of cost in
order to motivate them to attend school everyday

The building for the school at Thanjavur is currently under construction. The proposed number of
students to be admitted in the school are 200 in year 1. The children will be 4 to 12 years of age. The plan
is to scale it up and have around 400 students over the next few years.

They will also be provided with specific training to help inculcate human values in children. The number of
staff will increase proportionate to the increase in number of students.

Students from villages which are situated within 18km radius of Vadakkur village of Thanjavur will attend
our school

19. How many children have gone through your program in the past five years and what are they doing
currently? Please tell us about their future education and employment possibilities.

The building for the school is under construction. Once the children pass out of of the school thay can
choose to continue their University education (e.g. study medicine or engineering or other graduation
courses) or to apply for employment (e.g self employment, becoming a teacher etc).

20. Do you help your students with their future education efforts after they have passed out of your school?

Yes, we propose to help our students in their future education efforts after they have passed out of our
school.

21. Are there any other schools (Kindergarten/Balwadi, Elementary school, High School) in the area? If so,
please list the schools and the range of classes each of them offers.

No, there are no government schools for a radius of around 18km.

22. Is your program different from that provided at these schools? Please explain.

Yes. We provide Value based education in a stress free environment.

23. Why are the children in your school/s not attending government /other schools in the local area?

These children are not attending school due to the distance and affordability

24. Do you try to involve the parents of the children in the running of the school (e.g. in seeing the syllabus
etc)? please specify.

We will be involving the parents by making them a member of the Parent teacher committee. They will be
helping in the academic, cultural and co-curricular activities of the school.

25. What are your expansion plans for the future (e.g. adding more classes of schools)?

The school will be constructed in two phases and gradually expand thereafter to include additional classes
as the number of children increase

26. Do you have suggestions in how Asha can be a positive influence in changing the education scenario in
India?

The school will impart value based education to the students who hail from backward classes of the
society. This will help the students improve both economically as well as socially, thereby developing
them into honest and responsible adults. Asha can influence the education scenario in India by funding
such schools. Thus helping to improve the social fabric of these villages in India.

Land of 3.5 acres has been donated by Professor Swaminathan. The group has contributed SGD 100,000
towards construction of the school building. A group of enthusiastic NRI volunteers have been
contributing as well collecting funds from family and friends towards the balance of funds required for
construction of school building. The total estimated cost of the school construction is around USD 300000.
