File locking on Windows & MCD errors - Dabacon 37, 38 or 406 errors
ToolTips with accelerated OpenGL graphics
Running PDMS on Windows XP SP2
Note 1 - File locking on Windows & MCD errors - Dabacon 37, 38 or 406 errors
Many customers have had great success, on a large number of projects, with PDMS 11.2, 11.3 Windows NT and
Windows 2000 for many years. However, during this time there have been occasional reports of customers
encountering 'MCD errors'. An MCD error is an unexpected error for which Windows does not provide an adequate
description: in most cases these are unexpected file-handling problems For most customers these errors (if they
see them at all) are infrequent and cause little more than a minor inconvenience. They can be due to network
failures or similar problems, so it has been extremely difficult to pinpoint a cause. However, we have been
investigating them for some time and have worked closely with Microsoft to resolve them. We have now identified
and rectified some particular problems with file locking. These problems are all believed to be resolved in
Windows XP service pack 2 so if your client Windows installation is up-to-date, you need read no
further! However, you should refer to separate notes on the configuration of XP SP 2, particularly for
Global.
Faults have been identified in the handling of certain type of file locks on Windows. These faults are believed to be
one of the major causes of "MCD" errors in PDMS. The problems can occur if access conflicts occur when using
queued file locking, which is used for the PDMS system database and for "multi-write" databases. These conflicts
are more likely when Global 1.1 (PDMS 11.2) is in use, particularly with a slow connection, as the files are kept
open for longer than later versions of Global (1.2 or 2.1). One customer has improved matters considerably by
using an intermediate satellite, which then updates the main server at LAN speeds.
The first fault occurs on all versions of Windows, and causes client machines to give up queuing for a file, thus
leading to an 'MCD' error in PDMS. Typically this is: MCD:64 The specified network name is not available.
The second fault does not occur on Windows NT 4, but can cause a process accessing such a file to 'hang' on
Windows 2000. The third fault occurs on Windows 2000 and XP: the status on NT 4 is not known.
If you are not running the latest update for Windows XP (service pack 2) or 2000 (update rollup 1 for
service pack 4), then you will need to implement some hotfixes - these should provide a complete
solution.
The solution varies depending on which version of Windows is in use: this is our current understanding of what is
available.

Windows 2000: There is a hotfix for each fault in the form of a simple upgrade that has to be applied to every
client. To obtain the hotfixes:
Q810038 can be downloaded from - web reference
Q320310 is included in Service pack 3 - web reference
Q320310 and Q823272 (as stand-alone fixes) can be obtained only by special arrangement with Microsoft
Support - contact your local Support Professional.
Q823272 is documented here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;823272 and is now
included in the Update Rollup 1 for Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 that is dated June 28, 2005 - see
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;900345
Windows XP (prior to service pack 2): There is a hotfix that fixes the first two faults that has to be applied to
every client. Users who wish to apply the hotfix will need to request it from Microsoft: reference number Q320310.
This fix is also required for Windows XP Service Pack 1 although the web-site suggests otherwise. A further hotfix
for the third fault is also available from Microsoft: reference Q823272. [Note: AVEVA has announced formal
support of Windows XP for PDMS 11.4.sp1. We did not encounter any issues (other than those described in these
notes) in our preliminary tests on earlier releases.]
Q320310 (as a stand-alone fix) and Q823272 can only be obtained by special arrangement with Microsoft
Support - contact your local Support Professional.
None of these hotfixes is available from AVEVA.
Use of SGI server with Windows clients: In a mixed (heterogeneous) environment, the introduction of these
Microsoft fixes highlights problems using Samba (2.0.5a or 2.2.2 were checked). In some circumstances, the
PDMS clients may hang, from which the only escape is to quit the session. We believe that these are resolved in
Samba 2.2.8a, which is available from the Samba web-server or the SGI freeware site. Further details of Samba
releases can be found on http://www.samba.org - and are also available on the SGI freeware site
http://freeware.sgi.com. The new Samba options (share modes, oplocks, level2 oplocks) should be left at the
default value of 'yes'.
Please note that AVEVA does not expect to investigate the new Samba 3.0 or to support the use of
Samba with PDMS releases after 11.6.
Summary: We now have a solution for PDMS users running on Windows with Windows servers and have had good
reports from a few user sites, with further problems being identified at other sites. We believe that these are
resolved by the third hotfix Q823272. We have tested the hotfixes from Microsoft and also the service packs for
Windows 2000 and XP.
No change is required in any version of PDMS, so these solutions will work equally well for PDMS 11.2, 11.3, 11.4,
11.5 and 11.6.
Special considerations apply to Global and to PDMS workstations working a Global projects please see separate
note Running Global on Windows XP SP2.
Older versions of PDMS should also work correctly, though these have not been rigorously tested.
Note 2 - ToolTips with accelerated OpenGL graphics
With some graphics hardware, PDMS 11.6 can display incorrect ToolTips i.e. when you move your mouse pointer
over toolbar buttons to view the ToolTips for each button, you may see the text from the previous ToolTip in a new
ToolTip box. When this occurs, ToolTips in other applications can also go wrong.
This is due to a fault with Windows XP versions earlier than service pack 2. For full details please see web
reference.
Note 3 - Running PDMS on Windows XP SP2
Windows XP Service Pack 2 has been successfully tested with PDMS 11.6 and will be supported with other PDMS
versions in line with their respective support status ratings. We anticipate that most customer installations will
disable Microsofts Internet Connection Firewall (ICF), which is now turned on by default. If this is not the case, it
should be configured to enable access to the database server and the licence server.
