Wi-Fi Mesh Networks for Sea Ports

Sea Ports: Huge Opportunities in a Challenging Networking Environment
Global sea ports, like other industries, need to innovate to stay competitive. Greater
operational efficiency translates into directly into financial strength and viability. The
implementation of advanced applications remote cargo monitoring, video
surveillance, cargo tracking through RFID tags, and Internet access for cruise ship
passengers for ship-to-shore, on-ship and on-shore transactions requires a reliable
and robust network infrastructure. Increasingly, wireless broadband solutions are
providing the needed bandwidth to help achieve network objectives in one of the most
difficult RF environments. Sea Ports are characterized by complex operations that can
be spread over a huge service area, involving the movement of both large amounts of
cargo and increasing numbers of passengers.

Sea Ports Tough on Network Deployments
Port operations pose significant challenges for RF infrastructures. Common issues to
navigate include signal interference and high noise floors, multi-path conditions from
constantly changing container stack configuration and interoperability challenges from
existing communications systems and devices.
Signal propagation is further complicated by the combination of quay cranes, containers
and other machinery, which can lead to varying RF canyons.
GO Nets patented high-performance wireless xRF technology can increase the
security, improve the operations and business continuity capabilities as well as enable
interoperable communications at these major commercial cross points.

Carrier-Grade Wireless Networking Delivers Security and Operational Efficiencies
for Sea Ports

While video surveillance deployments tend to focus on the port and dockside areas, GO
Net nodes extend broadband voice, video and data networking services in ship-to-shore
applications and on the ships themselves. In the ship-to-shore operations for underway
vessels entering and leaving the harbor, and docked at port, GO Nets wireless xRF
TM

mesh technology replaces the cable infrastructure widely used.
This provides the ships with uninterrupted high bandwidth service, even as they
transition from underway communications to pier side, reducing both the recurring
maintenance costs and the service disruptions associated with cable-based connections.
In addition to fix wireless access, GO Net provides connectivity from moving vehicles or
tow boats through a Vehicular Unit for both voice and data access as well as video
transmission, which can be forwarded to the harbor control room.
Port-wide, dockside, ship-to-shore broadband wireless networking enables all port
personnel, including port security officials, to work more productively, and improves the
security and efficiency of port operations overall. Port personnel are able to access,

receive, transmit and share classified information over a secure wireless architecture
that is less expensive, less disruptive and more robust than alternative solutions.
In some ports, additional savings can be achieved through the reduction of cellular
charges.
GO Nets ability to reliably support Quality of Service (QoS) parameters and
classification and prioritization of traffic by bandwidth and application:
Traffic prioritization by application ensures high-quality low latency and jitter-free
voice and video transmission.
Traffic prioritization by bandwidth enables secure, uninterrupted network
availability for port personnel around the clock.
As an example, even while cruise ship passengers are enjoying high-speed, public
internet access, the same wireless mesh architecture is delivering critical voice, data and
video communications to port security and other personnel on a separate and secure
network.

Advantages of xRF
TM
Adaptive Beamforming Smart Antenna Technology in Sea
Port Deployments

Seaport environments are characterized by a multitude of metal elements (fencing,
towers, cars, containers and levers). These elements reflect the radio signals causing
significant interferences which deteriorate the RF signal and reduce the range and
throughput of the radio system. Designed to solve these interference, range and
capacity issues that plague outdoor Wi-Fi deployments in the unlicensed spectrum, GO
Nets xRF
TM
adaptive beamforming is a revolutionary technology designed to bring
carrier-class performance to Wi-Fi networking environments. A patented, purpose-built
solution, xRF
TM
technology combines a unique smart antenna array with powerful Digital
Signal Processing (DSP).
The advantages of beamforming are particularly notable when transmitting over
refractive or reflective surfaces, such as water or building walls respectively and hence
especially suitable for sea port deployment.
When a client signal is detected, radiated power is amplified in the direction of the
intended receiver and the transmission pathway is narrowed to a directional dedicated
beam of 27 degrees. The results are a significant increase in signal strength and
reduced interferences, and increased broadcasting of up to 200%. By using adaptive
beamforming instead of an omnidirectional broadcast pattern, the number of access
points needed in network deployments can be reduced by up to 50%. This translates
into significant savings in both capital expenditures and on-going operational
expenditures.
