Hutchison Campaign Running on False Facts
Hutchison campaign continues making false statements about education funding, ACA costs, national surrogates
Las Vegas, NV Its no wonder State Senator Mark Hutchison has been so reluctant to debate Assemblywoman
Lucy Flores in his 2014 campaign for Lieutenant Governor he just cant seem to get his facts right. Between his
claims of being a fighter for education and adding $500 million to the education budget and his statements
about the ACA, not to mention his fundraising appeals claiming that the likes of Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi are
raising money for Assemblywoman Flores, we are not sure where Senator Hutchison is getting his information but
its certainly not from any valid source.
Lets look first at education. Just last week political reporter Jon Ralston gave Sen. Hutchisons first TV ad a C-,
claiming that he found scant evidence that Hutchison had legitimately fought for education funding during his
first and only legislative session. Furthermore, claims that he joined forces with Governor Sandoval to expand the
education budget by $500 million are downright false. $1 billion had already been stripped from the education
budget; the $500 million added barely covers rollup costs associated with expanding numbers of enrolled pupils.
Sen. Hutchisons position as a fighter for education is nothing but misleading.
More recently, a Reno Gazette-Journal fact check column written by Mark Robison debunked Sen. Hutchisons
claim in the Nevada NewsMakers debate that the Affordable Care Act has raised health care costs in Nevada, giving
him a truth score of 3 out of 10. Sen. Hutchison has never been a fan of the Affordable Care Act, in spite of the fact
that it has improved access to affordable and quality healthcare to tens of thousands of everyday Nevadans.
Students can now stay on their parents insurance until age 26. Insurance companies can no longer charge women
more for the same level of coverage, or deny access to contraception and preventative cancer screenings.
Insurance companies can no longer charge seniors more for prescriptions, or deny healthcare to people with pre-
existing conditions. The benefits for everyday Nevadans have been huge and yet Sen. Hutchison led the charge
against it, without having any suggestions for what to do instead. His claims that the ACA is driving up healthcare
costs are in line with Republican dogma, but not in line with reality: the Reno-Gazette Journal article state that,
Frankly, Fact Checker thinks it's too soon to come to a strong opinion about the Affordable Care Act's effects on
health care costs. Its main provisions haven't even been in effect a full year.
Lucy Flores is the Assemblywoman for District 28. She is running for Lieutenant Governor to bring a voice to our
state government that is too often missing. As the daughter of immigrants, she grew up in a challenging community
in North Las Vegas. Through her own hard work and the investment of people who believed in her, she earned a
GED, and eventually a law degree from the UNLV Boyd School of Law. Now she represents the community she
grew up in, and knows firsthand the difference making an investment in people can make. Ensuring that every
Nevadan has the opportunity to succeed is what continues to inspire her public service.
