This document discusses using a systems dynamics approach to model energy systems in rural Alaskan communities. It summarizes that renewable and alternative energy sources can best meet rural communities' growing energy needs. It presents a basic rural community energy model and discusses challenges around inefficiencies, high delivery costs, demand uncertainty and variability, waste and losses in the current system. The goal is to meet energy needs at minimum cost by exploring new energy sources and adaptive systems.

The citys power cost exceeds $0.32 kWh. Development of power from the Akutan geothermal project would eliminate the dependence on diesel fuel, reduce carbon emissions and promote economic and cultural sustainability of Akutan and the region.
