Course Objective: The objective of this course is to introduce the student to switching and trunking as applied
within the telecommunications infrastructure of North America.
Text: Intro. to Telecommunications, 2nd Edition, Marion Cole, Prentice Hall, 2002, ISBN 0-13-060890-4.
Course Content: The objective of this course is to introduce the student to switching and transmission as
applied within the telecommunications infrastructure of North America. The material to be discussed during
this course will include the background and terminology of telecommunications in the U.S., digital transmission
and multiplexing, digital switching, network synchronization, control and management, fiber optic transmission
systems, SONET and Packet Switching Technologies.
Class Schedule: A detailed schedule with assignments is provided on page 2.
Examinations: There will be three exams during the course. The exams will be closed book, but will be
limited to material covered during the immediate unit.
Homework: Homework is due as assigned. Students may discuss problems together, but the assignments that
are turned in for grading must be the student's own work. Scholastic integrity will be enforced.
Prerequisite: The co-requisite for EE 4367 501 is Communication Systems, EE 4350. You must be currently
enrolled in, or have already taken, EE4350, to participate in this class.
Grading: The grade each student earns from this class will be based on the following scale:
Test 1 30%
Test 2 30%
Test 3 30%
Homework 10%
Total: 100%
[ A bonus of maximum 5% may be awarded for attendance and participation ]
Semester Grades will be assigned based on the following scale:
A ----------90.0 - 100
B+-------- 87.0 - 89.9
B --------- 80.0 - 86.9
C+-------- 77.0 - 79.9
C --------- 70.0 - 76.9
D+ ------- 67.0 - 69.9
D --------- 60.0 - 66.9
F --------- Below 60.0
