USDA Quantifies Impact of
Current Service Disruptions on
Rail Shipping Costs
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has found that
current rail service disruptions have had the most severe impact
on the overall costs of shipping grain by rail of any event
measured in the past dozen years, including the disruption
created in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in
2005. Click HERE for a story prepared by the National Grain

Congressional Committee Seeks
Answers from EPA on Harmful Algae
Last week, House Energy & Commerce Committee Chairman
Fred Upton (R-MI), Subcommittee Chairman John Shimkus (R-
IL), and Rep. Bob Latta (R-OH) sent a letter to EPA
Administrator McCarthy regarding the algae bloom threat to
drinking water in the Great Lakes. The committee leaders
write, "A recent water emergency in Toledo, Ohio left 500,000
people, including families, hospitals, and businesses, unable to
utilize drinking water provided by the public water system
without risking negative health effects. We are deeply
concerned by any threat to the water supply, and we appreciate
the time and information your agency has devoted as we seek
answers. ..."

The letter includes a series of questions for EPA about the threat
of Microcystin and the agency's plans to address it, including
plans to release a health advisory on Microcystin-LR sometime
next spring. Click HERE to read the full letter to the
EPA. Industry leadership from the Ag Retailers Association and
the Ohio Agribusiness Association have provided talking points
explaining the pro-active steps being taken by the agricultural
industry in the Lake Erie Basin.

$246 billion. That surpasses the previous record, set in 2012,
by $8 billion, a 4 percent gain. U.S. co-ops also enjoyed robust
job growth over the previous year. This third consecutive year
of record sales by ag cooperatives reflects increased sales in
the overall farm economy in 2013. The number of full-time
employees working for ag co-ops also climbed by almost 7,000
in 2013, to 136,000, up 5 percent from 2012.

Secretary Vilsack made the announcement to mark the start of
National Cooperative Month in October. Click HERE to read the

Farmland Documentary Now Available
for On-line Viewing
Academy Award-winning filmmaker James Moll's
documentary, Farmland, is now available to stream on the
free, ad-supported Hulu and Hulu Plus subscription
service. Farmland will be available exclusively on the platform
for four weeks - providing viewers with the opportunity to
stream Farmland from their connected TVs, Blu-ray players,
gaming consoles, laptops, tablets and mobile devices.

During its theatrical debut this year, Farmland was shown in
more than 170 theaters across the country. It will now be
available digitally for the first time - you can watch it in its
entirety on Hulu at http://www.hulu.com/farmland.

Many Americans have never stepped foot on a farm or ranch or
even talked to the people who grow and raise the food we eat,
yet are increasingly passionate about understanding where
their food comes from. Farmland takes the viewer inside the
world of farming for a first-hand glimpse into the lives of six
young farmers and ranchers in their twenties. Through the
personal stories of these farmers and ranchers, viewers learn
about their high-risk/high-reward jobs and passion for a way of
life that has been passed down from generation to generation,
yet continues to evolve.
