Installing An Existing NIM Image
This section describes how to perform a nework install. Note however, that there are
some AIX machine architectures that will not allow a NIM operation to be performed at
lower levels, i.e. wea2aix and wea2aix! can onl" be NIM#ed with an AIX Maintenance
$evel % ima&e and cannot be NIM#ed with Maintenance $evel ' or 2.
(ou can make a machine a NIM client b" usin& the appropriate smitt" panels described
below while lo&&ed onto the client itself. (ou can also make it a NIM client from the
NIM server, however, if "ou do so, "ou must )reset), )deallocate), and )allocate) the
associated resources on the machine *NIM server or NIM client+ "ou wish to invoke the
NIM download from,to.
Confirm NIM Status 'f Machine
'+ -etermine if "our machine is a NIM client. Telnet or lo&on to the machine "ou wish to
NIM and edit the )niminfo file) *i.e. )vi ,etc,niminfo)+. If the )niminfo) file does not
exist, skip the next step *2+, and &o to step %.
2+ -etermine if the value for the )export NIM.MA/T01.23/TNAM0) e4uals
)&vtaix56.ralei&h.ibm.com). If this is the case, proceed to (erforming Normal NIM
Image Installation) If this parameter e4uals an"thin& else, rename the file )niminfo) to
)niminfo.nimesis) *or somethin& reflectin& this will be a backup+.
%+ 7rom the AIX command prompt on the machine "ou wish to NIM, t"pe )smitt" nim).
6+ In the )Network Installation Mana&ement) panel, select )8onfi&ure Network
Installation Mana&ement 8lient 7ileset) and press )0nter).
9+ In the )Machine Name) field, enter the machine "ou are on that "ou wish to make a
NIM client *i.e. )wea2aix2)+.
+ In the ):rimar" Network Install Interface) field, press the 76 ke" to &et a list of
interfaces, move the cursor to the network interface "ou are usin& *i.e. select )en5),
)en'), )en2), etc+, press )0nter), *or press 7% to &et out of the list, and then enter the
value for the ethernet interface+.

Creating A NIM Image

Create The NIM Image
NoteF in the example field values below, the strin& )boxname) must be replaced with the

Changing NIM Initiation Direction
This section describes the process of chan&in& the direction of a NIM initiation. A NIM
can be invoked from the NIM Master or the NIM 8lient. The first section describes the
actions necessar" for Changing From NIM Ser#er Initiate NIM to Client Initiate,
and assumes a successful NIM has been performed that was initiated b" the NIM /erver.
The next section Changing From NIM Client Initiate NIM to Ser#er Initiate, and

Aing A New Machine for NIM
To add a machine, "ou must perform actions on the NIM server *i.e. )&vtaix56)+, as well
as the client machine itself. If an AIX machine has no operatin& s"stem, or has an
incompatible operatin& s"stem *or perhaps other conditions+, it mi&ht be necessar" to
boot the machine in )sin&le user) mode and manuall" confi&ure the machine for NIM.

The above example specifies a boot order of 8- first *)cd5)+, then the network *includin&
